To me, it might just be a fleeting whim. Instead of ending things awkwardly like we did when we met at noon, it would be better to wrap it up now, as if nothing ever happened.
As soon as I arrived at my rented apartment, Ye Zheng's call came in. After some thought, I decided to answer. It’s better to clarify things after a breakup.
"Where are you? My mom wants us to come home for dinner together," he said, his voice as casual as ever, as if nothing had happened yesterday. I felt a mix of amusement and heartbreak.
"Ye Zheng, I thought we broke up yesterday," I replied calmly, but he seemed a bit flustered.
"Xia Lanlan, you know I love to joke around. Yesterday was just a prank," he said impatiently. "I’m downstairs; hurry up."
"Did you not understand what I said? Ye Zheng, we broke up."
"Are you sure you want to break up?"
"Yes, I want to break up. I don’t want to play this game anymore."
"You’re upset because I let everyone call her ‘sister-in-law,’ right?"
"Tian Miaomiao is just my colleague and also my junior from elementary school; there’s nothing between us. Don’t be so petty."
"I’m not interested in knowing all that. Ye Zheng, let’s not contact each other anymore. That’s it."
With that, I hung up the phone. But Ye Zheng called out to me, his voice darkening.
"Xia Lanlan, are you burning bridges behind you?"
My heart sank. When I graduated from college, my parents had an accident; my father died on the spot, and my mother spent two months in the ICU.
Ye Zheng appeared at that moment. He helped me pay the enormous medical bills and compensation, and even took care of my parents' funeral arrangements. As a recently graduated orphan, I felt powerless to repay him and could only accept his advances. Now, he accused me of being ungrateful.
Thinking about the debt I still owed him, I couldn't help but smile bitterly. Yes, what right did I have to be ungrateful? Even though Ye Zheng had countless affairs and even had relationships with two of my colleagues, making me feel humiliated, I was still the one who had no right to say goodbye. This is what they call being indebted to someone.
“Xia Lanlan, you are my girlfriend. Those women outside can't compare to you. Don't be angry; just change your clothes and come downstairs. My parents are waiting at home,” he said. In his eyes, this was him lowering himself.
If I didn't comply, it would mean I was ungrateful. He loved to play around; his private life was messy, filled with flings. Although my background was ordinary, I had a good education and a clean upbringing, with a respectable job. Ye Zheng's parents looked down on me but even more so on those other women. Therefore, they neither interfered with nor approved of my relationship with Ye Zheng.
This was the first time they actively invited me to dinner at the Ye Family's home. As I changed my clothes and headed downstairs, a friend request suddenly popped up on WeChat.
“Xia Lanlan, it's me, Li Yunfan.”
Seeing the name Li Yunfan brought an indescribable pain to my heart, almost suffocating me. Leaning against the wall, I tightly clutched my clothing for a while before managing to hold back my tears and calm myself down. I knew I had been suppressing my feelings for too long. That was why I had let myself go just last night.
But this time, I resolutely rejected his friend request. He didn't send another request or call. In the adult world, this is a clear and blatant rejection.
Li Yunfan, such a proud son of heaven, is naturally very arrogant. He probably won't seek me out again.
Ye Zheng's eyes were filled with triumph when he saw me come downstairs. I got into the car, and we drove in silence.
Ye Zheng wanted to hold me, but I shook my head. "Damn," he cursed, "fine, I'll wait until the engagement to touch you."
When we arrived at the Ye Family home, his parents and sister were all there. His sister, Ye Meng, has been unwell; she underwent a kidney transplant over a year ago and hasn't recovered well. She rarely makes an appearance.
