Yun Ya took two days to relax Qiao Lu's watch over her, and then, on this night, she quietly slipped out of the small villa.
She didn't know if Li Yunfu was still alive. That man, who kept everything hidden in his heart, probably already knew that she was a spy lurking by his side; he just chose to remain silent about it.
She recalled that during the blooming of the phoenix flowers in June, one day Li Yunfu returned home reeking of alcohol, grabbed her hand, and said many incomprehensible things. At the time, she hadn’t paid much attention, but now, looking back, every word and even every expression of Li Yunfu was vivid in her mind.
He said, “My mother passed away long ago, and my father took Aunt as his legitimate wife. Initially, Aunt treated me very well on the surface, but after she had her own son, she began to distance herself from me. After spending a long time with Aunt and growing up a bit, I started to suspect the cause of my mother’s death. Later, I found out that Aunt had secretly manipulated things behind my back, so I killed her with my own hands. At that time, I thought I would only marry one wife in the future; I would treat her very well so that our son could live a life of peace and joy, unlike mine.”
At that moment, Yun Ya was sitting on the sofa listening to the gramophone; the melodious tune echoed in the bedroom, so Li Yunfu's voice wasn't very clear. She picked out one point that caught her attention and asked with disdain, “She is your Aunt; how could you dare to kill someone at such a young age?”
Li Yunfu snorted coldly: “The woman I despise most in this life is someone like my Aunt—two-faced.” When he said this, his gaze towards Yun Ya seemed to carry deep meaning, but she didn’t notice. Just then, the gramophone finished playing a record; Yun Ya lifted the needle and placed another record on.
In the pause between songs, she heard a soft sigh and then felt Li Yunfu's warm breath against her skin; it turned into a night of intimacy.
After that day, Li Yunfu rarely returned home.
Later on, rumors of Li Yunfu's romantic escapades spread far and wide.
However, Yun Ya never paid attention to these things, just as she had never cared about how much affection Li Yunfu had once shown her.
She remembered how Li Yunfu had personally washed her feet, how he had cooked for her himself. He knew she liked listening to "Qin Huai Jing" and had even learned it just to sing it for her every night to help her fall asleep.
At the bustling train station in Chongqing, a passerby bumped into Yun Ya, pulling her back from her memories. She stretched her neck and peered around until she finally spotted the ticket counter. She squeezed through the crowd with determination to buy a ticket to Nanjing.
The ticket seller looked up at Yun Ya with concern and said, “There’s fighting over there right now. Madam, do you have something important you must attend to?”
"My husband is in Nanjing." As soon as the words left her lips, someone suddenly patted her shoulder heavily. Yun Ya turned around.
Feng Chen, carrying a burden, grinned at Yun Ya. "It's really you! Where are you going?" His gaze fell on the ticket in Yun Ya's hand, and he abruptly reached out to snatch it away, eyes wide in disbelief. "You're going back to Nanjing?"
Yun Ya didn't answer; an ominous premonition surged within her as she countered, "How did you end up in Chongqing?"
Feng Chen's eyes flickered for a moment.
"Is it about Li Yunfu...?"
Feng Chen sighed quietly, but before he could finish his thought, Yun Ya had already seized the ticket and dashed away. He shouted after her, "Come back! You can't just marry Li Yunfu, who was in charge of this incident, to gather information."
Time passed swiftly, and no one expected that they would end up in such a situation today. Yun Ya withdrew her hand from the steering wheel and took off the jade bracelet from her wrist, offering it to Feng Chen. "This bracelet should have been returned to you long ago. Feng Chen, I'm going back to find my husband; I don't want to drag you into this." Her tone softened with a hint of reluctant affection when she mentioned her husband.
Feng Chen turned to look at Yun Ya intently, then shifted his gaze to the bracelet, the light in his eyes extinguishing instantly. "You're overthinking it." He suddenly smiled. "I was worried that Li Yunfu would discover your true identity and harm you, which is why I came to Chongqing to find you. Since you're fine, I naturally need to return and be with my classmates; they're still in Nanjing City, preparing to fight the Japanese to the death."
"You..."
"I'm the same; I'm ready to fight the Japanese to the death." His eyes were filled with unwavering determination. After speaking, he immediately started the car and headed towards Nanjing City.
The entire Nanjing City was in chaos. The abandoned populace listened to the distant sounds of gunfire and explosions, their faces pale as they stumbled around like headless flies.
Yun Ya moved against the tide of fleeing people, struggling every step of the way. In fact, Feng Chen had originally planned to personally escort Yun Ya back to the Li family, but as soon as they got out of the car, they were swept apart by the crowd.
She stretched her neck and looked around anxiously, pushed into a corner of the street by the throng, feeling lost until her head collided with a sign from a restaurant that had collapsed at some point.
Yun Ya recognized this restaurant because the Li Family Courtyard, where she had lived for nearly a year, was just to the northeast of it.
Finally, Yun Ya had returned to the Li Family Courtyard.
The servants in the courtyard had all dispersed, and as the sun set, the house fell into darkness. Yun Ya accidentally kicked the leg of a table, and with a sharp sound, it seemed that cups and dishes on the table rolled to the ground, their crisp clatter echoing painfully in the empty room.
"Who is it?" Li Yunfu's voice was rough and gravelly, as if filled with sand. Accompanying his voice was the sound of a bottle rolling, coming to a stop at Yun Ya's feet.
Suddenly, the lights in the room blazed bright.
As Yun Ya bent down to pick up the bottle at her feet, she froze. She felt a searing gaze burning into her back, and time seemed to stand still; the room was so quiet that they could hear each other's breathing.
"Indeed, you’re drunk," Li Yunfu said with a bitter smile before slumping back down to the floor. He took a swig from a bottle of liquor beside him, set it down, and continued wiping his gun.
Yun Ya straightened up and walked a few steps to stand before Li Yunfu, looking down at him from above.
Li Yunfu lifted his gaze slightly; confusion flickered in his eyes before clarity washed over him. He sat up a bit and grabbed Yun Ya's wrist. "It's you, it really is you..." Before he could finish his sentence, his tone suddenly turned fierce. "Why are you back?! Where is Feng Chen? Didn’t I tell him to find you? Get out! Get out!" He pushed Yun Ya away forcefully as he spoke.
Suddenly, a loud explosion rang in their ears, and thick smoke billowed into the sky. The two turned towards the sound, and Li Yunfu's face turned pale instantly.
They were here; there was no way out.
