In Nanjing, at the Li residence.
The new-style cheongsam in Lotus Pink accentuated her slender figure even more. Her thick hair was elegantly pinned up, with a few strands falling softly beside her ivory-colored cheeks, adding a touch of allure. Qiao Lu couldn't understand why such an exceptional Young Mistress was not favored by the young master.
Qiao Lu stormed into the room, her face flushed with anger. Upon seeing Yun Ya sitting in front of the mirror, applying her makeup, the fury inside her felt like a grenade that had its safety pin pulled—“Boom!” it exploded: “The young master actually brought a performer back to the villa yesterday! Young Mistress, you’ve been married to him for less than a year. It’s one thing for him to fool around outside, but how could he bring someone home!”
Yun Ya's eyes flickered as she paused in her task of shaping her eyebrows and asked in a low voice, “Tell me everything in detail. Who did he meet yesterday? Why would he suddenly bring someone from outside home?”
Just then, the door creaked open, and Li Yunfu entered with an air of coldness surrounding him. He casually loosened his cloak and handed it to Qiao Lu as she approached, raising an eyebrow at Yun Ya: “Since you’re so concerned about me, why not ask me directly who I met yesterday and what I said?” His words carried an underlying meaning.
The man before her was dressed in a sharp military uniform, his handsome features strikingly beautiful, yet they sent a shiver down Yun Ya's spine. She forced a laugh and shifted her gaze to his upright collar, smirking sarcastically, “I’m just worried you might have attracted some unsavory characters outside and caught some filthy disease to pass on to me.”
In the past, such remarks would have sent Li Yunfu into a rage, slamming the door behind him. However, today he merely suppressed his anger and smiled faintly. He stepped closer to Yun Ya, leaning over her chair and trapping her between the backrest and himself.
Yun Ya pressed tightly against the chair, trying to evade the chilling aura emanating from him. Her hands clutched at the cheongsam, betraying her inner anxiety and tension.
Then came his overwhelming kiss. The faint scent of tobacco mixed with blood filled Yun Ya’s senses as he bit down on her lip like a beast. This fierce kiss filled her with fear and trembling, yet there was no escape; she was playing the role of a concerned wife.
Time seemed to stretch indefinitely until the relentless intimacy finally ceased. Yun Ya found herself sinking into the soft mattress, staring blankly at the ceiling. The lingering atmosphere of lust had not fully dissipated, clouding her mind and unexpectedly bringing back memories of when they had just married.
Back then, Li Yunfu would come home every day to spend time with her, unlike now when he often stayed out all night. Sometimes when she felt downcast, he would take her out to watch plays or listen to music; though they never expressed love openly, they treated each other with respect.
When did things change to this state? She could no longer remember.
"What are you thinking about?" In the stillness of the night, Li Yunfu's voice was slightly hoarse. After waiting for a long time without receiving a response from Yun Ya, his inner irritation began to stir again. "There's a celebration banquet the night after tomorrow. You’ll accompany me," he commanded.
"I'm not going," Yun Ya replied decisively.
Li Yunfu laughed in anger, turning to glare at half of Yun Ya's face. "Aren't you afraid that I might encounter some unsavory characters at the banquet?"
He actually used her own words against her. Yun Ya gritted her teeth, considering her current role, and reluctantly nodded in agreement. After a moment of silence, she asked, "Whose celebration banquet is it?"
"Mine." Li Yunfu's voice suddenly became much lighter, tinged with a hint of pride. "Have you heard about the student protests that happened recently? I caught their leader, and the Commander is throwing this banquet for me."
For a moment, the room was so quiet that only their breathing could be heard.
Yun Ya felt her heart skip a beat. She quietly covered her chest, suppressing the turmoil within her, and feigned calmness as she said, "Really? I heard that group of students is quite cunning. You better not get too complacent; if he escapes, be careful that the Commander doesn't come looking for you."
Li Yunfu snorted coldly. "It's been so long, and none of those useless scholars have managed to escape."
Yun Ya clenched her fists, turned around, and pretended to be curious as she looked at Li Yunfu. "Oh really? Where have you hidden them? At our place?"
Li Yunfu chuckled lightly, the darkness concealing the depth in his gaze. "This matter is known only to me and my deputy. There's a secret dungeon beneath my office. Have you seen my silver key engraved with 'LY'? Without that key, even if the king himself came, he wouldn't be able to escape."
Yun Ya knew about that key; it was silver and about the size of a finger, always carried by Li Yunfu. Right now, it lay in his pants pocket, which was resting on the chair in front of the vanity.
Pale moonlight streamed through the window and illuminated a corner of the floor where the key glinted with a cold silver light.
