Unexpectedly, the Hongqing Group is so close to the hospital, which means I can save money to buy food for Song Fei.
Song Pearl walked along the sidewalk, and at the corner, there were several food stalls. Seeing that the nearest steamed bun stall was steaming hot, she took out two coins and bought seven buns filled with celery and meat.
When she was studying in the countryside, Song Shiting would bring her meals whenever he finished selling fish early. Each time he brought food, there was always a string of fragrant fried buns.
Those halal fried buns are unique to Golden Mountain Township; she had never tasted anything like them elsewhere.
The filling was a mix of chopped green onions, ginger, and lamb. When wrapping them, he would simply use a chopstick to smear a little filling onto the risen dough skin, fold the edges together, and place them neatly into a flat pan.
A few minutes later, a delicious aroma filled the air. Lifting the lid revealed golden-brown fried buns sticking together in groups of two or three or even eight or ten, which were scooped out with a wooden spatula and placed on a plate or skewered with bamboo sticks.
The dough was soft and fluffy, and although the filling was not abundant, it was flavorful.
"Sis, these buns are really delicious! There's so much meat!" Song Fei exclaimed with his mouth full, continuously praising them. "Dad, you should have one too... Sis, you should eat as well..."
After taking a nap, Song Shiting felt much better than in the afternoon.
When Song Pearl arrived, neither he nor Song Fei had eaten yet because Song Fei wanted to wait for his sister to eat together.
A large cup of thin porridge was divided into two bowls; Song Pearl and Song Fei shared one bowl while Song Shiting drank another bowl himself and had one bun.
The steamed buns were as big as Song Fei's fist, with plenty of tasty filling. The three of them even had one left over.
After eating, Song Fei lay on another hospital bed whispering to Song Pearl.
"Sis, you should sleep on this bed tonight!"
The patient who occupied this bed moved out yesterday afternoon, so it was still empty now. This was convenient for the siblings to rest; Song Fei considered it his territory.
It was white, bright, and clean, with someone cleaning it regularly. He would be even happier if it remained just for him and his dad.
"Hey, did you know? The room next door is a VIP ward..." Song Fei said mysteriously.
"What? A VIP ward? How VIP is it?" Song Pearl responded, pretending to be curious to play along with her brother.
"There's only one patient, but there are two caregivers. And I saw that room; it's really nice! They have all kinds of delicious food!" Song Fei's eyes lit up. "How about I take you to take a look!"
With that, he grabbed Song Pearl's hand and headed outside.
Half-reclining on the hospital bed, Song Shiting watched his son and daughter whispering to each other with a gentle gaze.
"Oh, what's so interesting about a hospital room? I'm tired and want to sleep..." Song Pearl was not as curious as Song Fei. Besides, it felt inappropriate for them to sneak a peek at someone else's ward. Reluctantly, she was pulled by Song Fei to the door of the neighboring room.
"Aunt, have you eaten yet?"
Song Pearl didn't expect that instead of peeking, Song Fei would directly push open the door and walk in, looking quite familiar with the place.
"I'm just eating!" A middle-aged woman with beautiful almond-shaped eyes was sitting on the bed with a bowl of food. She had a round face, high nose bridge, and delicate skin. When she smiled, deep crow's feet appeared at the corners of her eyes.
She smiled at Song Fei and Song Pearl and said, "Make yourselves comfortable."
Song Pearl felt a bit awkward, but Song Fei sat down confidently.
Reluctantly, Song Pearl followed suit. No wonder this room was different; it only had one bed but also had a sofa, a coffee table, a TV, and even a bathroom. The coffee table was adorned with several fresh fruits that looked very tempting.
"Feel free to have some fruit!" The middle-aged woman cheerfully invited Song Fei and Song Pearl. "Actually, I just felt a bit dizzy; I didn't need to be hospitalized. But those two wouldn't agree and insisted I stay here. It's like I'm seriously ill."
After taking a few more bites, the middle-aged woman put down her bowl and spoke to Song Pearl.
"You must be Fei's sister! You look really good!"
Song Pearl felt a cold sweat break out as she listened to the conversation; it was the first time in her life that someone had told her she "looked really good." She smiled shyly.
"Fortunately, Fei came over to keep me company. What a good child," Middle-Aged Woman said with a smile, exuding grace and elegance. "You two can eat bananas... Yang, bring this plate of grapes for these siblings to eat."
The attendant standing nearby smiled and placed a plate of grapes in front of Song Pearl.
"Aunt, your son must be making a lot of money at work, right?" Song Fei said while munching on an apple, talking to Middle-Aged Woman. "My sister will start working next year too, and she can earn a lot of money as well. She could hire a caregiver for my dad just like your son..."
"Yes, that's right. But by then, your father's illness will have long been cured..." Middle-Aged Woman said with a kind smile. "If you can earn a lot of money from working, you need to study hard."
"I will definitely study hard; I just got delayed this time. But my sister will help me catch up on the missed classes. She's really smart; she's attending university in Provincial Capital..."
Hearing Song Fei boast about herself to others made Song Pearl feel her cheeks heat up slightly.
While Song Fei was chatting happily with Middle-Aged Woman, the door to the hospital room was pushed open, and a tall figure walked in, his cold and emotionless gaze landing on Song Pearl and her brother.
"You’re the brother I bumped into this afternoon!" Song Fei exclaimed, her round eyes fixed on the newcomer.
This was indeed the person who had been bumped into by Song Fei earlier! Seeing his extremely indifferent features reminded Song Pearl of Qing Wenyu, who had chased her out of Hongqing Group.
"Wen Yu, working overtime again today?" Middle-Aged Woman clarified Song Pearl's confusion.
"Yeah," Qing Wenyu replied naturally as he sat down beside Middle-Aged Woman. "Mom, is your head still dizzy?"
"There was nothing wrong to begin with; I just finished my injection and feel much better now."
With her son present, Song Pearl felt embarrassed to stay any longer and pulled Song Fei to take their leave.
She sensed that Qing Wenyu looked at her and Song Fei as if they were two beggars trying to mooch off others.
"Alright, you two come over to play when you have time." Qingmu warmly watched the siblings leave the room, but Qing Wenyu didn't even lift his head.
Song Pearl and Song Fei returned to Song Shiting's hospital room, where Song Shiting's IV drip was already set up and running.
Song Pearl suddenly felt that she and her brother were inadequate caregivers, unsure if Song Fei was here to take care of Song Shiting or if Song Shiting was taking care of them.
"Have you two finished your whispers?" Song Shiting asked with a smile, looking quite energetic while lying in bed.
A faint bitterness rose in Song Pearl's heart. Sons should be raised with modesty, while daughters should be raised with abundance. Although Song Shiting wasn't particularly wealthy, he spoiled both his son and daughter.
Even though her soul was that of an older fish, she often forgot her identity in this familial bond, thinking of herself as a happy daughter being cared for.
Like Song Fei, she had no idea what sorrow felt like and unconsciously relied on others. Just like now, both of them had forgotten that Song Shiting was still a patient.
"We're enough; we'll stay here with you," the siblings said together with giggles.
Song Fei leaned against Song Pearl while sitting on the caregiver's bed, happily kicking his legs back and forth.
