For a total of seven days off, I thought about him every day, frantically scrolling through social media, yet I saw no trace of him.
Having not posted on social media for over two years, one night I shared a video of fireworks. Many liked it, but he was the only one who didn’t. I called a friend to talk about what had been happening recently. As the saying goes, those involved are often confused while bystanders see clearly. I wanted her to help me analyze the situation. She concluded: either he likes you, or he’s a player.
It’s understandable to give colleagues a ride when it’s convenient, but specifically taking someone to the train station raises suspicions for anyone observing. “If—I'm saying if—he likes you, what would you do?” Her question was the reality I dreaded facing. If it were just a one-sided crush, would the regret be lessened?
A new year began. March was our most relaxed time; everyone chatted while working, and the conversation inevitably circled around relationships.
“Xiao Zhong, have you been dating recently?” Sister Chen asked while pouring water. I looked up and replied, “No.”
“Why aren’t you dating?” My mentor was shocked and said, “Don’t be like A Shan, it gets harder to find someone as you get older, especially for girls. You need to settle down before thirty.”
I thought to myself: Are girls doomed if they don’t find someone before thirty? How is that not gender discrimination? I casually responded, “Oh, it’s fine; I’m not in a hurry.”
“The golden age for girls is just a few years…” He kept rambling on, and I couldn’t be bothered to listen anymore. I turned to Luo Yuanshan, who was focused on his computer screen, seemingly busy with something.
I asked him, “Do you have any requirements for finding a partner?”
Luo Yuanshan turned to look at me and said, “No.”
“Having no standards is the highest standard,” I joked with a smile.
Sister Chen chimed in, “Exactly! He just has high expectations.”
He glanced at us, his hesitant expression made me laugh.
"Isn't anyone pursuing you?" I took the opportunity to ask a personal question.
He thought for a moment and replied, "We're all adults here; what does it matter if someone is pursuing or not?"
My mentor interjected, "Exactly, adults should be decisive. You still have a child's mindset."
I: ...
Sister Chen: "That's because Xiao Zhong still has hope for love, which is a good thing."
Sister Chen's marriage didn't seem very happy; she never mentioned her husband or children to others.
I heard they had made a mistake when they were young and ended up marrying because of an unexpected pregnancy, living separate lives afterward.
I nodded in agreement, "Exactly."
My mentor shook her head in disagreement with us. I didn't feel like arguing anymore; everyone has their own thoughts. It's best to respect and accept each other without needing to prove who's right or wrong.
After a while, the milk tea we ordered arrived, and I volunteered to go get it.
When I returned to the office with the drinks, I keenly sensed that something was off. A few girls were stifling their laughter while staring at me. That mischievous smile, combined with the girls' sixth sense, made me guess the reason.
Sure enough, when he came to collect his milk tea, everyone started teasing him.
"Come on!" "You should ask her!" The girls kept repeating these phrases.
I pretended not to know and smiled as I asked, "What are you talking about?"
Finally, they couldn't hold back anymore and chimed in, "We're making A Shan ask if you want to be his girlfriend."
I laughed lightly; although I had guessed it was something related, my face still turned red and continued to heat up.
I stole a glance at him; he remained silent.
Sister Chen laughed and said, "Stop teasing Xiao Zhong; she's blushing."
"Exactly, Xiao Zhong is so young; he definitely wouldn't be interested in A Shan. He's so dull, what’s good about him?"
They desperately tried to justify their jokes, analyzing all the impossible reasons with clarity.
I found myself feeling a bit hopeful, but more than that, I was afraid.
Since the beginning of this year, there had been rumors that Luo Yuanshan was going to be promoted, which only added to the strain in our already unequal relationship.
