During our last meal together, I said I was going back.
Li Yunfan put down his chopsticks and said, "Xia Lanlan, break up with Ye Zheng."
I shook my head. "Li Yunfan, there are some things I can't say. All I can say is that unless Ye Zheng initiates the breakup, I won't."
"What do you owe him?"
I wanted to say that I owed him a life, a huge amount of medical expenses, and compensation for the accident. Later, when my mother was declared brain dead, Ye Zheng helped me handle her affairs. That was when I found out that my parents had signed organ donation papers. At that moment, I cried so hard that I couldn't stand up; Ye Zheng took care of everything.
"Don't ask anymore. In short, as long as Ye Zheng doesn't initiate the breakup, I can't break up with him."
With red eyes, I said, "Thank you for taking care of me these past few days, Doctor Li... Let's not see each other again."
After saying that, I turned and left.
I changed my clothes, put on my shoes, and walked out of the restaurant.
Li Yunfan didn't chase after me. This was the third time I had rejected him, and I knew he wouldn't come looking for me again.
The Ye family suddenly announced they wanted to arrange an engagement early. Because Ye Meng's health was deteriorating, they wanted to hold the engagement ceremony while she could still go out.
Mother Ye seemed to be discussing it with me, but I knew there was no room for me to refuse. The debt I owed the Ye family could only be repaid with myself.
I silently agreed, and the members of the Ye family visibly sighed in relief.
The engagement ceremony was held at a villa in the northern suburbs, and I was set to arrive three days early with Ye Zheng. The Ye Family hosted a grand banquet, inviting all their relatives and friends. Li Yunfan and his parents were also present, still the most esteemed guests.
To my surprise, there was a striking girl by his side. She was linked to his arm, and they appeared quite intimate. I stole a quick glance before averting my gaze.
These past few days felt like a dream. My brief entanglement with Li Yunfan seemed as if it had never happened. Li Yunfan's mother was an elegant and warm-hearted lady. When Mother Ye introduced us, she took my hand with a gentle and affectionate tone. However, Li Yunfan's demeanor was as cold as ice. When his mother urged him to greet me, he merely nodded slightly before shifting his gaze away.
"Yun Fan..." The girl beside him gently tugged at his sleeve and then smiled at me kindly. "Don't mind him; that's just how Yun Fan is."
I managed a smile in return. "It's fine."
I followed Mother Ye to greet the guests. Ye Zheng had always been afraid of Li Yunfan since childhood and had long kept his distance. Finally finding a moment to myself, I hurried to the restroom. I never quite adapted to occasions like this. My family background was ordinary; both my parents were regular employees, and we associated with common people.
The Ye Family, a wealthy clan, had nothing to do with me. Let alone Li Yunfan. Just now, Mother Ye's obsequious demeanor in front of the Li family made me feel quite uncomfortable. Although it had no direct bearing on me, listening to their flattery made my cheeks flush.
I looked at myself in the mirror, adorned in a lavish gown and expensive jewelry. But this wasn’t the real me; I was merely a puppet on strings. I missed my parents, I missed my old home, but how could one ever return to the past?
Two tears slipped down my cheeks silently, and a blurry figure appeared in the mirror. Was it just my imagination? He was accompanied by a female companion; why would he come looking for me?
“Why are you crying here in secret?” His voice jolted me back to reality. I wanted to turn away, but he pressed down on my shoulder.
“I had planned to ignore you,” he said, taking a slow step closer. He was so tall that even in high heels, I barely reached his chin. He rested his chin on my shoulder and whispered softly, “But that pitiful look you had just now softened my heart.”
“I didn’t—”
“What do you mean you didn’t? The moment I walked in, your eyes were already red.”
“I just haven’t slept well; I’m a bit tired, that’s all.”
