History will forever remember this day, the first day of the Nanjing Massacre.
Li Yunfu's team had been completely annihilated. Amidst the billowing smoke, the atrocities of burning, killing, and looting continued unabated. The sounds of gunfire and cannon fire filled the air, mingled with the cries of the people. The so-called killing game by the Japanese was in full swing as they ruthlessly slaughtered unarmed Chinese civilians.
Yun Ya witnessed a woman clutching a child being brutally mistreated by the Japanese soldiers, a surge of blood rushing to her head. She was about to rush out recklessly when Li Yunfu quickly pulled her back.
Yun Ya turned around, struggling as she said, "Let go of me!"
Li Yunfu's face turned pale. "Are you crazy? You can't save her!"
As the two argued, suddenly two gunshots rang out, followed by shouts from the Japanese soldiers. Yun Ya peeked out and caught sight of Feng Chen turning into a side street, with Japanese soldiers hastily pursuing him.
Yun Ya froze for a moment, and then a loud explosion erupted nearby, sending debris flying. Everything fell into silence.
Her gaze became vacant as she murmured, "Feng Chen..." Suddenly feeling a tight pain in her arm, she noticed that Li Yunfu was gripping her arm even harder, his expression growing even darker.
"We can't save anyone, but we can take down a few more Japanese soldiers, right?" The words Feng Chen had said in the car echoed in her mind. Yun Ya turned to look at Li Yunfu with determination in her eyes. "You've been ready to go down with these Japanese soldiers all along, haven't you? Yunfu, let's do this together."
Li Yunfu forced a bitter smile. His once-groomed appearance was now covered in dirt as he suddenly pulled Yun Ya into his embrace, holding her tightly as if he wanted to meld her into himself. In a hoarse voice, he said, "Alright."
The endless gunfire made the pain in their bodies feel insignificant.
After Li Yunfu shielded Yun Ya from a fatal shot, they could no longer hold on any longer.
Yun Ya had lost even the strength to cry, feeling her eyes dry and painful. Supporting herself against Li Yunfu, they stumbled into a nearby building and collapsed onto the ground.
Blood continued to pour from Li Yunfu's wounds, and he could feel his life slowly slipping away.
Yun Ya lay beside him, her expression serene. Even as the footsteps of the pursuing Japanese grew closer and death approached, she smiled. Gently stroking her abdomen, she said to Li Yunfu, "It's a pity for our child; they haven't even come into this world to see it, and now they will have to accompany us."
Li Yunfu, whose eyes had lost their luster, slowly grasped Yun Ya's hand and replied, "There is no child. I let the doctor deceive Qiao Lu... there is no child..."
Yun Ya's hand stiffened for a moment before she suddenly smiled and said, "Li Yunfu, what have I done to deserve your deep affection?" Did he think that by deceiving her with the doctor's words he could keep her from seeking him? Did he believe she would preserve her own life for the sake of a child while disregarding whether he had already fallen to the Japanese bullets? Suddenly, Yun Ya hugged Li Yunfu tightly, tears streaming down her face.
Then, warm breath brushed against her ear as Li Yunfu asked a question that made Yun Ya freeze: "Can you tell me... what your real name is?"
Li Yunfu chuckled softly. "I knew from the first day you married in that you weren't Yun Ya. Although I wasn't present for both matchmaking meetings, I had seen a photo of Yun Ya. What is your name? I'm truly afraid that when I reach the underworld, I won't be able to find you."
"Qin Huai, my name is Qin Huai," Yun Ya replied gently with a smile. "I was born by the Qinhuai River; my mother named me Qin Huai."
"Qin Huai... no wonder you love listening to 'Qin Huai Jing' so much." Li Yunfu nuzzled against Yun Ya's neck, calling out her name repeatedly: "Qin Huai... Qin Huai... Qin Huai..."
Yun Ya responded softly each time: "I'm here, I'm here, I'm here."
"When I saw you on our wedding day, I knew you would be my wife, no matter who you were. Perhaps this is what they call love at first sight. Qin Huai, I fell in love with you at first sight."
"I don't know when I fell in love with you; I only know that I love you."
Li Yunfu chuckled softly, revealing a row of pristine white teeth. "Let me sing 'Qin Huai Jing' for you again."
"Sure."
The Japanese quickly surrounded the two of them, and unnoticed by anyone, Yun Ya pulled the safety pins from five grenades.
Amidst the deafening explosion, the man's hoarse voice sang out "Qin Huai Jing": "The sounds of Suzhou melodies, beside the tunes of Jiangnan. The clear notes speak of my homeland, the charm of Yangtze is delicate. A tune with subtle emotions, playing again through a vibrant spring night. Gentle warmth tugs at my heart, softly stirring the blush away. Oh, how finely it unfolds, Si Si, Dai Dai. Wu Di Mei Ren Yin, Qin Huai leaves have fallen..."
His singing seemed to linger even as everything settled into silence.
Yun Ya felt stars flashing before her eyes; she didn’t even notice when the force knocked her to the ground. As she lowered her hands from her face, her pale skin contrasted sharply with the crimson, stinging Li Yunfu's eyes from a distance.
Yun Ya's thoughts were still in disarray when she heard the sound of leather shoes fading away. Then came the sound of a door closing; she knew Li Yunfu had left.
Only then did the metallic taste of blood reach her mind. Whether it was because the tension in her heart had suddenly snapped or because of the overwhelming scent of blood that stimulated her senses, suddenly, Yun Ya collapsed heavily back to the ground and lost consciousness.
