Seeing Yu Cheng holding Qiu Qiu and crying bitterly, he still refused to believe it.
"Who is that?" Su Qiang asked.
Yu Cheng glared at him with hatred. "That is your own sister! It's too late to seek redemption now!"
Su Qiang was struck as if by lightning. "Impossible! How could she be my sister?"
He tried to rush into the flames, but was stopped by the Herdsmen. The sound of burning corpses made Yu Cheng's heart ache like a knife.
After the fire was extinguished, Yu Cheng carefully collected Su Miao's ashes into a box.
Su Qiang pleaded, "Give her back to me; I will take her home."
Ignoring him, Yu Cheng continued to handle the ashes with care. "Su Qiang, you don't deserve her."
On a clear day, Yu Cheng took a small handful of ashes and placed them in a glass vial, hanging it around his neck. "Miao Miao, we will never be apart again."
He drove to the places he had once taken Su Miao and scattered her ashes across the grassland.
Su Qiang followed closely behind.
As he watched the ashes disperse with the wind, he broke down and knelt before Yu Cheng. "Please, let me take her home."
Yu Cheng scoffed. "Home? You destroyed her home with your own hands. Ding Yuanyuan is your sister; Su Miao wanted nothing to do with you."
Su Qiang sat there in shock.
Yu Cheng continued, "Miao Miao said she wanted the grassland to be greener."
Suddenly, Su Qiang snatched a handful of ashes and fled.
Yu Cheng stood frozen, murmuring to himself, "Su Miao, they will get their comeuppance. In the next life, don't be family again."
In a side story, Su Qiang placed the ashes into a pink urn, gently caressing it. "Miao Miao, you loved pink the most. Brother will take you home." But he knew that Su Miao would never call him brother again.
He had always thought of Su Miao as the sensible little girl. When her favorite things were taken away, she didn't even cry. Eventually, he even began to think that perhaps those things weren't truly dear to her.
Ding Yuanyuan was sweet-tongued, capable of charming their mother with her antics. He understood the hardships and humility their mother endured. He grasped why she always said, "You must learn to be grateful."
At first, he felt sorry for Su Miao. But as she grew increasingly peculiar, he lost his patience. He thought it would be fine once she grew up. Yet, at some point, he found himself becoming just like their mother.
When Su Miao was accepted into a prestigious university, he bought her a laptop as a gift. Ding Yuanyuan asked, "Brother, is this a gift for me to go to college?" He nodded in response. Although he saw the disappointment in Su Miao's eyes, he still thought there would be more opportunities to give her gifts later.
When Su Miao succeeded in securing a spot for graduate school, he bought her an iPhone 12. Before he could hand it to her, Ding Yuanyuan discovered it first. "Brother, is this for me?" For the first time, he refused Ding Yuanyuan: "This is for Su Miao; she got into graduate school."
Ding Yuanyuan cried, "Brother doesn't love me anymore, he only loves Sister, right?"
He felt his heart soften. "Then I'll give her to you."
He clearly saw Su Miao behind the door, yet said nothing.
Thinking of this, Su Qiang felt he was inhumane. He had actually hit Su Miao for Ding Yuanyuan.
On the plane, tears streamed down his face. The passengers were all looking at him.
That rainy night, they had forced Su Miao to donate a kidney. How painful must it have been for her to give up her fiancé?
Su Qiang couldn't bear to think about it any longer. He closed his eyes and saw Su Miao's disappointed gaze. When she said, "Luo Ye is yours now," he didn't chase after her.
He thought he could make it up to her later. But he didn't know that once Su Miao left that day, there would be no later.
When Su Qiang returned home, his mother and Uncle Ding were still at the hospital with Ding Yuanyuan. He drove to the hospital and saw Luo Ye sitting outside the ward, repeatedly calling Su Miao's phone.
Su Qiang paused and said hoarsely, "Stop calling, Su Miao is gone."
Luo Ye froze. "What did you say?"
Su Qiang wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and replied, "Su Miao is dead."
Anger surged in Luo Ye's heart as he swung his fist and shouted, "What the hell are you talking about?"
Su Qiang didn't dodge; he took the punch squarely and spoke again, "Su Miao is dead."
