The police were both amused and exasperated.
"Watch your words. What benefits are you talking about?"
"I can't explain it clearly. You all should go back to the station."
Xu Chi's mother began to throw a tantrum.
"The police are hitting people!"
Xu Chi stepped forward, pushing the female officer.
"What are you doing? Be careful or I'll expose you!"
The female officer's expression darkened.
"This is your first warning; this is assaulting an officer!"
Xu Chi's mother became even more agitated, rolling on the ground.
"The police are hitting people! The police are killing people!"
I was utterly speechless at this family. The police, tired of the nonsense, issued a direct warning:
"Third warning! Handcuffing and taking you away!"
A male officer quickly subdued Xu Chi's mother and placed her in handcuffs.
Everyone was stunned, no one cared about the car anymore; they were all focused on Xu Chi and his mother being taken to the police car.
Xu Chi's mother continued to wail, but it was clear she was now frightened.
"What’s going on? Why are you bullying ordinary citizens?"
The police ignored her and started the patrol car, turning to me and saying:
"Miss, you'll need to come with us to make a statement. The car is full, so you can drive behind us."
I hadn't expected things to unfold this way, but I nodded and followed the police car.
When we arrived at the station, Xu Chi's family finally seemed scared and admitted their mistakes, claiming they didn't understand the law.
However, when it came to the car, his mother still refused to return it, insisting it was compensation for lost youth.
I called my parents and a lawyer, and we filed a case for intentional property appropriation.
At first, Xu Chi's Mother was defiant, thinking it was a family matter. But when she heard the police mention a possible sentence of over two years, she panicked and cried to my parents, "We'll return the car to you, please don't sue us." My father scoffed, "It's too late."
Xu Chi's Mother disdainfully pushed her away, saying, "Of course! That's our car. If your son wants my daughter to spend time in jail, he should go in first!"
Two months later, Xu Chi's sentence was announced: three years and six months. His life was effectively ruined; he was finished. Xu Chi's Mother was detained for assaulting a police officer, and after being released, she accompanied her son to court. When she heard the verdict, she fainted on the spot.
Upon waking, she began to curse our family with all sorts of harsh words, her eyes filled with rage as if she wanted to devour me. I coldly smiled as I watched her being dragged out of the courtroom by the bailiffs. Their family was completely finished.
Xu Chi lost his job and went to prison. His younger brother, lacking a home, saw his marriage plans fall apart. Xu Chi's Mother lost her job too and could only stay at home, her reputation in tatters. By the time Xu Chi got out, their family would be crammed into that tiny apartment for the rest of their lives.
As I stepped out of the courthouse, I looked up at the sky and sighed softly. I had never intended for things to escalate this far. All I wanted was to spend my life with someone I loved and have a child of our own. I didn't want to scheme against others, but I would never allow anyone to scheme against me either. On the surface, I had won this battle, but it came at a cost.
The greatest gain was seeing through the true nature of that scumbag, preventing myself from falling into a pit. Sometimes I think, perhaps it was Old Heaven looking out for me. If we had actually gotten married, things would not have been so simple.
Noticing my gloomy mood, my father patted my shoulder and comforted me, saying, "We, Xinran, are blessed. You'll definitely find someone better in the future." My mother also held my hand and added, "That's right! I'll introduce you to a few more; they're all good kids."
Seeing their concern, the clouds of sorrow in my heart slowly dissipated. I still have my loving family and countless possibilities ahead of me. Those who once hurt me will only spend their time in prison. What could be better than this?
"Alright," I said with a smile, "introduce me to ten!"
