After putting in a great effort to push open the rusted windows and returning to the sofa, Fu Qingyu found He Xiaozhu curled up into a small ball, hugging a pillow and fast asleep.
The oversized loungewear made her appear even smaller, and the sight of her curled up with the pillow resembled an adorable little hamster clutching a piece of corn.
Fu Qingyu couldn't help but chuckle as he quietly sat down on the sofa and took out his phone to play with.
Moments later, he noticed the unease of the person beside him. Turning his head slightly, he saw that He Xiaozhu was sweating profusely, her eyes closed as she constantly adjusted her sleeping position. Clearly, the warm environment was making her uncomfortable.
With a sigh of resignation, Fu Qingyu thought about how tightly she had wrapped herself up; even her pajamas were long-sleeved and full-length. It was no wonder she was hot.
He pondered ways to make her more comfortable. Taking off her long clothes was obviously not realistic, so he had to settle for something else.
Shaking his head, he reached over to take the pillow from He Xiaozhu's grasp, but his right hand was firmly held in place.
"He Xiaozhu..." Fu Qingyu struggled to pull his hand back but found that the once small and slender He Xiaozhu had an unexpectedly strong grip. He had no choice but to use his left hand to remove the pillow and toss it aside before attempting to free his right hand again. Just then, his phone rang at an inopportune moment, displaying a call from his mother.
Fu Qingyu hurriedly answered, lowering his voice. "Mom, help!"
"What's wrong? Are you being robbed? Is it money or something else?" Mother Fu's usual dry humor almost made him choke on his breath. After finally calming down enough to explain the situation, he anxiously awaited his mother's assistance. To his surprise, she coolly replied over the phone, "Oh, I know about this. That child always has to hold something while sleeping and needs the light on; otherwise, she can't sleep." She then added meaningfully, "Take good care of her; there's no rush to come back," before hanging up.
Fu Qingyu tossed his phone aside and resigned himself to He Xiaozhu's grip on his right hand. As she gradually quieted down, she still didn't seem to be sleeping well; sweat covered her forehead, and her cheeks remained flushed.
Seeing her discomfort, Fu Qingyu inexplicably picked up a magazine from the table and carefully fanned her with it. The gentle breeze brought some relief, causing the furrowed lines on He Xiaozhu's forehead to slowly smooth out as she gradually fell into a more stable sleep.
Fu Qingyu's hands, however, did not dare to stop moving, for as long as he paused, the sweltering heat would cause He Xiaozhu to become restless once more. He let out a long sigh, one hand firmly grasped by her while the other leisurely fanned her with a magazine.
The two were very close; Fu Qingyu sniffed and could even catch the scent of her body wash—a lemon fragrance, clean and refreshing, just the kind of scent he imagined she would like.
He Xiaozhu, sleeping on her side, had her black-framed glasses perched on her face. The stiff frames made her a bit uncomfortable, prompting her to nuzzle her face inward. Seeing this, Fu Qingyu set down the magazine and gently helped her remove the glasses.
Without the rigid black frames obscuring her features, her delicate sleeping face was revealed—her small, palm-sized face adorned with refined features. In slumber, she resembled an innocent child untouched by the world. Her moist and glossy cherry lips were slightly parted, revealing a few tiny teeth that silently tempted a man who could hardly be considered a saint.
Fu Qingyu felt his throat tighten with dryness as he blinked, the innocent sleeping visage lingering in his mind.
In that moment of blankness, he leaned down and lightly kissed her like a dragonfly touching water. Then, in a flurry of panic at He Xiaozhu's unconscious murmur, he straightened up quickly and grabbed the magazine to fan her again, his heart pounding like thunder in his ears. Fu Qingyu thought to himself, "Ah Fu Qingyu, you must be out of your mind! You must be!"
