The prison was not as dark, terrifying, or filled with wails as one might imagine. Instead, it was filled with the chatter of inmates, gossiping about everything under the sun, more so than the old women sitting under the big locust tree at the village entrance.
As I sat on a pile of straw in the corner of my cell, I thought that no matter what difficulties I faced in the future, I could always say, "I have been to prison," which felt quite empowering.
I pulled out two buns from my pocket, sniffed them, kissed them lightly, and then began to eat.
Just then, I heard a soft chuckle beside me.
Looking up, I saw a man standing in the adjacent cell, waving a black feather fan at me. His appearance was enough to embody the phrase "like a jade tree swaying in the wind."
"Miss, I didn't expect your appetite to remain undiminished even in prison," he teased, his fan swaying back and forth.
I immediately choked on my food and began to pound my chest, struggling to catch my breath.
It was him—the gentleman who had competed with me for the last piece of glutinous rice cake on East Andong Street a few days ago. I was furious when he snatched it away at a high price. As I brushed past him, I accidentally stepped on his foot and ended up apologizing while also slipping some coins from his purse.
I blushed and glared at him through the bars of my cell. "You..."
"I am Feng Huai Jin," he said with a mischievous smile. "May I ask for your name, Miss? After spending so much silver to buy your name, it wouldn't be considered bullying, would it?"
I felt even more flustered and pounded on the cell door desperately, managing to croak out a few words: "Help... help... me..."
Feng Huai Jin—who didn't know that name? He was none other than the Seventeenth Prince of the current emperor. What was he doing here? A day trip to prison?
My movements attracted Shu Zhan Yan. The moment I saw him, it felt as if a serf had encountered the liberating army; I could only express my heartfelt emotions through tears.
With one hand pointing at Feng Huai Jin and the other clutching Shu Zhan Yan's collar, I poured out my feelings: "You’re dead..."
Not in the sense of being dead or a ghost, but because you captured the Seventeenth Prince! You’re asking for death!
My brain felt starved of oxygen, my body grew heavy, and my eyes rolled back as I fainted.
In my dazed state, I thought to myself, I survived an accident in the twentieth century, I didn’t die when I crossed over to ancient times with nothing to my name, and now, if I were to be killed by a bun, that would truly be embarrassing.
After a long while, a warm sensation brushed against my lips, and water flowed down my throat. I suddenly opened my eyes to see Shu Zhan Yan’s enlarged face. I quickly scrambled to the corner of the wall, filled with indignation: "Shu Zhan Constable! You’re taking advantage of me!"
We were in another room, slightly enclosed; it was clear he had something to say.
Shu Zhan Yan set down the water he was holding. "Ling Tan, did you hear anything suspicious while in your cell?"
His question amused me: "After all this fuss, you came to make me an undercover agent? Undercover work has its price—braised chicken wings and spicy pork intestines, no bargaining."
Shu Zhan Yan crossed his arms and approached me, his eyes sparkling enticingly. "You go first." So I began to recall what the prisoners in the cell had been discussing.
Oh, they said that the Minister of Justice in the capital had offended some deity and was transferred to this godforsaken little county as a Zhan Yan. If he could resolve the county's issues within three months, he would be reassigned back to the capital—considered a "rural experience."
Before crossing over, I loved reading Sherlock Holmes and Detective Conan; they were filled with strong logic.
After my time travel, I became particularly adept at deciphering the trivialities of family matters and palace secrets. Can you guess what? That unfortunate soul, Minister of Justice, happens to share the surname Shu!
Now I understand why Shu Zhan Yan wants to expel me from Li'an City; he believes I am the greatest criminal threat in the entire city... What a curse, I sigh.
Of course, these are not the main points. At least I think that Shu Zhan Constable wouldn't be bored enough to want to know these things; his inquiries must have another reason.
I poured out my enthusiasm, "Shu Zhan Constable, even the Seventeenth Prince dares to be imprisoned; are you trying to court disaster?! Every word dripped with blood and tears, filled with deep emotion.
Shu Zhan Yan looked puzzled, "After staying in prison for so many days, why is it only you he chooses to introduce himself to?"
I didn’t care about his reasons; I didn’t want to get involved in this murky water: "That's all I know. The promised braised chicken wings and dry pot intestines should be served now."
Shu Zhan Yan held my hand... in shackles: "I never agreed to that." With that, he sent me back to where I was before.
At that moment, I even had the thought of wanting to crush him.
