Not far from her feet, there was a patch covered with grass mixed with branches, which had collapsed to reveal a deep pit.
Had someone set a trap here? If Qing Wenyu hadn't stopped just now, he would have fallen into the trap already.
Now, although it was a few minutes late, he still couldn't avoid it and had fallen down.
Song Pearl staggered forward, cautiously testing her injured foot until she stepped on a solid support point and leaned down to look.
"Hey, are you okay?" she shouted.
It was dark below, and she couldn't tell how deep it was, nor could she hear any sounds.
"Hey, is anyone there?" Song Pearl shouted again.
Could he have fainted? Song Pearl gripped the branches covering the edge of the pit with both hands and strained to look down, only hearing the sound of raindrops hitting the leaves.
Rainwater flowed into her eyes from her hair. Song Pearl raised her hand to wipe her face, but before her hand could touch her face, suddenly with a crack, everything slipped from her grasp and she fell down. At this moment, she couldn't care less about wiping her face; she closed her eyes and flailed her arms around in hopes of grabbing something to stop her fall.
Finally, she caught hold of a damp and somewhat smooth object. Although it wasn't very long, Song Pearl held onto this lifeline with both hands tightly.
She stretched out her leg to find a support point, but unfortunately, before she could find one, she cursed as her body fell heavily downward. The object she was holding also fell with her, but fortunately, at the bottom of the pit, her feet finally touched the ground.
Before she could steady herself, a tall dark figure came crashing toward her through the rain and wind. She stumbled back several steps until her body hit the wet earthen wall behind her and finally stopped.
The object that had crashed into her helped Song Pearl to stand up. She felt hands on her body moving from bottom to top in a disordered manner. She kicked forward with her leg, but since it was the injured foot she used, a sharp pain shot through her, causing her to hunch down.
Unfortunately, before she could fully crouch down, a hand grabbed her arm and pulled her up. "There's water down there; are you trying to kill yourself by squatting?"
"Ah..." Song Pearl gasped, "What were you doing touching me just now?"
"What were you doing pulling my hair?" Qing Wenyu's voice was laced with anger. "If you hadn't pulled me, I would have climbed up already!"
The pit was quite deep, with standing water at the bottom. It seemed it hadn't been dug recently, as branches and weeds covered the top. The rain wasn't very heavy here. Song Pearl opened her eyes and saw Qing Wenyu, covered in mud, standing in front of her like a mud person.
"Who dug this pit?"
Song Pearl looked up. "It can't be to trap you, right? If they trap you here, no one will come to drive the villagers away tomorrow."
"Being trapped here is fine; just don't bury me!" Qing Wenyu replied irritably.
As soon as he finished speaking, branches and weeds from the top of the pit suddenly fell down with a rustling sound, followed by a loud thud as a massive object landed behind the branches.
Qing Wenyu pulled Song Pearl close to the edge of the pit.
"It's over; I'm going to be buried here with you!" Song Pearl shouted in panic. "I haven't even gotten married yet; I can't die!"
"Such lofty ambitions!" Qing Wenyu mocked lightly. Once the noise from the pit subsided and nothing else fell from above, he cautiously walked over to check on the massive object that had just fallen.
With most of the obstacles at the top of the pit having fallen down, the light in the pit brightened a little.
"Pig!" Song Pearl exclaimed.
"It's a wild boar," Qing Wenyu replied.
Song Pearl shushed and felt delighted, "I've lived here for so many years and have never encountered a real wild boar! Are there wild boars on the mountains of Song Family Village? No wonder there are pits!"
"After the New Year, our company bought some wild boars to raise in these mountains, but in less than three months, there are hardly any left."
Qing Wenyu swung his fist and struck the wild boar on the head, knocking it out as it fell down, grunting.
"Why did you hit it?" Song Pearl looked at the wild boar with its head drooping to one side. "It’s so small; it shouldn’t attack people."
"What if it bites you? Then you wouldn't be saying that."
The rain continued to fall, and the water in the pit was accumulating more and more. Their legs were soaked in muddy water, and they could no longer feel any pain.
"I'll support you; let's see if you can climb up," Qing Wenyu said, glancing at Song Pearl's delicate figure.
"I might not be able to climb up," Song Pearl raised her head to look at the high edge of the pit, feeling uncertain.
"Can't climb up? You didn't think you'd throw me into the pit, did you?" Qing Wenyu softened his tone; women are often timid creatures, and at this moment, he could only coax and encourage her.
"Yes, I didn’t think about that," Song Pearl admitted, lowering her head in guilt.
Qing Wenyu overlapped his hands together, lifting Song Pearl's feet upward. Song Pearl grasped the wall of the pit; it was not easy to climb, and her hands couldn't find a place to hold onto.
She stood up straight and realized there was still a long way to the opening. She shouted down, "Lift me higher, I still can't reach!"
"I can't lift you any higher; you need to find a way to climb up," Qing Wenyu said, raising his hands high. As he lifted Song Pearl, he thought she felt too light. If she weren't a person, he could easily throw her out without any problem—what a pity.
"Help!" Song Pearl shouted up at the opening, feeling very comfortable as raindrops fell into the pit.
"It's raining; how could anyone be at the opening? Hurry up and climb!" Qing Wenyu ordered.
"I can't climb up!" Song Pearl struggled to grip the dirt on the wall with both hands, wishing for a vine to reach out to her.
Just then, as she was thinking about it, something slippery reached down from the top of the pit and touched her hand—it really was a vine!
Song Pearl quickly grabbed it and shouted down, "Someone is pulling me up! You grab my feet!"
Could it be that someone really came? Qing Wenyu didn't have time to think further and wrapped his arms around her legs.
The vine was fast and strong; although it was a bit slippery, Song Pearl's hands clung tightly to it. Soon, both of them were pulled to the top of the pit.
Qing Wenyu crawled aside and sat down but did not see who had just pulled them up.
"How did you get up here?"
"Of course someone pulled me!"
"Where are they?"
"I didn't see anyone."
"Today is really spooky!" Qing Wenyu cursed.
"Spooky? No way!"
Song Pearl closed her eyes. With Qing Wenyu around, she couldn't use any of her supernatural abilities; apart from Qing Wenyu's powerful aura, she felt no other presence.
"I think I just grabbed what felt like a snake's tail. Based on what you said, did we encounter a thousand-year-old snake spirit?" Song Pearl opened her eyes and looked at Qing Wenyu.
"A snake!" Qing Wenyu widened his eyes in terror and pointed behind Song Pearl. "Did you bring it up with you?"
