As the workday was coming to an end, I suddenly received a call from Zhou Chenyu, saying he was waiting for me downstairs. Once the clock struck the hour, I hurriedly packed my things and went downstairs to get into his car.
"Why are you here?" I asked.
Zhou Chenyu glanced at me and started the engine. "Let's go eat first."
He took me to my favorite restaurant. I was already starving and didn’t care about maintaining my image; I dug in eagerly.
"Slow down," he said, pushing a glass of water toward me.
"I didn’t eat lunch, I'm about to starve to death," I replied after taking a sip of water. "What do you actually want to talk about?"
"Let’s discuss it after we eat."
Once we finished our meal, I wiped my mouth. Zhou Chenyu finally spoke up, "Cheng Yue, let’s get married."
Fortunately, I hadn’t taken a sip of water at that moment; otherwise, I would have choked.
"Married?"
"You wanted to find a father for your child, right? I can be that father."
Zhou Chenyu's gaze was serious. What on earth was going on?
He sighed, sounding somewhat frustrated. "I really don’t understand you. If you want to find a father for your child, why not choose me?"
"Huh?" What was happening?
"Did Li Xiang tell you that I wanted to be a father for your child, only for you to end up with him?"
"That bastard, is this his revenge?"
"Zhou Chenyu, Li Xiang is Yin Cheng's boyfriend. Even if they broke up, I would never go after him!"
"Then who do you want to find?"
"There has to be someone, right?"
Zhou Chenyu's voice grew serious. "Speak."
Here we go again.
I frowned. "Do you really have to talk to me like this?"
"What do you mean by that?"
Zhou Chenyu paused and then chuckled lightly.
"Am I treating you like a daughter? I know you care about that, but I don’t think I’m in the wrong."
"So you mean I'm wrong?"
His tone softened.
"There’s no right or wrong between people. Relationships require compromise, but you break up at the slightest inconvenience, and I don’t agree with that."
"You still think I'm wrong."
I grabbed my bag and stood up to leave.
Zhou Chenyu followed me out.
"Cheng Yue..."
I turned around sharply. "There’s no child! I’m not pregnant at all!"
Zhou Chenyu was taken aback.
"It’s Yin Cheng who’s pregnant. She’s afraid that Li Xiang will take the child from her, so she asked me to consult a lawyer." I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down. "You don’t need to worry about my child not having a father anymore, and stop pretending to be kind."
"Kindness?" Zhou Chenyu scoffed. "You think I'm just being kind?"
With that, Zhou Chenyu turned and walked away.
"Thump thump... thump thump..."
This is the sound of my heartbeat, growing louder.
It's not out of kindness; he still likes me.
I told Yin Cheng.
She asked, "What about you?"
"Me?" I lowered my head and thought for a moment, "I still like him too."
Yin Cheng clicked her tongue, "I knew it."
"But I hate how he treats me like a child; I can't stand it."
In front of him, I always feel like a clueless kid, which is so humiliating.
Yin Cheng looked at me for a while and suddenly asked, "Have you read 'Emma'?"
"What?"
"Go check it out. The male lead is quite similar to Zhou Chenyu.
But the female lead is really over the top; she always makes mistakes and thinks too highly of herself.
However, she grows up under the influence of the male lead, and in the end, they get married."
What does she mean by that?
"Are you saying I'm over the top and self-righteous?"
Yin Cheng nodded candidly, "A bit."
Zhou Chenyu hasn't contacted me anymore.
I found out from Li Xiang's grandson that he is on a business trip.
I hurriedly finished reading the book that Yin Cheng recommended.
The female protagonist in the book drove me crazy.
Am I like that too?
Then haven't they already grown tired of me long ago?
