Ma Yuan turned to Wang Chao and asked, "Dad, you wouldn't agree, would you?"
Wang Chao beamed with a smile, "Good son, go get me a pen."
His son was taken aback.
Wang Chao patted his shoulder and said, "Your mother's temper is something else; I can’t stand it either."
Suddenly, his son asked, "What about me? If you two get divorced, what will happen to me?"
Wang Chao reassured him with another pat on the shoulder, "As long as you want to stay with me, I’ll walk away with nothing."
Tears welled up in his son's eyes as he looked at Wang Chao with gratitude. "No, I’ll tell the judge that I only want to be with you."
The two embraced again, and Wang Chao wore a proud expression.
I wasn't surprised at all. In my past life, my son hated me—not only because of my controlling nature but also because of his father's death.
A month before the college entrance examination, Wang Chao drove against traffic and crashed into a large truck. The car caught fire, and he was still alive when he was rushed to the hospital.
But living was worse than dying; he suffered severe burns and organ damage. I signed the consent to withdraw treatment without telling my son until after the exams were over.
He broke down, hating me for keeping it from him, for causing his father's death, for prioritizing his studies over everything else.
So later, when I fell ill with a terminal disease, he said I deserved it. And perhaps I did. After all, who told me to give birth to such a monster?
After watching this display of fatherly affection for so long, I couldn't help but interject: "Hold on a moment; let me say a few words."
"This house is mine; when we got married, your family had nothing to offer."
"Second, who said I wanted custody? You wish!"
Wang Chao felt a rush of excitement, as if he had just won five million. His son had always been exceptional, consistently ranking first in exams across the city. Anyone could tell he was a prodigy, completely different from Wang Chao's illegitimate child.
In my previous life, I never told my son about Wang Chao's accident or his shortcomings. When Wang Chao was hospitalized, a woman came to see me with a child in tow. She knelt down and begged me, claiming that this was Wang Chao's son and that she wanted a share of his fortune.
During that time, I was suffering deeply, but no one knew. I thought Wang Chao wanted a divorce due to educational issues. To prevent my son from growing up in a single-parent household, I kept delaying the divorce. Little did I know that Wang Chao had already hidden a mistress away in a golden house.
Such a disgusting person was seen as a good father in my son's eyes. If he wanted to be with his dad, so be it. I would let him chase after his freedom and happiness. I couldn't wait for the moment he discovered that his father already had a new wife and a new son; I wondered what his expression would be then.
Wang Chao spent the entire weekend with our son. It wasn't until our son remembered his homework that he hurried back home. When he knocked on my door, I was still writing my paper.
He angrily asked, "Why didn't you make dinner?"
I retorted, "Didn't you eat out?"
Wang Chao loved taking our son out to restaurants. I used to oppose it, but now I let them be. This week, I hadn't called or cooked.
"I need to come back to do my homework," our son said, looking at me expectantly for dinner.
I sat still, saying, "The food is in the fridge; heat it yourself."
"You said doing housework would take time away from studying."
"It's already been two days; what's another moment?"
My son's expression darkened.
"Just because you got divorced, does that mean I'm no longer your son?"
"You are my son, but you need to take care of your own responsibilities."
"Besides, weren't you the one who hated me doing everything for you?"
He looked incredulous.
"I hate that you only let me study, but I don't mind you cooking."
I realized what he wanted: support for what he wanted to do, and for me to take care of what he didn't want to do.
I smiled and said nothing.
He shouted, "You're getting old; why should I take care of you!"
With that, he slammed the door and left.
I began the process of divorce with Wang Chao.
My son tried to bring it up several times but fell silent each time.
He still had to stay with me before the college entrance exam.
He completely shut me out, coming home and closing the door without a word.
I didn't care; after all, I didn't have to manage him anymore.
I started to reflect: did I control him too much in the past?
If I hadn't pushed him to study, would he have fallen behind?
But what happened next changed my perspective.
