"Xia Lanlan is here, come sit down," Mother Ye greeted me warmly.
During our casual conversation, she asked with concern, "Ye Zheng mentioned you had a health check last month. Is everything alright?"
"I'm fine, just a bit of breast hyperplasia, nothing else," I replied.
"That's good to hear." Mother Ye looked pleased. "Xia Lanlan, you and Ye Zheng have been together for almost a year now. You should pick a date to get engaged."
"Sure, I also want to settle down. How about next month?" Ye Zheng chimed in.
"Xia Lanlan has no parents; it would be good for her to marry soon and have someone to rely on." Mother Ye held my hand with a loving expression.
Yet, I couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off.
The Ye family was particularly warm-hearted. When they sent me home, Mother Ye even handed me a new LV bag.
"You don't need to worry about the engagement; we'll make it a grand affair."
"Xia Lanlan, just wait in peace," she added.
As I got into the car and left, I glanced out the window at the smiling faces of the Ye family elders and then at the pale-faced Ye Meng. A chill ran through me inexplicably.
Ye Zheng dropped me off at my apartment complex and then left. I heard him answer a phone call; it was probably that little fairy from yesterday. But I pretended not to hear and dragged my weary body forward.
When I reached downstairs, I saw Li Yunfan under the tree, holding a cigarette.
I paused for a moment, instinctively wanting to hide.
He flicked the cigarette out and called my name directly.
"Doctor Li," I could only stand still.
"Why didn't you wait for me to come back?" His voice was somewhat cold.
I felt a deep pang of bitterness in my heart, forcing myself to act nonchalant. "I got drunk last night, Doctor Li. Let's pretend nothing happened."
He looked at me, his gaze growing colder by the moment.
"Xia Lanlan, are you really that casual?"
I held back my tears and managed a smile. "Doctor Li, just consider it a lucky break; I came to you willingly."
His brow furrowed slightly, and he irritably pulled out a cigarette, lighting it up.
I watched him smoke, his expression stern. Yet when he looked at me, there was an unmistakable hint of tenderness.
I recalled how he had held me in a panic last night, his voice filled with guilt and concern.
"I'm sorry, little one. I didn't know it was your first time..."
I averted my gaze, suppressing the discomfort within me.
"Doctor Li, if there's nothing else, I'll head upstairs."
I turned to leave.
"Aren't you broken up with Ye Zheng?"
"Doctor Li, that's my personal matter."
"Xia Lanlan, if you're facing difficulties..."
"No, Doctor Li. Thank you for your kindness, but could you please leave now?"
I looked at him; the ash from his cigarette hung long on the tip.
I reached out and lightly touched his cigarette. The ash fell away, drifting like our fleeting connection.
I was tied to Ye Zheng's ship, unable to disembark.
Li Yunfan might have feelings for me, but I couldn't let him help me settle my debts or drag him into my chaotic life.
"I'm going upstairs," I told myself firmly, resolving not to speak again or look back.
"Remember to come for a follow-up tomorrow."
Li Yunfan's voice was low. "Your health is the most important thing; don't let a small illness turn into a big one."
I didn't respond, keeping my head down as I walked into the building, tears streaming down my face.
Ye Zheng was having a lively conversation with a girl named Tian Miaomiao.
But I didn't want to waste any more energy on that.
I poured all my thoughts into work.
At the end of the month, our team received an excellent rating for our performance.
That night, we celebrated with a party, and I was forced to drink several glasses of alcohol.
After days of hard work combined with the effects of alcohol, I felt a sharp pain in my left chest again.
I took some painkillers when I got home and endured until the next day when I went to the hospital. I deliberately avoided Li Yunfan and booked an appointment with another specialist.
However, when I entered the room, I found him sitting at the desk.
