Hong Xinran was surprised to see Song Pearl standing up from under the counter and asked, "What are you doing here? Didn't you get the notice to come to work yesterday afternoon?"
"Oh, I got back to the dorm late yesterday and missed the call," Song Pearl replied awkwardly. "I haven't gone to the company yet today because I had something to do."
"I see!" Hong Xinran said thoughtfully. "Then you must go to work tomorrow; there will be a surprise!" She winked.
"Did you talk to Director Qing? You don't have to help me!" Song Pearl pulled Hong Xinran to sit down beside her. "Actually, I was just thinking about resigning..."
"No need to think about that. Why resign? It's so hard to find a job now. I'm planning to go to work; look at my new clothes!" Hong Xinran stood up and twirled around, showing off her outfit to Song Pearl.
"Looks good, not like you at all," Song Pearl said.
"That's exactly the effect I wanted," Hong Xinran smiled confidently, her dimples deepening.
"What about your computer? Are you repairing it or what?" Wang Xingxing pointed at the laptop that Hong Xinran had thrown on the counter.
"I'm selling this one; do you take second-hand items?" Hong Xinran glanced at Wang Xingxing.
"Of course, I buy and sell everything," Wang Xingxing said as he picked up the laptop, opened it, and checked it. "The system crashed, but there's no major issue."
"Alright, this is my good friend; give a reasonable price," Song Pearl said to Wang Xingxing.
"Why are you selling a new machine this year?" Wang Xingxing looked at Hong Xinran. "Are you short on cash?"
"Does it concern you? Just give a price," Hong Xinran replied.
"Since you're a familiar face, I'll offer two thousand," Wang Xingxing set down the laptop and assumed an expert's demeanor.
Hong Xinran thought for a moment and agreed immediately, "Two thousand it is; give me the money."
Without hesitation, Wang Xingxing handed over two thousand yuan to Hong Xinran, who took the money and pulled Song Pearl out of the shop.
"Pearl, come back and hang out sometime!" Wang Xingxing waved goodbye as they walked away, his chubby round face beaming with joy.
"Where are we going?" Song Pearl asked.
"We're going to buy a phone," Hong Xinran said playfully with a smile. "I start work tomorrow, so I need everything new. I'm going to buy a phone; I've already found a brand I like—buy one get one free for one thousand nine hundred ninety-nine. The one that's free will be for you."
"I don't need a mobile phone," Song Pearl said, busy refusing.
"How can you not need one? It's embarrassing to go to work without a phone!"
In the mobile phone store, Hong Xinran received the designated brand of phone along with a free gift phone. After some persistent bargaining, she managed to get the salesperson to throw in a SIM card, memory card, and phone case. Finally, the two left the store loaded with their purchases and headed to Song Pearl's dormitory.
"This is for you." The two sat on the bed, and Hong Xinran tossed the new phone to Song Pearl while she fiddled with her gift.
"I can't accept this." Song Pearl shook her head and pushed the phone back to Hong Xinran. "This expensive item costs more than my monthly salary..."
"Who told you to give me money?" Hong Xinran said unhappily, looking dejected. "Aren't we good friends? I actually prefer this gift because it's exactly like the one I used a few years ago; I can collect it... If you don't want this one, just throw it away."
"Then I'll accept it for now. Thank you."
Seeing Hong Xinran suddenly look like she was about to cry, Song Pearl felt helpless towards her strong-willed yet emotional friend. This sensitive girl had a fragile heart beneath her tough exterior, and Song Pearl wasn't sure if accepting her phone was right or wrong.
Since she could go to work now, Song Pearl arrived at the office early as usual.
She noticed that during her absence, the office was tidy as ever; the floor remained spotless. Perhaps she really was an inconsequential person here, without any value.
Seeing her desk still sitting lonely near the entrance, she placed her bag on it and habitually turned on the water dispenser to heat water for tea for her colleagues.
"Hey, you're back at work!" A male colleague entered and saw Song Pearl but suddenly couldn't remember her name, laughing awkwardly.
"Good morning," Song Pearl nodded. She also didn't remember his name. Although she had been in this office for a while, apart from Gao Xiaoxia, she didn't have a deep impression of anyone else. Not knowing how to address others, she had learned a trick from a colleague: when she couldn't remember someone’s name or what to say, she would just nod and greet them. In this environment, people rarely smiled when greeting each other, so her expressionless face didn't seem strange.
"Song Pearl is back!" Manager Gao walked over with her hair styled high and smiled warmly upon seeing Song Pearl. "Come to my office in half an hour."
Every time Manager Gao smiled at her, it never led to anything good. How many times had Manager Gao smiled at her now? Song Pearl felt uneasy; she didn't know what task Manager Gao was going to assign her next.
Colleagues gradually arrived for work. In the past, the office would be bustling ten minutes before starting time; today it was particularly quiet. Even Gao Xiaoxia, who loved to chat, kept her head down and didn’t greet Song Pearl—perhaps because she had entered the office just a minute before starting time.
After work began, some colleagues focused on their tasks while others organized documents or reported to the manager's office. Half an hour later, Song Pearl went to Manager Gao's office.
"Song Pearl," Manager Gao lifted her gaze and looked at her with deep eyes. "I heard that President Jin has forgiven you so you can come back to work. Therefore, you still need to sign this unfinished contract."
Manager Gao pushed some documents across the desk toward her. "Your internship period is over; you won't have to run errands like serving tea or cleaning anymore. There will be a fixed workload each month that you need to complete. This is your first task after your internship—are you confident?"
Song Pearl furrowed her brows, feeling somewhat troubled and unsure of her capabilities.
"I don't know if I can do it," she said.
"This is President Jin's phone number," Manager Gao wrote a number on a piece of white paper. "He is still staying at the same hotel."
"Manager, that hotel won't let me in. I can't meet President Jin, and I'm afraid I won't be able to complete this task..."
"They won't let you in?" Manager Gao shot a disdainful look at Song Pearl. "That's impossible. Who would take it out on an employee like you? If they won't let you in, find another way. Just get the contract signed."
Song Pearl wanted to clarify the difficulty of the job. She felt that it wasn't President Jin who had a problem with her, but rather Manager Gao. Since the other party had already let bygones be bygones, Manager Gao could easily send someone else to negotiate the contract. Clinging onto her would only complicate matters.
A gentle knock sounded at the door, and it was pushed open.
The elegantly dressed Hong Xinran appeared at the doorway, her deep-set eyes sparkling with a smile. "Hello, Manager Gao, I'm here to report."
