I could wait from morning until dusk, and there was no sign of them. I guessed they wouldn’t easily return the car; they probably thought they could play tricks, believing I was just making a fuss and wouldn’t dare to take real action. 0

Since that was the case, I wouldn’t hold back any longer. Early the next morning, my friend and I headed straight to Xu Chi's house. My home was in the city center, while Xu Chi's place was in the suburbs, about a forty-minute drive away. 0

When we arrived at his building, I saw my BMW parked perfectly in its spot. Xu Chi had even put stickers on my car, truly treating it as if it were his own. I didn’t go upstairs; instead, I shouted at the top of my lungs from downstairs, “Xu Chi, get out here! Don’t you love bothering me? I’m here today to get my car back!” 0

There was a moment of silence inside before Xu Chi's mother came rushing down the stairs like a madwoman, yelling as she ran, “You little brat! How dare you come to my house? You’re asking for trouble!” 0

I was all too familiar with that voice; it made me feel sick. Neighbors peeked out to watch the commotion, their faces lit up with curiosity as if they were about to witness a spectacle. 0

An excited woman holding a shovel exclaimed, “Hey, isn’t that Old Xu Family’s daughter-in-law? Just a few days after the wedding, and she’s already clashing with her mother-in-law?” 0

Another elderly lady chimed in mysteriously, “They’re not even married yet! I heard she called off the wedding and even hit the child!” 0

“Oh dear, she must not be an easy one to deal with.” 0

“Exactly! You know what kind of person Xu Chi's mother is? She has a knack for tormenting her daughters-in-law!” 0

Listening to their back-and-forth chatter made it clear that Xu Chi's mother had been spreading rumors about me. If she liked to talk, then let her talk; everyone has their own voice. 0

I cleared my throat and said loudly, “Everyone, let’s be fair here. I’m not here to argue; I just want to get my car back.” 0

"We spent 500,000 on the car, and Xu Chi won't give it to me. What does that mean?" 0

An elderly woman upstairs asked, "Dear, why aren't you two getting married?" 0

I calmly replied, "On the day of the wedding, Xu Chi's mother asked me to return the 88,000 Bride Price and demanded a house from my family for her youngest son as a wedding gift." 0

"We don't have the money to support so many people, so we decided not to get married." 0

As soon as I finished speaking, everyone in the building gasped in shock. 0

The woman with the shovel couldn't stand to see Xu Chi's family doing well and quickly added, "Oh my, I've really learned something today. The daughter-in-law is providing a wedding house for her brother-in-law. Is she being a mother or a sister-in-law?" 0

Laughter erupted among the crowd. 0

Xu Chi's mother got angry and jumped up to scold her, "What are you saying? Why are you joining in? You old hag, just because you have a mouth!" 0

I had anticipated her reaction and turned to Xu Chi, asking, "Xu Chi, I'm just asking you, are you going to return the car or not?" 0

Xu Chi remained silent for a long time, but his mother was quick to respond: "Return your car? Why should we? That’s our car!" 0

"You made me lose my grandchild; this is emotional distress compensation! Get lost!" 0

The elderly woman spoke up again: "It's the first time I've seen a man ask a woman for emotional distress compensation. Your eldest son has become quite the delicate flower." 0

"Families with daughters need to be careful; don’t look for someone like that!" 0

I didn’t say much; the attitude of Xu Chi’s family was already clear. I took out my phone and called the police, briefly explaining the situation. Xu Chi's mother was relentless, acting as if she feared nothing: 0

“Call the police? Do you really think they’ll care about your petty issues?” 0

I nodded, thinking we would see if they would take action. Before long, a police car drove into the neighborhood and stopped in front of the building. Two officers, one male and one female, got out. 0

“Hello, did you call the police?” the female officer asked. 0

Before I could respond, Xu Chi's mother jumped in to complain: 0

“Officer, you have to help us! My daughter-in-law has called off the wedding and has even caused me to lose my grandchild! She’s making our lives miserable!” 0

Xu Chi also pointed a finger at me: 0

“Officer, she’s slandering me, which caused me to lose my job. That’s against the law!” 0

The two officers exchanged glances, frowning before turning to me: 0

“Who exactly called the police?” 0

I calmly recounted the entire story and presented the car purchase invoice and registration documents. 0

“I believe they are involved in property infringement, which is why I sought help from the police.” 0

The female officer listened with a hint of sympathy: 0

“It’s no trouble; it’s what we’re here for.” 0

She then turned to Xu Chi's mother and said: 0

“Auntie, this car belongs to her; you should return it.” 0

Upon hearing this, Xu Chi's mother exploded: 0

“Are you giving her benefits now? She slept with my son for years; that’s emotional distress!” 0
