"Are you planning to rely on someone to take care of you in your old age or to mourn for you? You’ll have to count on my son!" 0

My parents, both educated and university graduates, had never encountered such a shrew. They were so furious they couldn't even speak. 0

I was seething with anger! 0

You can insult me, but not my parents! 0

Since I had no intention of getting married anyway, I decided to act boldly and kicked her out! 0

"Damn you, old hag! If you die, I’ll definitely find someone to mourn for you!" 0

She plopped down on the ground, stunned for a moment before starting to wail loudly: 0

"Help! Help! My daughter-in-law is hitting her mother-in-law! Someone save me—" 0

Xu Chi rushed up, raising his hand: 0

"Lu Xinran, if you dare touch Mother—" 0

Before he could finish, my dad swung a broom and hit him on the back: 0

"Get lost! Or I’ll call the police and report you for creating a disturbance!" 0

Mother pulled out her phone as if to call 110. 0

Xu Chi panicked, fearing it would affect his job. 0

Usually gentle and refined, Mother couldn’t hold back anymore: 0

"Xu Chi, do you really think our family is easy to bully? There’s no need to say anything now; just pretend we’re blind and get your mother out of here!" 0

"Fine!" 0

"If we’re not getting married, then so be it. Lu Xinran, just wait! We’ll see how this plays out." 0

Xu Chi threw down a harsh remark and shot me a fierce look before turning away. 0

His mother still wanted to make a scene, but Xu Chi was afraid we would actually call the police and hurriedly helped her away. 0

That night, as I lay in bed, my mind was a chaotic mess. 0

I had given so much for Xu Chi. 0

However, one cannot keep compromising indefinitely, especially when repeatedly pushed to the limit. 0

During my four years in college, Xu Chi had a monthly allowance of 500, while mine was 5000. My parents believed that girls should be well taken care of and shouldn’t worry about money. Initially, Xu Chi's allowance was 1500, but it was later reduced to 500. He only mentioned that his family was not well-off, but I understood what his mother really meant. It was simply about being with me without spending my money, taking advantage of my family's resources. 0

Throughout those four years, all his clothes, shoes, our meals out, and even the times he treated his roommates were paid for by me. While 5000 a month sounds like a lot, it was hardly enough to support two people. At that age, I hadn’t even bought myself a decent set of cosmetics. 0

After graduation, Xu Chi said he was just starting his career and that his colleagues drove luxury cars, which made it easier for them to meet clients. His family could only afford a second-hand Honda Fit, so he asked me to think of a way to help him out. I knew that business success relied on ability, not on the car one drove. Yet because I loved him, I agreed to help. 0

I told my parents I wanted to buy a car, and they bought me a BMW worth over 500,000 for Xu Chi to drive while I squeezed onto the subway. Later, he mentioned that his mother worked hard in the fields and couldn’t afford a house. I went back to my parents again and convinced them to buy us a wedding home. Looking back now, I really want to slap myself! 0

My parents would have been better off raising a piece of char siu! 0

At first, Xu Chi treated me very well; he was particularly caring and would bring me cake in the middle of the night. Everyone said he was an extraordinary man. He wasn’t my type initially, but gradually I fell for him and developed feelings. And for the sake of those feelings, I kept making concessions. 0

When did he change? Was it my repeated concessions that made him more demanding, or did he feel he had me under control and revealed his true nature? 0

I didn't know. 0
I bit my lip and touched my small abdomen. 0
There was a tiny life growing inside me, but I couldn't keep it. 0
The next day, Mother accompanied me for the abortion. 0
As I lay on the operating table, my heart felt like it was pierced by a thousand arrows, the pain almost making it hard to breathe. 0
I had never expected this child, yet its arrival filled me with a strange feeling. 0
Passing by a baby store, I would imagine how those little clothes would look on it. 0
I hoped it would resemble me more, but also hoped it would be like Xu Chi. 0
I had dreamed of it, a tiny bundle calling Mother "Mom." 0
But now, I had to end its life with my own hands. 0
