After a month of cold war with Ye Zheng, he suddenly posted on social media, sharing a picture of a pair of sparkling couple's rings and announcing that he was preparing to get engaged.
The group chat exploded, with everyone tagging me and urging me to send red envelopes. Ye Zheng then added a newcomer to the group, whose name was quite adorable: "Little Fairy of Zheng." He directly tagged everyone and said, "Stop calling out; this is your real sister-in-law."
I stared at the message on the screen, nearly laughing in anger. The little fairy sweetly greeted everyone and finally tagged me, sending a "Sister, muah!" sticker, followed by a rather coy remark: "Sister, I'm still young; please take care of me in the future."
I felt disgusted and immediately left the group, turning off my phone. Ye Zheng's blatant slap in the face was not a first. In the past, I would always be the one to comfort him, but this time I was too lazy to guess his intentions and simply blocked him.
Today is my birthday, and I felt a bit down. I changed into a little black dress and took a taxi to a newly opened bar in the city center. After getting half-drunk, two men approached me to flirt. I squinted my eyes and refused them. However, they were persistent and wouldn't let go of my arm.
In a panic, I tried to get up and leave but couldn't break free. Turning my head, I spotted Ye Zheng's cousin, Li Yunfan, an expert surgeon at City Hospital, sitting in a corner not far away. He was wearing a black shirt and trousers, looking particularly handsome with his glasses on.
I quickly called out, "Brother!" Li Yunfan's friend glanced at me and exchanged knowing looks with him. Li Yunfan set down his drink and walked over, coldly addressing the two men: "This is my friend; please leave."
They awkwardly released their grip and walked away. "Where's Ye Zheng?" Li Yunfan frowned. "It's not good for girls to drink excessively."
I looked at him with tipsy eyes and said, "We broke up. Brother, can you take me home?"
"Xia Lanlan," he replied coolly, "I'm Ye Zheng's cousin."
"I know."
I took a slow step forward, my footing unsteady. Li Yunfan reached out and steadied me by the waist. "Stand firm."
"I can't stand well... Brother, I'm dizzy and can't hold myself up."
I tilted my head back and saw a hint of red on his earlobes.
It reminded me of last month when I went to the hospital for a breast examination and happened to get his appointment.
His ears turned slightly red during the check-up.
"Xia Lanlan, I asked your friend to come pick you up; you should sit down first."
He grabbed my arm, trying to pull me away.
But I wrapped my arms around his waist instead. "Brother, you told me to get a follow-up for the breast hyperplasia issue last time. I forgot to go because of something else. Can you help me check again tonight?"
He held my hand and pushed me away slightly once more, clearing his throat. "Has it hurt since you took the medicine?"
"It does, especially in the days leading up to my period; it swells and aches."
I frowned and placed my hand over my heart on the left side. "Doctor Li, do you think the medicine you prescribed last time wasn't effective?"
"Come back for a follow-up after I start work tomorrow."
"But it hurts a lot right now... Is there a quicker way to relieve the pain?"
"You're in pain but still want to drink?"
Li Yunfan frowned slightly, his brows knitting together in concern.
I bit my lip, looking at him with teary eyes. "Doctor Li, it's my birthday today, and Ye Zheng suddenly announced he’s with another girl..."
He looked down at me from above, a faint trace of pity in his eyes.
His car was spacious and comfortable; I sat in the backseat holding the small cake he bought for me, making a wish and blowing out the candles.
