After the morning meeting, Minister Liu stopped Song Pearl and pointed to a bag of fertilizer placed at the door, saying, "Take this back for testing and see what's inside."
Song Pearl approached and opened the bag. The contents were small, greenish-gray granules resembling cement. She grabbed a handful and was about to leave when Minister Liu, dissatisfied with her actions, said, "I told you to take it all back. Didn't you understand? This sampling method is wrong; you need to mix the entire bag thoroughly. Do you understand?"
"Got it," Song Pearl nodded.
The bag of fertilizer weighed one hundred pounds, and Song Pearl realized she couldn't lift it on her own.
If Wang Shuzhi were here, she could ask him for help, but he had been taken to the hospital last night. Although his gas poisoning wasn't severe, he still hadn't come out of the hospital.
Aside from Wang Shuzhi, she didn't have anyone else familiar to turn to. After scolding Song Pearl, Minister Liu returned to his office, leaving her standing next to the bag of fertilizer, staring at it.
"What are you daydreaming about?" Wan Jiang asked with a smile as he walked out of the company office.
"Minister Liu asked me to take this back for testing, but I can't lift it," Song Pearl replied, looking up at the sturdy Wan Jiang. "Could you help me carry it back?"
Wan Jiang grabbed a handful of the fertilizer and examined it in his palm. "These granules look good, just a bit dark. Our new product should be ready by noon; it will definitely look better than this."
He put the granules back into the bag, tied it up, and lifted it onto his shoulder as he headed toward the Inspection Station. "I'll take it back for you."
"Thank you so much!" Song Pearl quickly followed him.
Gao Xiaoxia approached with tools for making a bulletin board and saw Song Pearl following Wan Jiang empty-handed. She called out, "Hey, how can you make Director Wan carry the bag? Do you need help?"
After finishing her sentence, Gao Xiaoxia shoved her tools into Song Pearl's hands and ran over to Wan Jiang, genuinely intending to lend a hand.
Wan Jiang dodged aside and turned the bag of fertilizer toward Gao Xiaoxia. "Why don't you carry it?"
Gao Xiaoxia took two steps back and waved her hands with a laugh. "We can lift it together! I'm a girl; how could I lift something so heavy!"
"Can't help but still have a smart mouth!" Wan Jiang chuckled and continued walking. Song Pearl hurriedly returned the tools to Gao Xiaoxia and ran after Wan Jiang.
Gao Xiaoxia looked at their backs, one in front and one behind, and pouted unhappily.
Song Pearl poured out a bag of fertilizer at the door, sifted through it with her hands, and then piled it into a heap. She drew a cross on the large pile of fertilizer, dividing it into four portions. After discarding two of them, she began to separate the remaining portions until she had the amount she needed, then packed the rest back into the bag and placed it at the door.
She found the manual and started to follow the steps one by one.
With Gao Xiaoxia not around, no one was there to supervise her while she crushed the granules, and when it came time to weigh them in the flat room, no one was nagging in her ear. Everything went smoothly.
Despite this, after a whole morning, Song Pearl still hadn't produced any test data. As closing time approached, Minister Liu came over to check and asked, "Have you finished?"
"Not yet," Song Pearl replied as she wiped her wet hands on her work uniform.
"You shouldn't use your work uniform to wipe your hands. Didn't the teacher mention that?" Minister Liu's stern expression darkened further.
"I forgot."
After working hard all morning, Song Pearl was caught off guard by Minister Liu's sudden remark and didn't know where to put her hands, so she held them up in front of her chest.
"Such a fool," Minister Liu thought to himself, shaking his head secretly. There was nothing more he could say; since the results weren't ready yet, he could only wait. It wasn't urgent anyway.
"I heard that the two additives used by Six Workshop yesterday weren't very good. Did you manage to test them?"
"Additives?" Song Pearl paused for a moment and picked up the two plastic bags placed on the shelf. "Is this what you mean?"
Minister Liu nodded and took them from her.
"What do they contain?" he asked.
"They don't contain anything," Song Pearl replied.
"Hey, what kind of attitude is that?" Minister Liu's anger flared up, and his expression darkened.
"There's no need for testing, it's just dirt," Song Pearl said decisively. She had seen it many times; it was indeed dirt. What could be tested in dirt? Microorganisms couldn't be detected anyway.
She initially wanted to tell Minister Liu that she didn't know how to conduct the tests, but seeing Minister Liu pointing fingers and nitpicking, she figured she would just get criticized anyway, so she simply said there was no need for testing.
This girl was quite straightforward! Fortunately, she didn't plan to let her work for long. Minister Liu, too lazy to argue with her, took two bags of dirt and left.
Song Pearl sneezed several times in a row; she wasn't feeling well all morning and had a runny nose. It was probably because she had gotten cold last night. It seemed she needed to go to the infirmary to buy some medicine.
She took off her work uniform, closed the door of the Inspection Station, and headed to the infirmary. She didn't see the young man who usually brought food to Gao Xiaoxia today, and Gao Xiaoxia hadn't come either. Song Pearl felt a bit unaccustomed, as if it wasn't time to get off work yet.
Hong Xinran still hadn't taken off her large sunglasses. When she saw Song Pearl coming over, she quickly waved at her.
"I'm here to buy medicine," Song Pearl said, sneezing again and wiping her nose with her hand in embarrassment. Gao Xiaoxia handed her a few tissues from the table.
"How can you catch such a bad cold after just half a day?" Hong Xinran took off her sunglasses; her eyes had already reduced in swelling but were still slightly red around the edges.
"I fell asleep without covering myself with a blanket last night and went out in the cold in the middle of the night," Song Pearl said as she sat down on a bench against the wall.
"Should we check if you have a fever?" Hong Xinran offered Song Pearl a thermometer.
"It's not surprising that you caught a cold; that big guy over there on the IV looks like a bear and he caught one too—it's really strange," Hong Xinran leaned back in her chair and put her sunglasses back on.
"Hey, who looks like a bear?" The person on the IV heard Hong Xinran's comparison and shouted unhappily.
"You! You can't just take medicine; you need an IV too, and now you're delaying my meal—this is so unethical!" Hong Xinran turned her head towards the room.
"You're the one being unreasonable! Who wants to catch a cold?" The person replied disdainfully.
At this moment, Song Pearl recognized the voice belonged to Wan Jiang. This big guy had also caught a cold; no wonder Hong Xinran found it surprising. She also thought that someone with such an impressive physique shouldn't be getting sick.
Song Pearl didn't have a fever. Hong Xinran gave her several packets of medicine and advised her to take them after meals.
"Wait a moment, let me see if Director Wan is done. Let's go eat together."
Hong Xinran stood up from Song Pearl and walked towards the room. Just as she reached the door, a sudden scream made her rush in. She saw Wan Jiang leaning against the bed, pale-faced with purple lips, breathing rapidly. Large beads of sweat dripped from his forehead down his cheeks to his neck.
Song Pearl had just put the medicine into her pocket when she was startled by Hong Xinran's scream and quickly got up to check.
Hong Xinran had already pulled the needle out of Wan Jiang's arm, murmuring, "Could it be an allergic reaction? He had the experimental injection earlier without any issues. Please, let there be no problems!"
Song Pearl reached out to feel Wan Jiang's chest but quickly withdrew her hand. Hong Xinran, in a state of tension, did not notice.
Hong Xinran removed the blanket from behind Wan Jiang to lay him flat and patted his cheek. Seeing that his complexion had slightly improved and he was no longer convulsing, she let out a sigh of relief.
"Thank goodness, this person is too delicate; even a flu shot can cause an allergy. You scared me to death!" Hong Xinran said, patting her chest.
"It seems like he's okay now; his breathing is much steadier," Song Pearl said, one hand awkwardly hanging by her side.
"Yes, it looks like there's no problem now. If he can talk later, everything will be normal. I need to check if there's an issue with this medication; it really scared me..."
"Should I go buy some food and bring you something back?"
"Alright, that would be great..." Hong Xinran replied weakly.
Song Pearl left the infirmary and noticed there weren't many people queuing at the Helper's stall, so she walked over to ask what food was available.
"Big buns, one yuan each," the vendor, Half Spoon, said with a dark expression.
"I'll take five," Song Pearl said as she handed over a five-yuan meal ticket. Her left hand remained hanging by her side.
Half Spoon, still with a grim face, placed two buns in a plastic bag and handed them to Song Pearl before standing there silently staring ahead.
Song Pearl frowned and asked, "I gave you five yuan; why did you only give me two?"
"Last time you bought the ham sausage, you didn't pay." Half Spoon said nonchalantly.
"You..." Song Pearl stomped her foot. This person was truly unreasonable; last time he had clearly said not to pay, and now he was deducting from her meal ticket...
She had no choice but to pull out two yuan in tickets and hand them over. "Buy two more!"
When Song Pearl delivered two buns to Hong Xinran, Wan Jiang was already fine. He was talking to Hong Xinran about how he felt earlier, "It felt like a heavy stone was pressing on my chest, making it hard to breathe or speak..."
Hong Xinran diligently recorded Wan Jiang's words in her notebook, and Song Pearl left after putting down the buns.
During off-work hours, the factory area was bustling with people. Song Pearl stood at the intersection holding the buns, hesitating about which way to go. A voice came from her lowered left hand: "Do you think I can be easily caught by you? I did it on purpose... Originally, if I collected one more soul, I could come back to life, but now the deadline has passed. It's my misfortune to encounter you... I will use my last bit of strength to take away the life of the person who cares about you the most in this world, leaving you with lifelong regrets. Just wait, meddlesome fool!"
Upon hearing the voice, Song Pearl quickly clenched her left hand and raised it. The only thing she could see in her grasp was White Cat, which transformed into a wisp of mist and vanished without a trace.
