I stood up.
The Ye family members were somewhat surprised as Ye Zheng put down his phone and walked out with me.
Once we reached the lawn, I stopped. The stars shone brightly tonight, and tomorrow would surely be a good day. Guests would arrive in two days for our engagement ceremony. But I knew that this engagement would not take place.
I looked at Ye Zheng and said directly, "Ye Zheng, you don’t need to go through all this trouble."
"What did you say?"
"You just need to prepare an organ donation consent form for me to sign."
"Xia Lanlan."
Ye Zheng's expression changed, "You already know?"
"Ye Meng's kidney rejection is severe; she urgently needs a transplant."
I looked at him calmly, "A month ago, when you took me for a check-up, I had already guessed it."
"Xia Lanlan..."
Ye Zheng frowned, looking somewhat helpless. "Since you know, I won’t hide it from you any longer."
"Meng Meng really does need a kidney, and yours is a perfect match."
My vision began to blur. I knew there was something in that tea, but I still drank it. If this kidney could settle the debts, I was willing. I was willing to leave this world broken but clean.
But I didn’t expect to hear those words.
"If I had known your kidney was the most suitable, we wouldn’t have bothered with your mother’s kidney back then."
"What did you say?"
I staggered as I tried to grab him, but Ye Zheng pushed me away forcefully.
“Xia Lanlan, anyway, you’ll soon be reunited with your family, so it’s fine to tell you.”
“The accident back then was man-made, all for your mother’s kidney.”
“We confirmed that your mother’s kidney is compatible with Meng Meng’s.”
“Your parents signed the donation consent form, but that’s after death… Meng Meng can’t wait.”
“Xia Lanlan, I’m sorry, but I only have one sister, and her life is more important than anything else.”
“I would do anything for her.”
I lay on the ground, the effects of the drug taking hold, leaving me weak all over.
Ye Zheng continued, “Don’t worry, the surgery will be done by my cousin; he’ll stitch you up nicely…”
“By the way, your mother’s kidney was also taken by him.”
When I woke up, I was already strapped to the operating table.
Someone lifted my shirt and wiped my abdomen with alcohol.
I opened my eyes and saw several people in surgical gowns.
My vision was blurry; I couldn’t recognize who was who.
The lead surgeon put on gloves and approached the bed.
I saw a pair of cold eyes.
That gaze turned away indifferently.
I couldn’t move, like a sheep waiting to be slaughtered.
After the initial panic faded, my heart turned to ashes.
I recognized those eyes; they were like Li Yunfan’s, but it wasn’t him.
The scalpel sliced through my flesh, blood gushing out.
Suddenly, the door burst open, and the police rushed in.
I saw Li Yunfan.
He wore a white shirt; I rarely saw anyone who could wear white so cleanly.
My blood stained his shirt red. I wanted to say I was sorry, but no sound came out. I could only use my eyes to convey my feelings to him: Li Yunfan, I'm sorry.
His eyes were red as he held me and walked out, gritting his teeth. "Xia Lanlan, hold on! I won't let anything happen to you!"
I wanted to say that I would be fine, that they hadn't taken my kidney yet. But the feeling of being cared for was too warm. I pressed my face against his chest.
Even if Ye Zheng slandered Li Yunfan, claiming that my mother's kidney was taken by him, I never believed it. He had once stood before us during the oath of office, tears in his eyes, his vows ringing true. I knew he was the best doctor. He would never collude with Ye Zheng. He was the pure and upright Li Yunfan.
I wanted to be the pure and upright Xia Lanlan as well. I thought that one kidney could buy me freedom, but I didn't realize that the Ye Family was already entangled in organ trafficking. They became immensely wealthy because of it.
The beginning of all this was when Ye Zheng's aunt offered a kidney to a wealthy man in her quest for power.
