His face was pale as he tightly grasped my sleeve.
“Miao Miao, we really didn’t do anything.”
I nodded. “Yeah, you didn’t do anything. You played games together, binge-watched shows, and walked my dog. Even when she was mocking me, you fell asleep on the couch while she stole a kiss from you, and you didn’t push her away.”
“Miao Miao, we’re getting married.”
“Luo Ye, we’re not getting married anymore. I wanted to play dumb, but the truth is right in front of us. Ding Yuanyuan is indeed more likable than I am; everyone likes her. I can’t keep pretending. She sent you so many selfies; even though you didn’t reply, you were moved, weren’t you?”
As I turned to leave, Luo Ye hugged me tightly. “Miao Miao, I’ll go home with you. Our seven years of love…”
Just then, Ding Yuanyuan’s face appeared at the window. She slammed into the wall, blood streaming down her face as she glared at me.
“Su Miao, why do you have to compete with me for everything?”
Luo Ye released me, his gaze evasive as he began to turn and go inside.
I knew that our seven years of love had come to an end. My mother’s scolding echoed in my ears again; the harshest words could be used to berate me, the intruder.
My brother pinned me against the wall and said fiercely, “Su Miao, can’t you be more sensible? Do you have to make the whole family chaotic?”
I replied to my brother, “Don’t worry, Luo Ye is yours now.”
Luo Ye didn’t chase after me as I drove home in a daze.
I packed my belongings and left the home I had lived in for seven years with my dog.
It’s laughable; after seven years, all I had were a few boxes.
I was going to find Yu Cheng; she was herding sheep on the grasslands and was my best friend. When I called her, she was tending to the sheep.
"Yu Cheng, I'm here to see you. I've always wanted to visit the grasslands."
"What's wrong, Su Miao?"
"Nothing, I'm already on my way."
As I sped along, when Yu Cheng picked me up at the service station, she gave me a big hug.
"Su Miao, how did you get so thin?"
I spoke the truth, "Yu Cheng, I might be dying."
Her eyes widened in shock. "Don't say that, it's bad luck."
I held her close. "Bone cancer, late stage. Not much time left."
Yu Cheng went wild, insisting on taking me to the hospital. "I'll drive you for treatment."
I shook my head. "Yu Cheng, I'm tired. I want to see the grasslands, to see your sheep. I don't want to struggle anymore; I want to die beautifully."
I left my car at the service area and climbed into Yu Cheng's pickup truck.
Holding Qiu Qiu, I leaned back in the rear seat to rest.
When Luo Ye's call came in, I pulled out my SIM card and tossed it away.
Yu Cheng asked, "What about Luo Ye?"
"He doesn't deserve to know."
"And your mom and brother?"
"They haven't been my family for a long time."
The truck stopped in front of Yu Cheng's Mongolian yurt as dawn broke, the sun slowly rising and casting a faint light that pierced through the darkness.
Qiu Qiu saw the grasslands for the first time and excitedly ran and jumped around.
I thought that if I were to die, leaving Qiu Qiu on the grasslands would be a good choice.
Yu Cheng lit a cigarette, and as the smoke swirled away in the wind, her eyes turned red.
Finally, she stubbed out the cigarette. "Damn it, Su Miao, are you crazy?"
I was at a loss for words, but she pulled me into the Mongolian yurt, her back to me as she choked back tears.
"Su Miao, Luo Ye promised me he would take good care of you. Is this the result of his care?"
I carefully tugged at her sleeve. "Yu Cheng, can we not talk about him?"
As I lay beside Yu Cheng, she held my hand tightly.
Her hand had grown rough, yet it brought me a sense of comfort.
