"Are you going back home to farm?" Wang Xingxing listened to Song Pearl and jumped up, squatting on the stool with a surprised expression.
"Yes," Song Pearl pressed her lips together and reminded her, "You will scare away the customers like this!"
"It's fine, there aren't many customers in the new store," Wang Xingxing replied.
Even so, Wang Xingxing still put her feet down from the stool and sat back down.
"Have you thought about your dad? If you roll up your bedding and go home, how will he handle it? It's a wonder he won't be furious!" Wang Xingxing said in a tone that was both pained and educational.
"But you've always made your dad angry since you were little, and he's healthier than my dad!" Song Pearl retorted, realizing this was a point she had just figured out.
"Sister, that's not the same!" Wang Xingxing elongated her voice. "I've always made my dad angry; he's gotten used to it and developed immunity. But you've always been the diligent and obedient girl, the pride of the family. Your mom praises you every time she comes to my house. Not many people in the village know you, and those who don't are very few... If they find out that the only kid from our village who went to university ended up coming back to farm, won't they laugh at you?"
Song Pearl pressed her lips together, wanting to say something, but she hesitated. In that moment of silence, Wang Xingxing continued, "Also, seeing you as an example, which kid in our village would still want to study hard? Do you know why our village is poorer than others? It's because the kids don't like studying!"
Seeing that Wang Xingxing had stopped talking, Song Pearl finally managed to speak after gathering her courage. "So am I now the sinner of our village? Is it my fault if the kids don't study well?"
"Pretty much. You will definitely be the negative example! Their excuse for skipping school will become—'Song Pearl is still a college student, yet she still has to come back to farm and get tanned...'"
Wang Xingxing's eyes sparkled with excitement as she sneaked a glance at Song Pearl. Seeing her remain indifferent didn't surprise her.
Because she had always been like this; to put it nicely, she didn't show her emotions easily; to put it bluntly, she was slow to react and quite easy to fool.
It was somewhat strange that such a silly big sister became good friends with someone as smooth-tongued as herself.
"Do you want me to quit my job?" Song Pearl asked.
"Smart, I think you should just quit your job. Aren't you graduating in two months? You're still in your internship period; it would be better to resign and go back to school. By the time you get your diploma, you'll probably have a job lined up. Your dad has always hoped you could work in the Provincial Capital; that would be great!"
"But I don't like the city. I prefer the smell of land around me, the scent of fresh grass, and the green trees, along with all kinds of flowers whose names I can't even recall. I also enjoy going to the vegetable garden with a basket to pick snap beans, smelling the fragrant rapeseed flowers, and the scent of tomatoes..."
Wang Xingxing pouted, "What do you know? Can you even farm? You'd probably steal an unripe tomato..."
At this point, both of them burst into laughter.
In spring, the village children loved to play all over the mountains. Back then, there weren't many families growing tomatoes in the village, but the village chief's garden had two rows planted, and they grew round and big, looking particularly cute.
"This is so delicious!" Wang Xingxing stood by the vegetable patch licking her lips, looking around to make sure no one was watching. "I'm going to pick a couple for us to eat." With that, she bent down and entered the garden.
Song Pearl also crouched down and touched one of the green tomatoes closest to her before twisting it off.
"That one is bitter; it's not ripe yet!" Wang Xingxing popped her head up from the ground, holding two tomatoes that were about three-quarters ripe.
"Hey, whose kids are you? What are you doing in my garden?" The village chief approached with a hoe slung over his shoulder, shouting from a distance.
The two quickly took off running, while the village chief chased after them, yelling, "Did you steal my tomatoes?"
Song Pearl ran too fast and tripped over a clod of dirt, causing the tomato in her hand to roll into a nearby ditch and disappear. Seeing this, Wang Xingxing hurriedly tossed her two tomatoes into the ditch as well and sat down on the ground waiting for the village chief to catch up.
"You two little rascals! Did you steal something and run away?" After catching up with them and finding nothing amiss, the village chief glared at them before heading back.
That scared me to death! Song Pearl gasped for breath as she got up from the ground and said to Wang Xingxing, "We can never sneakily take things from others again!"
"How much can you grow when you go back? You could even trip while stealing a tomato..." Wang Xingxing continued to persuade Song Pearl, "If your goal is to farm at home, why go through the trouble and expense of going to school... You need to think it through."
"Don't be so pessimistic. It's an ecological garden, not just simple farming. The mountain people have their own considerations!" Song Pearl smiled slightly and pointed to the door. "Don't mind me; you have customers coming in."
"I need a headset."
"Boss, buy a sound system."
"Do you guys do surveillance installation?"
"How much for assembling a computer?"
Wang Xingxing suddenly became busy, while her cousin, who had been ignored, was busy fetching goods for the customers, barely having time to collect payments. Song Pearl stood by, smiling as she helped with collecting money and giving change. The customers were quite generous and didn't even haggle.
Wang Xingxing's shop had a full range of products, but since it had just opened, there weren't many customers at first. However, more and more people began to gather in the store.
Some people came just to see the crowd at the entrance and ended up buying items they were interested in on a whim.
As they left, they couldn't help but praise, "The selection here is really comprehensive!"
At first, Song Pearl wore a smile, but soon she had no time to smile. It was only when her arms started to ache from collecting payments that the number of customers gradually decreased.
"Quickly drink some water," Wang Xingxing handed Song Pearl a glass of water. "Being this busy feels so fulfilling! If we had this many customers every day, we would need to hire two more people!"
"As long as the product quality is up to standard, there will always be customers coming in," Song Pearl replied as she took the water.
"Not only is the product quality good, but the technology is also up to standard!" Wang Xingxing proudly pointed to the young man next to him who was introducing the models to customers. "This is my cousin; his technical skills are excellent, a graduate from a prestigious university with a degree in computer science!"
"Is it really surprising that graduates from prestigious universities work here?" Song Pearl sighed as she looked at the young university student.
"We're starting a business here, while you're going back home to farm. Is farming really considered work? Who in our village doesn't know how to farm? Do we really need to go to college for that?" Wang Xingxing put down his cup and prepared to launch into a lengthy explanation.
Song Pearl quickly interrupted, pretending to be angry, "If you keep trying to persuade me, I won't come here anymore! We're still good friends, right?"
Wang Xingxing's expression fell as he muttered, "Fine, good intentions turned into donkey liver and lungs!" He then smiled again and checked the time. "Thanks to you for helping today; let's eat here! We'll head back together tomorrow."
"Sure, anyway, I still need to go to Hongqing Headquarters this afternoon." Song Pearl sat down and waited for the meal while Wang Xingxing called for takeout.
"Today's income is pretty good; let’s go for KFC!" Wang Xingxing said while dialing.
"Pretty good income? How about giving me some of that bonus?"
Song Pearl turned around to see four young men swaggering in through the door. The leader, Curly-Haired Guy, rolled up his sleeves, revealing fiery tattoos on his arms.
