Luo Ye still wanted to take action when the hospital room door was suddenly pulled open.
His mother wore an unhappy expression. “Su Qiang, go find Su Miao. Where is she? Tell her to come back and apologize to Uncle Ding. She doesn’t need to pay back that money; we are family.”
Su Qiang looked at his mother, a surge of malice rising within him. If she knew that Su Miao was dead, would she collapse like he did? He coldly replied, “Su Miao isn’t coming back because she’s dead.”
His mother frowned. “Are you crazy? How can you curse your own sister?”
Luo Ye, standing nearby, panicked and hurriedly called Yu Cheng.
On the other end of the line, Yu Cheng said, “After Su Miao died, several names were filled in as beneficiaries for the insurance. I’ll be back in a few days to handle it.”
The call ended.
His mother still didn’t believe it. “Stop joking.”
Ding Yuanyuan piped up with a high-pitched voice, “Brother, are you and sister teaming up to scare mom?”
Su Qiang stared at her, his expression blank. “Yuan Yuan, you need to take care of yourself. You still have Su Miao’s kidney inside you; don’t forget that.”
Su Qiang had only come to inform their mother of Su Miao’s death.
Half-convinced, his mother followed him home. Upon seeing the pink urn, she murmured to herself, “Miao Miao has always been sensible and obedient; her health was good too. There were no issues during the check-up when she donated her kidney. It can’t be true; it can’t be true.”
Yu Cheng drove with Qiu Qiu back to the familiar city and entered Su Miao’s home. Her room was small and dim, partitioned off from the kitchen, while Ding Yuanyuan’s room faced south.
The room was adorned with a pink princess bed and white curtains, resembling a true princess's chamber. Yu Cheng's disdain for Su Miao's mother deepened. Su Miao's mother still refused to believe that her daughter was dead, until the insurance agent and Yu Cheng presented the will and death certificate, at which point she sat on the ground in shock. Her stepfather remained indifferent.
Luo Ye's eyes were red, and even Qiu Qiu didn't want to approach him. The insurance agent spoke slowly, "Ms. Su Miao purchased this insurance two years ago. The beneficiaries are her mother and brother, as well as Ms. Yu Cheng and Mr. Luo Ye. The insurance payout will be deposited into your accounts." Upon seeing the will, Su Miao's mother broke down in tears. The will made no mention of her or Su Qiang.
As Yu Cheng was leaving, Luo Ye requested to keep the will, to which Yu Cheng agreed. If it could make them endure heart-wrenching pain every day, it would not be in vain for Su Miao's suffering in life.
After everything was settled, Yu Cheng took Qiu Qiu back to the grasslands. While playing frisbee with Qiu Qiu, she suddenly remembered Su Miao squatting by the Mongolian yurt, repeatedly instructing Qiu Qiu not to look back. Unable to hold back any longer, she let out a heart-wrenching cry.
"Su Miao, you told us not to look back at you, not to remember you. But how can we forget you?"
It was said that after a period of mental disarray, Su Miao's mother eventually divorced Uncle Ding. Ding Yuanyuan felt no remorse for taking what belonged to Su Miao; in fact, before Su Miao's mother moved out, she proudly declared, "Dad married you just to take care of me."
"Now that your daughter is dead, you can take care of me wholeheartedly, my dear mother?"
Su Miao's mother finally realized that the daughter she had neglected all these years was not her biological child, but rather her stepdaughter whom she had cherished for twenty years. She couldn't bear to think about what she had done in her daughter's final moments.
Sleepless nights plagued her, and she aged rapidly, whispering each day, "Miao Miao, Miao Miao, come see your mother, okay? I'll buy you your favorite doll and decorate your princess room, alright?"
Meanwhile, Luo Ye had gone to the countryside to teach and was nowhere to be found.
Su Qiang became a doctor at a top-tier hospital, fixating on Ding Yuanyuan. Until one day, Ding Yuanyuan could no longer endure it: "You're not my brother, why do you keep staring at me?"
Su Qiang replied coldly, "Because inside you, there is a kidney from my sister."
But all these acts of atonement came too late. Too late.
