The train did not reach Nanjing; the city was completely surrounded by the Japanese army. Besides cars, Yun Ya could hardly get into Nanjing City.
In this war-torn era, crowds of refugees were everywhere, truly a scene of sorrow and despair.
The car that Yun Ya was driving was one she had picked up along the way. At that time, there were two Chinese people in the vehicle who had been brutally harmed by the Japanese soldiers. One of the women was completely naked, her body marred with injuries, and the seat was soaked in blood. Holding back her nausea, she pulled the woman down and then took a knife from her pocket to cut her hair, changing into the male attire she had prepared long ago.
Just as she was about to step on the gas, a hand suddenly gripped the steering wheel.
Yun Ya jumped in shock. When she saw who it was, she relaxed slightly but then furrowed her brow. “Feng Chen, how… how did you follow me?!”
Feng Chen quickly got into the car, pushing Yun Ya into the passenger seat while sternly saying, “With your driving skills, you think you can get to Nanjing City?”
Yun Ya tightened her grip on the steering wheel and stared at Feng Chen. She asked again, “How did you come here?”
Feng Chen didn’t answer directly but continued with his own thoughts: “Back when we were still in school, you insisted I teach you how to drive. I initially disagreed, but you said that in chaotic times, learning something new could mean more chances to survive. It was that very sentence that made me fall in love with you.”
This was nearly two years ago. Yun Ya vaguely remembered that shortly after they started spending time together, students at their school organized protests against the government. Feng Chen was one of the organizers. Young and impetuous, Yun Ya immediately joined him, her main task being to persuade classmates to participate in the protests. Then the police sent people to suppress them; many classmates disappeared. Driven by guilt and responsibility, she chose to marry Li Yunfu, who was responsible for that incident, to gather information.
Time passed swiftly; no one expected they would end up in this situation today. Yun Ya withdrew her hand from the steering wheel and took off a jade bracelet from her wrist, offering it to Feng Chen. “This bracelet should have been returned to you long ago. Feng Chen, I’m going back to find my husband; I don’t want to implicate you.” Her tone softened when she mentioned her husband, tinged with a hint of regret.
Feng Chen turned to look at Yun Ya intently before his gaze fell on the bracelet, and the light in his eyes dimmed instantly. “You’re overthinking it.” He suddenly smiled. “I was worried that Li Yunfu would discover your true identity and harm you; that’s why I went to Chongqing to find you. Since you’re fine now, I naturally want to return and join my classmates. They are still in Nanjing City, preparing to fight the enemy to the death.”
“You…”
"I feel the same way, ready to perish alongside those little devils," he said, his gaze filled with unwavering determination. With that, he started the car and headed towards Nanjing City.
The entire Nanjing City was in chaos. The abandoned populace, hearing the distant sounds of gunfire and explosions, looked pale and frantic, like headless flies darting aimlessly about.
Yun Ya struggled against the tide of fleeing people, each step a challenge. Originally, Feng Chen had planned to personally escort Yun Ya back to the Li family, but as soon as they got out of the car, the crowd had swept them apart.
She craned her neck, searching for familiar faces, but was pushed to the far edge of the street, feeling lost and anxious until her head collided with a sign from a restaurant that had collapsed at some point.
Yun Ya recognized this restaurant because its northeast side was where she had lived for nearly a year at the Li family courtyard.
Finally, Yun Ya returned to the Li Family Courtyard.
The servants in the courtyard had all scattered. As the sun set, the house was engulfed in darkness. Yun Ya accidentally kicked a table leg, producing a loud thud; perhaps a cup or dish had rolled off the table and shattered on the floor, its sharp sound echoing eerily in the empty room.
"Who is it?" Li Yunfu's voice came out gravelly and rough, as if filled with sand. Accompanying his voice was the sound of a bottle rolling, coming to rest at Yun Ya's feet.
Suddenly, the lights in the room blazed bright.
As Yun Ya bent down to pick up the bottle at her feet, she froze. She felt a burning gaze piercing into her back; time seemed to stand still, and in that moment, the room was silent enough to hear their breaths.
"Looks like you've really drunk too much," Li Yunfu said with a bitter smile before slumping back down to the ground. He took a swig from a bottle beside him and then set it down to continue cleaning his gun.
Yun Ya straightened up and took a few steps towards Li Yunfu, looking down at him from above.
Li Yunfu raised his gaze, a flicker of confusion passing through his eyes before they suddenly brightened. He slightly leaned forward and grasped Yun Ya's wrist. "It's you, it really is you..." Before he could finish his sentence, his tone turned fierce. "How did you come back?! Where is Feng Chen? Didn't I tell him to find you? Get out of here, get out!" As he spoke, he shoved Yun Ya roughly.
Suddenly, a deafening roar echoed in their ears, and thick smoke billowed up from the horizon. The two turned to look, and Li Yunfu's face went pale.
They had come; there was no way to escape.
