The car came to a stop, and Qing Wenyu glanced at the slow-to-realize Song Pearl, reminding her, "You can get out now."
Song Pearl looked up at the mountain road ahead, which was in disarray due to the villagers' interference. It was uncertain if Qing Wenyu would be safe going up alone. Since she had already promised Grandma Liu, it was better to see it through.
"No, I still need to discuss some work-related matters with you," Song Pearl said, remaining seated in the car. "I need to ask, are we still getting paid while at home?"
By the time she asked this question, Qing Wenyu had already exited the car, carrying a basket filled with vegetables on his head, using both hands to steady it as he walked forward.
"Hey," Song Pearl jumped out of the car and followed behind him. "You asked me to plant trees and transplant seedlings, but where is the work now?"
"You can only blame your villagers for not knowing what's good for them..." Qing Wenyu replied without looking back, striding ahead.
This mountain now belonged to Hongqing. At the beginning of spring this year, they invested in a batch of precious tree species. Due to the villagers' destruction, the survival rate of these saplings was less than one-fifth.
Currently, aside from some common plants, the mountain at this not-so-high elevation was overrun with weeds and rocky terrain, far from Qing Wenyu's plans.
Unexpectedly, the seemingly quiet Song Pearl turned out to be quite bothersome. Qing Wenyu quickened his pace, wanting to shake her off immediately. He had visited the Land Temple a year ago; it was easy to find and had already been renovated by a construction team after the New Year. He wondered how much it had improved.
As Qing Wenyu walked briskly on the soft grass, he suddenly felt something was off. His foot slipped, and he leaned backward, causing the basket on his head to be thrown behind him due to inertia.
Seeing that Qing Wenyu was unwilling to engage with her, Song Pearl wasn't too angry. Faced with the chaotic wasteland before them, anyone would feel downcast.
Was Hongqing Group really that incompetent? They couldn't even manage a single Ecological Aquaculture Farm job; she couldn't fathom how they had developed.
Song Pearl shook a bunch of foxtail grass she had picked along the way while admiring the scenery of the barren mountain.
Not far ahead was the Land Temple. Since Qing Wenyu was there to burn incense for his grandmother, he didn't need to go inside himself. This short distance shouldn't have any traps for catching weasels; what could happen to a tall and sturdy man like him?
She thought it might be a good idea to wander around the mountain for a bit and see if she could catch any wild chickens or rabbits. With that in mind, Song Pearl turned and walked in another direction.
Just then, a gust of wind rushed overhead, startling her. She instinctively reached out and caught a basket that landed firmly in her hands.
Looking at the basket she held, which was neatly arranged with food and drinks inside, she thought to herself:
I actually managed to catch this basket?
She set it down on the ground and examined her hands. For years they had been described as pig's paws; she never expected she could catch such a heavy basket!
She was staring blankly at her two hands when she suddenly heard a thud ahead and remembered that Qing Wenyu was missing. She quickly looked up and saw Qing Wenyu, who had been hoisted upside down, awkwardly landing on the ground.
"Impressive!" Song Pearl's eyes lit up. "How did you escape from the rope?"
Qing Wenyu sat up from the ground, hugged his legs, and glared at Song Pearl without responding.
Song Pearl knew it was pointless to ask further. She ran over to observe the circular rope trap hanging in mid-air and muttered to herself, "Strange, who would set a trap on the road? What if someone gets caught? Isn't that dangerous?"
Qing Wenyu stood up, brushed off the grass from his clothes, picked up the basket on the ground, and continued walking forward with the basket balanced on his head, using both hands to steady it as he passed by Song Pearl.
Looking at the swaying knot above his head, Song Pearl suddenly realized that this trap seemed newly made, possibly designed specifically to deal with Qing Wenyu! Did Grandma Liu know about this all along and sent her to protect Qing Wenyu? But how did Grandma Liu know she could help him?
There was no time to think further because Qing Wenyu had already reached the entrance of the Mountain God Temple. This proud guy walked quickly, seemingly unafraid of any danger, as if he didn't need her protection at all.
Since he was so confident, Song Pearl decided not to rush. She walked leisurely forward and noticed that Qing Wenyu was still standing there with the basket on his head, not moving, when she was ten steps away from the Land Temple's entrance.
Could he have guessed that the trap might have been specifically designed for him, making him hesitant to enter? Song Pearl couldn't help but smile silently.
Just as her smile faded, someone suddenly dashed out from the nearby woods, quickly opened the large door, and stepped inside.
There wasn't any danger after all; perhaps she had overthought it earlier.
As soon as this thought crossed her mind, she felt a gust of wind rushing toward her. No way!
She closed her eyes and reached out to catch it. Sure enough, her hands firmly grasped the basket again.
"Landlord Grandpa, you really have good fortune today! Twice encountering danger and yet this food remains unharmed!" Song Pearl took a deep breath and simply balanced the basket on her head.
Qing Wenyu straightened up; if he hadn't reacted quickly just now, the sandbag flying toward him would have hit him squarely in the face.
But that fragrant food in the basket... He turned around and saw slender Song Pearl running toward him with that large basket on her head, looking quite comical as she took tiny steps like a mole.
Qing Wenyu shook his head and smiled. This girl was truly earnest; despite being a bit muddled by her grandmother's instructions, she had accompanied him all the way to the Land Temple without being frightened by sudden danger at all.
Song Pearl hadn't expected the basket to be this heavy; it made her head ache. She hurried over and tossed the basket to Qing Wenyu. When she saw him smiling just inches away, she felt a bit dazed. That was a genuine smile; it didn't seem forced or superficial but came from the heart.
Qing Wenyu received the basket and put on that official smile again. "Thank you."
"You're welcome." Song Pearl's mind finally felt liberated, but it was still a bit dazed. "Hurry up and go in to offer incense!" She stepped inside first, only to hear a snap, followed by a sharp pain in her foot.
Song Pearl gasped and bent down, looking at the mouse trap that had caught her foot, cold sweat breaking out on her forehead.
"Who would set a trap for weasels here!" she gritted her teeth.
Is she still in the mood to think about this? Qing Wenyu's mouth twitched slightly. He kept quiet, one hand supporting the basket on his head while the other tried to help Song Pearl remove the trap from her foot. However, he had never seen such a thing before. Seeing her foot turning red and swollen made him hesitant to move too much. He had no choice but to put down the basket and use both hands to pry the trap apart.
"Are you even capable of this?" Song Pearl exclaimed, feeling a cramp from the pain. "Just press the mechanism on the edge; how long do you think it will take you to pry it open?"
"Don't rush, don't rush," Qing Wenyu said softly, cautiously pressing where Song Pearl indicated. The trap opened, and she pulled her foot out.
"What bad luck!" Song Pearl muttered as she sat on the threshold, annoyed. "You should hurry and burn incense; hope Landlord Grandpa blesses you so you can return safely after offering incense!"
"If it weren't for you being such a hindrance, I wouldn't have wasted so much time!" Qing Wenyu coldly replied as he tossed the mouse trap aside.
