Song Pearl looked at the guidebook for a while. The knowledge mentioned in it was something she had basically encountered during her school days, which gave her some confidence.
Gao Xiaoxia returned with a work uniform that was quite baggy, and Song Pearl wore it just enough to cover her down jacket.
"Do we have all these Test Drugs?" Song Pearl asked Gao Xiaoxia.
Gao Xiaoxia took a look at the manual in Song Pearl's hand and said, "We have them all, but you can't mess around with them."
"I won't mess around; I'll just use a little bit," Song Pearl replied.
"Then I'll go with you to the Analysis Room. You have to show me everything you use," Gao Xiaoxia said as she led Song Pearl to the Analysis Room.
"Do you know how to use these?" Gao Xiaoxia asked, pointing disdainfully at the various Glass Instruments on the Testing Table.
"I've used all of these before; I'm very familiar with them," Song Pearl said.
"Then show me how to operate this one," Gao Xiaoxia pointed to a dirty Fat Belly Pipette.
"This one is a bit dirty; it needs to be cleaned before use," Song Pearl replied.
"What's dirty? We all use it like this," Gao Xiaoxia retorted unhappily.
With no choice, Song Pearl picked up an Ear Syringe from the rack and demonstrated a motion for her.
"That's acceptable," Gao Xiaoxia nodded reluctantly. "Just be careful with these; don't break anything."
"Okay, I won't break anything," Song Pearl quickly assured her and then asked, "Is this all the Glass Instruments you have? Aren't there any drugs?"
"They're downstairs," Gao Xiaoxia said as she lifted the curtain under the Testing Table, revealing items in the Laboratory Cabinet. Not only were there Experimental Reagents, but also experimental instruments.
"These are generally not needed by us, which is why we don't let you mess with them," Gao Xiaoxia said.
"I only need a few things," Song Pearl replied as she took the necessary medicines from the cabinet and pulled out several useful Glass Instruments.
First, she needed to clean these.
Song Pearl brought the dusty Glass Instruments to the faucet on the side of the Testing Table, rolled up her sleeves, and began washing.
"Don't you wash the bottles?" Song Pearl asked Gao Xiaoxia, who was standing nearby watching her.
"No need," Gao Xiaoxia replied. "What is washing bottles?"
Song Pearl was speechless. Aren't all the people from Hongqing Group high achievers? Why is this beauty at the Inspection Station so clueless? She didn't even know how she usually did things.
"It's that plastic white bottle with a long red spout on top," Song Pearl described.
"Oh, you can just use a plastic bottle; there are several here," Gao Xiaoxia said as she rummaged through a cabinet and tossed two to Song Pearl.
Song Pearl took them and rinsed them clean. When she tried to fill one of the bottles with distilled water, her hand brushed against a large beaker with a handle, and Gao Xiaoxia immediately snatched it away, saying, "You can't touch this; if it gets dirty, this is distilled water..."
Song Pearl released her grip and said, "Isn't it dirtier to leave it open like this?"
"How could that be? Generally, outsiders don't come in here," Gao Xiaoxia replied. "Even those who have been here before won't mess around."
From then on, whenever Song Pearl's hand touched anything previously placed on the Testing Table, Gao Xiaoxia would intervene, not allowing her to create a mess.
With no other options, Song Pearl noticed an empty experimental rack that only had two pieces of scrap metal on it. She cleared those away and placed her prepared items on that rack.
"Is this okay? It won't disturb your work," Song Pearl asked softly after she had finished organizing everything.
She felt that she was no longer on the company's territory, but rather on Gao Xiaoxia's turf.
"Okay, let's leave it at that," Gao Xiaoxia reluctantly nodded. "You are not allowed to touch my things."
"Understood."
Song Pearl's theoretical classes were not very good; she couldn't explain any of the principles of chemical reactions or physical effects clearly. However, when she was quiet, meticulous, and focused on her work, the surrounding environment could not disturb her. Therefore, her hands-on skills were strong; as long as there were experimental steps, she could follow them to produce perfect results.
Gao Xiaoxia grew tired of standing by and, after reminding Song Pearl once more, turned and left without monitoring her further.
Alone in the Analysis Room, Song Pearl compared the materials in her hands one by one to prepare the necessary reagents for her tests. It wasn't until she had finished preparing all the required solutions that she realized it was already completely dark outside.
"Song Pearl, why haven't you finished work yet?"
When night shift worker Wang Shuzhi arrived and saw all the lights on in the Inspection Station, he thought Gao Xiaoxia had forgotten to turn them off when she left. Upon entering the Analysis Room and seeing Song Pearl engrossed in her work, he stood by for a while without disturbing her.
Once Song Pearl straightened up after finishing her tasks, he finally spoke.
"I prepared the reagents for testing fertilizers so that we won't be caught off guard with the products," Song Pearl said.
"Very proactive; that's commendable. Newcomers should do this," Wang Shuzhi remarked, looking at this somewhat silly girl and unsure how to respond. Ultimately, he chose not to dampen her enthusiasm and praised Song Pearl a few times.
Song Pearl pressed her lips together and remained silent. She just wanted to finish what she needed to do and hadn't considered issues like overtime performance.
Wang Shuzhi took out a large bowl of noodles from what he had brought and offered it to Song Pearl. "They stop selling food after six-thirty. This is my late-night snack; I'm sharing some with you."
Song Pearl accepted it with a thank you.
"I noticed your operations were quite professional earlier. Did you study this?"
"Have you studied a bit? What are you studying?"
"I'm studying Mechanical Manufacturing, and I just came here this year," Wang Shuzhi said.
"This doesn't seem very busy; there isn't much going on... Do you take turns working night shifts?"
"I work the night shift, while Gao Xiaoxia only works the day shift. The power restrictions during the day limit production, so there isn't much to do."
"Gao Xiaoxia is quite timid!" Song Pearl remarked.
"Yeah, our Inspection Station is in the center of the factory, quite a distance from the office area and production workshop. She's just a girl, so she’s scared to work nights, which is why I’m the only one doing it," Wang Shuzhi explained with a smile. He suddenly thought of something else and added, "Our Analysis Room has an electric stove for boiling water. You should eat here and then head back to the dorm; it's dark now, so don't go to the pantry for water."
"It's fine; the lighting in the factory area is very bright. I even walked around the factory last night!" Song Pearl said nonchalantly, feeling that Wang Shuzhi was being overly cautious.
"You’re quite brave for a girl. When you walked around, did you see that row of old buildings sealed with tape?"
Wang Shuzhi seemed to catch on to Song Pearl's thoughts and asked with a smile.
"I didn't see it last night," Song Pearl lowered her gaze, recalling something from the afternoon. "I saw that row of buildings when I went to the Six Workshop this afternoon. Why are they sealed?"
"Listen," Wang Shuzhi paused, "Are you really that brave? Last time I told Gao Xiaoxia about it, I scared her so much she cried and hasn’t dared to work nights since. Because of that, I got called in by our supervisor and the Minister for a scolding; they said I was spreading rumors and inciting fear..."
"That’s okay; anyway, I've never been scared to the point of crying," Song Pearl thought for a moment and replied.
"Then let me tell you this: you can't let it get to you; forget what you hear as soon as possible." Wang Shuzhi looked around; outside the window, the streetlights cast a hazy glow.
"This used to be a factory; our Hongqing just acquired it this year. Most of the workers aren’t locals, so they don’t know that row of buildings used to be a female workers' dormitory. It’s said that after midnight every night, the female workers would crawl out of their dorms and scurry around on the rooftops like cats..."
Wang Shuzhi spoke in a low voice, expecting Song Pearl to turn pale and shiver in fear, begging him to stop. To his surprise, Song Pearl listened intently with her dark pearl-like eyes wide open.
"Is that all?" Song Pearl asked Wang Shuzhi, unable to understand.
"Aren't you scared?" Wang Shuzhi showed a regretful expression and continued, "Also, ever since our factory moved here, there have been safety incidents every month. The ones who get into trouble are usually the good-looking male workers. Many of them have female spirits... I've heard someone even saw one. Last time, a worker fell asleep at his post and when he opened his eyes, he saw a beautiful woman standing in front of him. But he wasn't good-looking, so the female spirit didn't take him..."
"That person must have been dreaming," Song Pearl said with a pout.
"Hey, you guessed it right! He was dreaming! When he opened his eyes, the duty supervisor was right in front of him ready to scold him! Haha..." Wang Shuzhi laughed when he saw that Song Pearl wasn't scared. "This is just a rumor; no one has seen anything. It's just to scare people. I didn't expect you to be so brave!"
Just as Song Pearl was about to respond, she suddenly heard the sound of a gong from outside.
"What happened?" she quickly asked.
Wang Shuzhi ran to the entrance of the Inspection Station to take a look outside, then turned back and pulled out an iron rod from behind the office door. He said to Song Pearl, "There's someone causing trouble at the entrance. The Gatekeeper is ringing the gong to gather people. I'm going to check it out..."
With that, he grabbed the rod and ran towards the factory entrance.
