"This is my first transaction today, so please bear with me! Just lend me a little more, there's no rush!" The driver's tone softened somewhat, but he had no intention of accepting Song Pearl's bag as payment for the fare.
As Qing Wenyu stepped through the company entrance, he turned back to glance at Song Pearl once more and stopped to say something to the Gatekeeper on duty. The guard ran over and asked, "What's going on?"
In fact, he had already seen what was happening over here; it was just that Song Pearl was a stranger to them. Those who worked the gate preferred to avoid unnecessary trouble, so no one came over to intervene.
"Could you please lend me some money?" Song Pearl hurriedly said. "I work at this company; I'll pay you back this afternoon!"
A newcomer? The On-Duty Personnel sized up Song Pearl and helped her pay the fare.
The driver accepted the fare and drove away. Song Pearl smiled at the On-Duty Personnel who had helped her, saying, "Thank you, sir! I'll get the money for you this afternoon." Since her smile didn't seem to work, she didn't need to keep a serious expression anymore.
"Don't mention it, it's fine. You don't need to pay me back," the On-Duty Personnel replied with a beaming smile. "Hurry up and get to work!"
Song Pearl made sure to remember this person's appearance in case she needed to find him later that afternoon to repay him. "My name is Song Pearl; I'll pay you back this afternoon," she said again as she turned back.
"Go on, go on," the On-Duty Personnel waved his hand with a smile, signaling her to hurry off to work.
Another person nearby watched as the On-Duty Personnel approached and asked, "Why are you so happy? Is that your relative?"
"Did I smile?" The On-Duty Personnel touched his face. His superior had instructed that during working hours, they should maintain a serious demeanor and refrain from chatting casually with employees leaving the building.
Thinking of this, his expression immediately became solemn.
This building had many rooms; the Quality Department occupied an entire floor and was not difficult to find.
Song Pearl looked at the transparent glass walls and the spacious, comfortable office environment. Taking a deep breath, she knocked on the manager's office door.
"Come in."
Song Pearl pushed the door open and awkwardly held her bag as she said, "Hello, I'm Song Pearl, coming from Han Village Machinery Factory..."
The Quality Department Manager had just entered the office and hadn't even had time to sit down when he looked up at Song Pearl, who was dressed brightly and stylishly. He said, "Song Pearl? Just like a pearl—quite dazzling!"
What did that mean? Song Pearl didn't quite understand at first.
"Song Pearl, here's the situation," the Quality Department Manager said as he sat down and gestured for Song Pearl to take a seat across from him. "It seems no one has informed you yet, so let me explain! Due to departmental consolidation, the Quality Department doesn't need as many people anymore, while the Sales Department is short-staffed. Therefore, the Human Resources Department has arranged for you to be temporarily transferred to work in the Sales Department. When we have a need here again, you can come back. How does that sound?"
What else can I do?
Song Pearl sat cautiously on the edge of her chair, her expression slightly bitter. She felt abandoned without any prior knowledge. With a helpless nod, she asked, "Okay. Where is the Sales Department?"
"It's in the marketing building next door," the Quality Department Manager noticed the girl's disappointment but felt powerless. The department was overstaffed, and all the personnel transferred from Han Village had been assigned to the production line. A frail girl like Song Pearl might not be able to handle the production line, so it was still manageable for her to work as a clerk in the Sales Department.
The manager of the Sales Department was a woman in her thirties, wearing a light blue wool coat. Her hair was not very long and was tied back in a messy ponytail, with thick eyebrows and large eyes.
After listening to Song Pearl's self-introduction, the Sales Department Manager stared at her for two seconds and said, "You can go to the office and familiarize yourself with the environment. I'll have someone notify you if there's any work."
Song Pearl nodded and thanked her before stepping out; she had smiled very little lately.
One reason was that she worried her smile would affect others' perceptions, another was that she found her smile somewhat silly. A key reason was that in unfamiliar environments and among strangers, when she sensed their indifference and distance, she couldn't bring herself to smile—of course, this excluded situations where she had to play tricks on people.
Upon entering the large office of the Sales Department, Song Pearl saw a group of people gathered together discussing something. No one paid attention to her as she walked in.
Feeling awkward standing behind them, she waited for them to finish their discussion. Finally, a tall girl turned around and looked at her.
"Song Pearl, you're working in the Sales Department now?" The tall girl warmly embraced Song Pearl as if they were long-lost sisters and complimented her, "You look beautiful today!"
Song Pearl recognized her; it was Gao Xiaoxia.
Finally seeing a familiar face relaxed Song Pearl's expression. "Gao Xiaoxia, you're working here too!"
"Yes! What a coincidence! Wherever I go, you seem to follow!" Gao Xiaoxia joked.
The group dispersed; some greeted Song Pearl while others glanced at her with disdain as they walked past.
Song Pearl stood awkwardly. The desks were tightly packed together with people at each one. The only empty desk was isolated near the entrance next to a water dispenser, which felt somewhat out of place.
"Pearl, you can use this desk," Gao Xiaoxia said enthusiastically despite only being colleagues for a short time. She wiped down the desk by the entrance for Song Pearl.
Song Pearl tried to move her desk closer to the clustered desks in the middle, but Gao Xiaoxia quickly stopped her.
"They have an internal rule here that new people must sit by the entrance... I used to sit here too; you should stay here for now until another newcomer arrives," Gao Xiaoxia explained. "Every morning, you can boil water and clean up."
"Oh, I understand," Song Pearl said as she pressed her lips together. "Thank you."
Arranging her desk, Gao Xiaoxia guided Song Pearl on how to clock in. Song Pearl felt grateful; if it weren't for meeting Gao Xiaoxia, she might still be standing in the middle of the office!
"Pearl, you can dress casually from now on, no need to look too pretty. Did you see our manager? We're already young, and if we dress more stylishly than her and steal her thunder, how do you think your manager will treat you?"
"Oh... I understand." Song Pearl recalled the way the manager looked at her earlier; perhaps she really was jealous.
"I'm not criticizing your outfit today, just reminding you to pay attention in the future. Don't take it the wrong way; if she weren't an acquaintance, I wouldn't even mention this!" Gao Xiaoxia winked.
"Okay, so I can dress like you from now on?" Song Pearl asked as she looked Gao Xiaoxia up and down.
Gao Xiaoxia wore a fitted dress with a leopard-print sleeveless hooded fur coat over it.
Gao Xiaoxia's sincere expression changed slightly as she nodded, "Yes, of course."
Song Pearl reached up to touch her collar and suddenly laughed, saying, "It must be expensive; I don't think I can afford it!"
