When Bai Xiao Tu woke up again, the terrifying werewolf was no longer by her side. Instead, she found herself in a cozy bamboo house, accompanied by the gentle Master Lan Ruo.
“Master, how did I end up here? Wasn’t I captured by a werewolf?” Bai Xiao Tu asked, touching the large bump on the back of her head in confusion.
“I drove them away; you’re safe now. Bai Xiao Tu, I’m sorry you had to go through that,” Lan Ruo said, his hand resting soothingly on her forehead. The warm glow of the setting sun streamed through the open bamboo window, casting a soft light on his jade-like face, making him appear exceptionally gentle. For a moment, Bai Xiao Tu was entranced; this unreliable master actually had quite a handsome appearance!
“I’m used to it,” Bai Xiao Tu replied with a silly grin.
“Bai Xiao Tu, is that ruby really so important?” Lan Ruo inquired.
Bai Xiao Tu frowned for a brief moment but quickly responded, “Of course. The ruby is our Snow Rabbit Kingdom’s treasure. If a mortal possesses it, they can live for a hundred years; if a demon gets it, it can heal all wounds and break any seals placed by immortals.”
“It sounds amazing! Can I see it?” Lan Ruo asked with genuine interest.
Bai Xiao Tu hesitated for a moment before nodding. Just as Lan Ruo thought she was about to take out the ruby, she felt a sword pressed against her neck. “Bai Xiao Tu, what are you doing?”
“Stop pretending; you’re not that stinky monk.” The monk would never call her by her demon name or comfort her. From what she knew of monks, if he saw her wake up, he would probably regretfully shrug and say he was about to roast a rabbit if she didn’t wake up soon.
Yet no matter how much she tried to act calm, Bai Xiao Tu was still frightened at that moment.
“You’re quite clever,” Fake Lan Ruo said with a smirk. At that moment, dark light flickered as Fake Lan Ruo revealed his true identity—he was Hunting Wolf.
Seeing those wolf eyes glowing with green light made Bai Xiao Tu’s hand tremble around the sword. No matter how much she told herself not to be afraid, the instinct of a rabbit to fear wolves had already seeped into her very bones.
"Silly Princess, don't let your hands shake," Hunting Wolf said, watching her with an amused expression.
Bai Xiao Tu stared at Hunting Wolf with suspicion, only to see him suddenly transform into a wolf's face, his large jaws and sharp teeth just inches away from her. The ferocious wolf was the greatest fear of a rabbit, and in that moment, Bai Xiao Tu was so frightened that her sword fell to the ground. The wolf's face continued to shift—sometimes it was Lan Ruo, sometimes it was Hunting Wolf, and at other times it morphed into a toothy wolf visage.
Quickly picking up her sword, Bai Xiao Tu looked up again, but Hunting Wolf had vanished. The quiet bamboo house was left with only the sound of her heavy breathing.
At that moment, a noise came from the doorway. Bai Xiao Tu's vacant eyes turned towards it, the earlier scene of Lan Ruo transforming into Hunting Wolf replaying in her mind, finally freezing on Hunting Wolf's greedy and bloodthirsty gaze. So when she saw Lan Ruo enter, she instinctively stepped forward with her sword and pierced his abdomen while he was unprepared. "Don't think you can deceive me again," she said in a daze.
Warm liquid flowed onto her hands as she heard Lan Ruo Monk's usual teasing tone: "Bai Xiao Tu, do you want me to eat you like rabbit meat?"
Bai Xiao Tu blinked, and suddenly there was a glimmer of light in her dazed eyes. Her rationality returned; the person before her was the real Lan Ruo! But… she had actually attacked him. Pulling out her sword, she felt tears welling up: "I… I didn't mean to."
"You silly rabbit," Lan Ruo complained, though a faint smile remained on his face as he quickly pressed on an acupoint to staunch the bleeding.
"Wasn't my trick of using a borrowed knife quite good?" Hunting Wolf emerged from behind a screen. He hadn't left the bamboo house since earlier. "However, I didn't expect you, Monk, to resolve hundreds of my subordinates so quickly and find your way here."
As Hunting Wolf advanced towards Lan Ruo, Bai Xiao Tu stepped in front of him with her bloodied sword raised, causing Hunting Wolf to raise an eyebrow in surprise. "You can't even protect yourself and yet you want to save this monk?"
"Shut up!" Bai Xiao Tu said anxiously but stubbornly.
Her small frame stood defiantly before him, her thin shoulders tense. Clearly terrified yet still determined to protect him—what a foolish rabbit she was. Lan Ruo thought to himself. Before he could even manage a smile, a flash of coldness crossed his dark eyes.
There was no time to delay any longer.
Suddenly, a strong gust of wind swept through, and Bai Xiao Tu turned around to see Lan Ruo holding a scripture with both hands, her eyes closed as she silently recited the verses. The words seemed to come alive, glowing and transforming into a web that swiftly enveloped Hunting Wolf.
The scripture completely covered Hunting Wolf; he was unable to resist, and before he could even struggle, his soul was scattered.
The bamboo house fell silent once more.
"If I don't show my true abilities, they might really think I'm harmless."
Lan Ruo closed the scripture. Bai Xiao Tu couldn't tell if it was just his imagination, but he thought he saw a fleeting coldness in the corner of her eyes.
However, before Bai Xiao Tu could delve deeper into his thoughts, Lan Ruo swayed and collapsed in front of him. In that moment, he felt an unprecedented sense of panic.
