Manager Gao walked out of the office holding a large box, and the employees of the Sales Department all stood up.
"Manager, are you really resigning?" Song Pearl asked first, dropping her usual reserve.
Manager Gao lifted her eyes, wearing a calm expression on her face, neither angry nor upset, with a warmth that was more pronounced than during her usual work hours.
Although she had retracted her sharpness, there was still a hint of resentment in her words. She smiled at the subordinates who had gathered around and said, "I cannot continue to work for a company that cannot protect its employees and for leaders who do not uphold their interests."
"I'm sorry, Manager, it's all my fault," Song Pearl stepped forward, wanting to take the box from Manager Gao.
Manager Gao smiled and thanked her, stepping aside without handing over the box. "You're too thin; this box would crush you." Although deep crow's feet appeared at the corners of her eyes when she smiled, she looked truly beautiful.
This was the first time in the few months that Song Pearl had worked in the Sales Department that her direct supervisor had shown her such a sincere smile.
After smiling, Manager Gao shook her head at Song Pearl, saying, "It's not because of you. Resigning is my own decision; don't feel too guilty."
"Sister, don't go! What will I do if you leave?" Gao Xiaoxia tugged at Manager Gao's sleeve, her eyes red.
"Just do your best. No one will always be there to support you. I believe you can all stand on your own," Manager Gao said before not lingering any longer. She smiled and said goodbye to everyone in the room as she walked forward, encountering Qing Wenyu, who had just returned at the staircase.
"What’s going on?" Qing Wenyu understood everything upon seeing the scene before him. He frowned and asked, "Manager Gao, you're just a recent graduate; you're still young. How can you act so impulsively? I just started my position not long ago; does this mean you don't support my work?"
"I'm sorry, Director, I've already placed my resignation letter on your desk," Manager Gao smiled slightly, neither denying nor confirming his words. "Trust me; after I leave, you'll find an even better assistant."
She is truly beautiful, exuding a mature and confident charm. If only I had that kind of determination, but I have signed a contract. I wonder if I would be penalized for breaching it? Leaving Hongqing to find another job would also be troublesome...
Song Pearl was pushed into a corner. She didn't know whether she should leave gracefully like Manager Gao or stay and wait for further instructions from above. With Manager Gao gone, who would notify her?
"Resignation applications need to be submitted three days in advance, and you can only leave one month after the company approves it," Qing Wenyu said. "Currently, there is no one more suitable for Manager Gao's position in the Sales Department. I will take responsibility for explaining this incident to the company and the clients. If Manager Gao leaves, it would be a significant loss for the company, so I ask Manager Gao to stay for now."
Qing Wenyu acknowledged Manager Gao's work and sincerely requested that she remain. In the end, Manager Gao returned to her office with her belongings.
"Song Pearl," Qing Wenyu said after resolving Manager Gao's issue, looking at Song Pearl who was standing inconspicuously, "You should not work in the Sales Department for now; go home and wait for further notice."
Just as Song Pearl was feeling happy about Manager Gao staying, Qing Wenyu announced her own situation. Colleagues around her cast sympathetic glances.
"Is the company going to fire me?" Song Pearl thought she should raise her chin like Manager Gao and act with dignity, but she still weakly asked.
Qing Wenyu pressed his thin lips together, his deep-set eyes revealing no emotion. "I will try my best to coordinate and reassure the clients; after all, this incident shouldn't have happened. You are directly responsible and can only be suspended for now. If the cooperating clients do not strongly demand it, you will not be dismissed."
"I understand, thank you, Director." Song Pearl lowered her eyelids, slumping her shoulders as she walked through the crowd down the stairs, feeling somewhat lost and helpless. She wished she could smile confidently like Manager Gao did, but she had not yet reached that level.
The outcome was expected; she could accept it, yet for some reason, her heart felt heavy. Perhaps she was destined not to be as carefree and indifferent as those she encountered. Although deep down her soul did not care about anything and could adapt to circumstances without concern for gains or losses.
The air was very quiet, only the sound of employees returning to their offices could be heard. Qing Wenyu stood in the hallway and suddenly felt a pang of sympathy upon seeing the disappointment on Song Pearl's face. Was this job really that important to her?
Hongqing's corporate culture should be quite good; why had Song Pearl lost the stubbornness and confidence she had when she first started working here six months ago? Aside from cleaning duties, she always seemed to hide inconspicuously on the sidelines in other tasks.
Although she is very serious and dedicated to her seemingly insignificant job, it seems she has always been on the edge of her work. Finding a suitable job is not easy; is her disappointment due to the fear of losing her job?
