I had never told her about my relationship with Fang Hao. However, before things went south, I did mention Fang Hao. I had known him longer than her; we grew up together. After the college entrance examination, he went abroad, and I met Qin Danni during our freshman year in the same dormitory.
Fang Hao often sent me packages and occasionally video-called me. But during my relationship, he would always disappear. Qin Danni would often catch me receiving packages or on the phone. Under her persistent questioning, I revealed my connection with Fang Hao. She insisted that I show her photos of him and demanded that I introduce him to her when he returned home so they could drink together.
There was no way I would let Fang Hao get close to her, so I refused her for the first time. When Fang Hao finally returned to the country, we were both single and met up for meals together. He confessed his feelings for me, explaining that his previous disappearances were to maintain distance and avoid putting me in a difficult position. We talked a lot, including about Qin Danni.
Not long ago, Fang Hao picked me up from work, and Qin Danni saw us. With her remarkable memory, she greeted us warmly and inquired about our relationship. Later on, she privately "kindly" warned me: "Let me test your boyfriend for you. Those who study abroad can be quite fickle; if he's honest, you can rest easy."
That same day, I told Fang Hao about her "fishing test." As an outsider, he had a clearer perspective than I did. The idea of testing was actually his. I worried it might be unethical, but Fang Hao said:
"If she didn't have that thought, she wouldn't have taken the bait; it has nothing to do with you." Fang Hao's words eased my mind.
Following his advice, Qin Danni indeed took the bait. She didn't suspect the account was fake because it belonged to Fang Hao. He gave me the password so I could see Qin Danni's true self. But Fang Hao had a bit of a mischievous side. His account was logged in on both his phone and computer. I used my phone while he used his computer. We could both see Qin Danni's messages.
He quickly replied before I could: "I remember."
As soon as those three words were sent, I saw Qin Danni's face light up with joy next door.
"Dear Qin Danni: I haven't even introduced myself yet; you must have peeked at my Moments, haha."
"I did."
"You’re the one who wanted to hitch a ride that day but didn’t get the chance."
All the bamboo shoots on the mountain were snatched up by Fang Hao.
Qin Danni was exceptional at managing her emotions. Even when Fang Hao teased her, she didn’t get upset.
"Dear Qin Danni: You’re quite straightforward, but that’s okay; everyone says I’m like a man and won’t hold grudges."
"Dear Qin Danni: But don’t joke like that with Qian Qian."
"Dear Qin Danni: That girl Qian Qian is sincere and might take it seriously."
I couldn't help but roll my eyes internally. Was she trying to say I was petty while also praising herself for being generous?
Curious, I typed in the chat box: "What do you mean?"
I hit send.
To my surprise, Fang Hao sent me a private message at that moment.
It seemed he had anticipated what Qin Danni would say.
Before Qin Danni could reply, Fang Hao messaged me directly:
"A dog can't spit out ivory."
Fang Hao had always been a bit of a spoiled brat, with a sharp tongue and a penchant for teasing me.
However, despite his carefree demeanor, he was quite perceptive.
Just as he predicted, Qin Danni indeed had nothing good to say.
"Dear Qin Danni: Sigh, I'm straightforward and sincere, while Qian Qian is just the opposite."
"Dear Qin Danni: I used to have a better relationship with Qian Qian, but she's sensitive and suspicious, always overthinking things, which is why we've grown distant."
"Dear Qin Danni: Girls can be quite complicated; it's much easier to get along with boys without all the twists and turns."
"Dear Qin Danni: So please don't tell Qian Qian that I added you as a friend; otherwise, she'll start overthinking again."
"Dear Qin Danni: I added you just for Qian Qian's sake, so please don't let what we've talked about cause any trouble between you and her."
