Song Pearl lowered her head and gently rubbed the spot on her foot that had been pinched, relieved to confirm that her bones were fine.
Some people just tend to be narcissistic, self-righteous, and quite unreasonable. She never thought that Director Qing was any better than those people, so she directly ignored his words.
Qing Wenyu entered the Land Temple. The person who had rushed in before him had slipped away without him noticing, leaving some unknown incense ash scattered on the empty ground.
This temple would look more like a sacred place after some decoration.
Qing Wenyu placed the incense into the burner and lit it, poured an entire bottle of wine onto the ground, and dumped several plates of vegetarian dishes and buns from the basket onto the floor. After doing all this, he glanced around, collected the empty bowls and plates into the basket, and placed it in a corner of the room before clapping his hands and walking out feeling relaxed.
Sitting on the threshold was Song Pearl, who saw Qing Wenyu come out empty-handed and asked curiously, “Where are your basket and the dishes?”
“I gave them all to the Earth God,” Qing Wenyu raised an eyebrow and said, “This way, if we encounter danger on the way back, we can escape faster!”
“Is there still danger?” Song Pearl stood up with her hand on the door. “Did you do something wrong?”
“I didn’t do anything wrong; it’s your village people who are plotting something!” Qing Wenyu crossed his arms and looked at Song Pearl with disdain. “You shouldn’t have followed me here. But since you got hurt because of me, I will compensate you for your medical expenses.”
“Um, thank you. I’m very touched,” Song Pearl turned around and limped back on one foot.
Qing Wenyu watched Song Pearl’s stubborn figure and raised his hand as if to say something but ultimately said nothing. He walked a few steps ahead of her and led the way down the mountain.
“Cold-blooded animal,” Song Pearl glared at his retreating back, thinking that if it were Wang Xingxing, he wouldn’t leave her behind. Even if she didn’t speak up, Wang Xingxing would actively carry her.
However, apart from Song Shiting’s family, she had only encountered Wang Xingxing as a good person. In her world, apart from Wang Xingxing, there had never been any miracles where someone actively helped her.
Fortunately, Qing Wenyu wouldn’t walk too far before stopping to wait for a while, allowing Song Pearl to barely keep up.
After walking for a long time, Qing Wenyu stopped suddenly because he realized he seemed to be going in circles.
According to the time calculation, they should have reached the foot of the mountain by now.
All around them were green grass and trees; looking back, they couldn't see the Land Temple, looking ahead, they couldn't see the end of the road, looking up, they couldn't see the mountain peak, and looking down, they couldn't see the foot of the mountain...
Where is this place?
The originally clear sky had turned overcast without them noticing, and the glaring sun was obscured by thick clouds.
Qing Wenyu looked up at the grayish sky, feeling a bit lost. Turning back, he saw Song Pearl still limping toward him, which made him feel slightly reassured.
Although pain still occasionally shot through her feet, Song Pearl didn't feel too tired. She was somewhat puzzled; perhaps it was because she was walking with this somewhat annoying and arrogant Qing Wenyu that this descent felt particularly long.
In the past, it wouldn't take her this long to circle around this hill.
Song Pearl lowered her head to watch the path beneath her feet until her slightly leaning body bumped into a soft wall, causing her to stop.
"Ah!"
"Ah!"
They both exclaimed simultaneously.
"Why don't you look ahead when you walk?" Qing Wenyu patted his chest; he was a bit anxious from getting lost and startled when Song Pearl bumped into him, making his heart race.
"Why don't you look ahead? And why did you suddenly turn back?" Song Pearl bit her lip; she wasn't without temper, she just didn't want to stoop to the level of some ignorant people.
Qing Wenyu seemed to realize that he shouldn't be angry at an injured weak person. He picked a cleaner spot to sit down and pointed beside him. "You should sit down and rest for a bit."
"I'm not tired," Song Pearl shot a glance at Qing Wenyu. "It's about to rain; we need to get down the mountain quickly. I really don't understand how this short distance could take so long!"
When she glanced at Qing Wenyu, she happened to see a branch of a tree not far from him, just the right length and thickness to use as a walking stick, so she bent down and picked it up.
Qing Wenyu silently watched Song Pearl's actions. He did not expect this seemingly delicate girl to have such good stamina; despite her injured foot, she walked this much without showing any signs of fatigue. If he didn't know her well, he would almost think he had encountered a tree spirit in the mountains.
"What are you staring at me for?" Song Pearl sensed Qing Wenyu's gaze.
Since he was sitting down, he didn't have that lofty demeanor; instead, he seemed quite uneasy.
Isn't this person supposed to be confident? What kind of expression is that?
"Get up, let's go!" Song Pearl said as she leaned on the walking stick and moved forward.
"I might be lost. You grew up here, so you shouldn't be lost, right?" Qing Wenyu stood up and asked hesitantly.
"What? Lost?" Song Pearl turned back with a frown. "You got lost on this short route? How are we going to get back?"
"Don't you know the way?" Qing Wenyu asked hopefully as he looked at Song Pearl.
"I don't. Every time I go up the mountain, I get turned around. If I come alone, I can never find my way out."
"Then why did you follow me?" Qing Wenyu looked angrily at Song Pearl. "Didn't Grandma ask you to be my guide and protect me? Why are you following me if you don't know the way?"
"Really... unreasonable!" Song Pearl squinted her eyes and noticed a clean piece of blue stone a little further away, so she walked over and sat down.
"If you can't remember the way back, just wait here for someone from my family to come find you!"
"A local who can't even find their way home—what an eye-opener!" Qing Wenyu said with his head tilted.
"If you're lost yourself, don't blame others!"
"This has been tampered with, which is why I got lost," Qing Wenyu said quietly. "The grass here shows signs of being trampled, and the branch you picked up was just broken and thrown down not long ago... If you hadn't picked up that branch, I would have thought I encountered the legendary ghost wall!"
"Are there really ghosts in this world? Have you ever seen one?" Song Pearl said, examining the cane she had found, realizing it was indeed freshly broken.
Could it be that someone noticed her difficulty walking and specifically broke a branch to throw it here?
With no way to find the path and no common ground for conversation, both fell silent.
The air felt heavy, and suddenly a flash of light illuminated the dim mountain. Then came a loud rumble of thunder, followed by heavy raindrops pounding through the leaves above, instantly soaking their thin clothes.
"We shouldn't stay under the trees during a thunderstorm; let's move forward." After being drenched by the rain, Qing Wenyu finally calmed down and was no longer as aloof as before. He reached out to pull Song Pearl up.
With her clothes clinging to her body from the rain, Song Pearl felt somewhat uncomfortable. When Qing Wenyu suddenly grabbed her hand, she was startled and pulled back instinctively. She didn't expect her strength would send Qing Wenyu stumbling backward.
"Oh, I'm sorry!" Song Pearl wiped the rainwater off her face and turned to apologize, only to find no one behind her. Looking down at her feet, she froze in shock.
