They were not yet married, but the servants of the Zhao Family referred to Ruan Tingyu as the Young Mistress. The parents of the Zhao Family had long gone to Hong Kong, and Zhao Shanxing only wanted to stop here briefly to avoid trouble before heading to Hong Kong. To ensure a smooth escape, he needed to rely on Commander Yu's military power to eliminate his enemies and provide protection. However, on the day he visited Commander Yu, he caught the attention of Yu Biyun. Commander Yu, not wanting his efforts to be in vain, was also interested in a marriage alliance between their families. Unfortunately, Zhao Shanxing felt no attraction towards Yu Biyun, which delayed matters.
Ruan Tingyu was not in a hurry; for her, as long as she was with Zhao Shanxing, it didn't matter where they were. She no longer had to face those annoying men or wander the streets. This life was far more comfortable than being a consort in the palace. The only downside was that Zhao Shanxing seemed to indulge in nightly escapades, which she found hard to tolerate. When she complained to him about it, Zhao Shanxing innocently replied that he was lonely and if she bore him a son to keep him company, he would behave.
Uh… better hurry up and have a son.
Sitting on a swing in the garden, Ruan Tingyu was contemplating how to conceive a son when suddenly a servant in the yard screamed. A car sped into the courtyard, and four men rushed toward her. Just as she prepared to defend herself after a long period of inactivity, she froze as if paralyzed; each of the four men was holding a gun, their dark muzzles aimed directly at her.
Ruan Tingyu's eyes were covered with a black cloth, and she felt herself being taken to an open space where the wind howled around her. The cloth was suddenly ripped away, and it took her a moment to adjust to the blinding sunlight. She realized she was tied to a target with many others lined up beside her; this must be a training ground for soldiers. As she saw someone approaching from the front, a chill ran from her feet to the top of her head—it was Yu Biyun.
"Miss Yu, is your leg better?" Ruan Tingyu struggled to think of something to say that would bring them closer.
Yu Biyun was supported by someone as she walked up to Ruan Tingyu, glaring coldly at her. "You wicked woman! To seduce Zhao Shanxing, you dared to injure me and made me lie in bed for half a year before I could barely walk."
"That... that was just an accident! Really, I meant for you to bump into me," Ruan Tingyu defended herself innocently.
"I don't believe your nonsense! You won't leave here alive today."
"If you kill me, Shanhang will blame you and won't marry you."
"Hmph! I don’t want to marry him anymore either. I've never suffered such humiliation before; killing you is just for my own satisfaction. Now that Zhao Shanxing is with my father, he won't fare any better. You two dogs will not survive today." Yu Biyun said fiercely.
"Just deal with me if you want to kill me; don’t harm Shanhang!" Upon hearing that Zhao Shanxing was with Commander Yu, Ruan Tingyu panicked. When scholars encounter soldiers, reason fails; she had heard that Commander Yu came from humble beginnings, and no matter how eloquent Zhao Shanxing might be, he could hardly protect himself.
Worried about Zhao Shanxing, Ruan Tingyu was frantic, twisting her body and struggling against her bindings. Unfortunately, her hands were tied too tightly for her to break free. Yu Biyun watched her with a cold smile, stepping back and signaling to several armed soldiers behind her. Instantly, the guns in their hands were aimed at Ruan Tingyu.
She hadn't seen Zhao Shanxing yet, and she didn't want to die. Suddenly, Ruan Tingyu felt a surge of self-loathing; her adoptive father had taught her the art of contortionism, but she had been too afraid of the pain to learn it properly. If she had mastered it, she wouldn't be tied up here, serving as a target.
At that critical moment, a military vehicle sped towards them, and a person inside shouted, "Don't shoot!"
But before the words could settle, one soldier's gun fired with a bang.
Ruan Tingyu slowly closed her eyes. Just before losing consciousness, she saw Zhao Shanxing rushing out of the vehicle, followed closely by a man in military uniform. His anxious and pained expression was so familiar; it felt like she had seen him somewhere before.
It was as if a key had suddenly unlocked the gates of her memory. In her childhood recollections, her father in uniform would often let her ride on his shoulders, proudly showing off his adorable daughter to anyone who would listen. Her father led troops into battle while her mother took her to the army base. They had encountered enemy attacks along the way; amidst the thunderous sounds of cannon fire, she was shielded by her mother… The next memories were of the man she called her adoptive father forcing her and several orphans to practice and perform…
After death, one truly steps into darkness. Was she in hell? No way; she hadn't done anything wrong in this life—at most, she had bumped into Yu Biyun once. Did that warrant being sent to hell? But this hell wasn't so bad; there was even a bed. Oh, there was someone beside her. Ruan Tingyu reached out to touch him, and the person who had been lying down suddenly sat up excitedly and said, "Tingyu, you’re awake?"
It was Zhao Shanxing's voice. Ruan Tingyu felt overwhelmed with emotion as she grasped his hand and exclaimed, "Shanxing, how did you end up in hell too?!"
"Hell?"
"Yeah. I don't know if we can be reborn. If we can be reborn, keep your distance from me; what if we accidentally end up as siblings? In our next life, we wouldn't be able to be together." Ruan Tingyu said anxiously.
"Pfft—" Zhao Shanxing laughed out loud. Not just him; others joined in as well. Then with a loud snap, the lights came on brightly.
Ruan Tingyu shielded her eyes from the bright light above, and as she adjusted to the illumination, she realized she was in a lavish bedroom. On the wall opposite her hung numerous photographs, and the mother and daughter in those pictures were all too familiar.
“Foolish girl, after all this time, your father finally finds you, and you’re thinking about reincarnation?” Commander Yu said with a mix of laughter and tears. At that moment, a soldier had heard the shout and misfired his gun, but the sound had startled her into unconsciousness.
Ruan Tingyu looked at him, tears welling up in her eyes. She called out, “Dad.” Memories flooded back to her; she remembered everything. She opened her arms and embraced Commander Yu as he walked over, crying out, “I searched for you so desperately, Dad. Mom died trying to save me…”
“I know. Heaven has been kind to me, allowing me to see you again in my lifetime. It was close; if I hadn’t noticed the jade pendant around Shanxing’s neck in time, I could have made a grave mistake,” Commander Yu recalled the moment with lingering fear. He had summoned Zhao Shanxing to confront him about his change of heart but had been provoked by Zhao’s words and impulsively grabbed his collar, discovering the chipped jade pendant. It was a family heirloom from the Yu family that he had personally placed around his wife’s neck when she gave birth to their daughter.
“Father-in-law, since Tingyu is your daughter, you wouldn’t oppose our marriage, would you?” Zhao Shanxing asked earnestly.
“Hmph, you little brat! Your words were too harsh this morning; you nearly gave me a heart attack! My daughter marrying you would mean a lifetime of suffering for her. No way; this matter needs careful consideration,” Commander Yu said with a stern expression.
Both Zhao Shanxing and Ruan Tingyu were taken aback. How did good news turn into bad? Anxious and feeling nauseous, Ruan Tingyu covered her mouth and began to retch.
“Ha ha, Father-in-law, there’s no need for further deliberation; time will reveal everything,” Zhao Shanxing said with a smug smile, glancing at Ruan Tingyu’s belly.
Commander Yu ground his teeth and muttered, “Scoundrel.”
