History will forever remember this day, the first day of the Nanjing Massacre.
Li Yunfu's team had been completely annihilated, and amidst the billowing smoke, the atrocities of burning, killing, and looting continued unabated. The sounds of gunfire and cannon blasts filled the air, accompanied by cries and shouts that shook the heavens. The so-called killing game of the Japanese was in full swing as they ruthlessly slaughtered unarmed Chinese civilians.
Yun Ya witnessed a woman holding a child being brutally mistreated by the Japanese soldiers, and a surge of anger welled up within her. She was about to rush out recklessly when Li Yunfu quickly pulled her back.
Yun Ya turned around, struggling against his grip. "Let go of me!"
Li Yunfu's face was ashen. "Are you crazy? You can't save her!"
As the two argued, suddenly there were two gunshots followed by shouts from the Japanese soldiers. Yun Ya leaned out to see Feng Chen turning into a side street, with Japanese soldiers hastily pursuing him.
Yun Ya froze for a moment, and then a loud explosion erupted nearby, sending debris flying. Everything fell silent.
Her gaze became vacant as she murmured, "Feng Chen..." Suddenly feeling a tight pain in her arm, she realized Li Yunfu was gripping it even harder, his expression growing more severe.
"We can't save anyone, but we can take down a few more Japanese soldiers, right?" The words Feng Chen had said in the car echoed in her mind. Yun Ya turned to Li Yunfu with determination in her eyes. "You've been ready to go down with these Japanese soldiers all along, haven't you? Yunfu, let's do this together."
Li Yunfu gave a bitter smile. His once-genteel demeanor was now tarnished by dirt and chaos as he suddenly pulled Yun Ya into his embrace, holding her tightly as if he wanted to meld her into himself. In a hoarse voice, he said, "Alright."
The relentless gunfire continued; the pain in their bodies no longer mattered.
After Li Yunfu shielded Yun Ya from a fatal shot, they could no longer hold on any longer.
Yun Ya had lost the strength to cry; her eyes felt painfully dry. Leaning against Li Yunfu, they stumbled into a nearby building and collapsed onto the ground.
Blood continued to pour from Li Yunfu's wounds, and he could feel his life slowly slipping away.
Yun Ya lay beside him, her expression serene. Even as the footsteps of the pursuing Japanese soldiers grew closer, and death loomed nearer, she smiled. She gently caressed her abdomen and said to Li Yunfu, “It’s a pity for our child. They haven’t even come into this world to see it, and now they will have to accompany us.”
Li Yunfu, whose eyes had lost their luster, slowly grasped Yun Ya's hand and replied, “There is no child. I let the doctor deceive Qiao Lu… there is no child…”
Yun Ya's hand stiffened for a moment before she suddenly smiled and said, “Li Yunfu, what have I done to deserve your deep affection?” Did he think that by having the doctor deceive her, he could keep her from searching for him? Did he believe she would spare her own life for the sake of a child while disregarding whether he had already fallen to the Japanese bullets? Suddenly, Yun Ya hugged Li Yunfu tightly, tears streaming down her face.
Then, a warm breath brushed against her ear as Li Yunfu asked a question that made her entire body stiffen: “Can you tell me… what your real name is?”
Li Yunfu chuckled softly. “The day you married over, I knew you weren’t Yun Ya. Although I wasn’t present for our two blind dates, I had seen a photo of Yun Ya. What is your name? I’m really afraid that when I reach the underworld, I won’t be able to find you.”
“Qin Huai, my name is Qin Huai,” Yun Ya replied gently with a smile. “I was born by the Qinhuai River; my mother named me Qin Huai.”
“Qin Huai… no wonder you love listening to 'Qin Huai Jing' so much.” Li Yunfu nuzzled against Yun Ya’s neck and called out, “Qin Huai… Qin Huai… Qin Huai…”
Yun Ya responded softly with each call: “I’m here, I’m here, I’m here.”
“The day I saw you on our wedding day, I knew you would be my wife, no matter who you were. Perhaps this is what they call love at first sight. Qin Huai, I fell in love with you at first sight.”
“I don’t know when I fell in love with you; all I know is that I love you.”
Li Yunfu chuckled softly, revealing a row of neat, white teeth. "Let me sing 'Qin Huai Jing' for you again."
"Sure."
The Japanese quickly surrounded the two of them, and unnoticed by anyone, Yun Ya pulled the safety pins from five grenades.
Amidst the deafening explosions, the man's hoarse voice sang out "Qin Huai Jing": "The sounds of Suzhou ballads, accompanied by the tunes of Jiangnan. The clear notes speak of my homeland, while the elegance of Yangzi charms. A melody of subtle emotions, playing again through a passionate spring night. Tenderly pulling at my heartstrings, softly stirring the blush away. Gently now, let it flow, Si Si, Dai Dai. Wu Di Mei Ren Yin, Qin Huai leaves have fallen..."
His song seemed to linger in the air, but everything had already settled into silence.
