With Qing Wenyu's voice, a green mass brushed against Song Pearl's hair and lunged right in front of him, stopping about an inch from his nose. It opened its mouth and flicked out a bright red tongue. Qing Wenyu's pupils dilated in shock, and he tilted his head and fainted, while the snake's head quickly retreated.
Everything happened too fast; Song Pearl had just raised her head and only managed to see Qing Wenyu's startled and fainted expression.
"This big man actually got scared by a single sentence!" Although Song Pearl scoffed, she turned back in the direction of Qing Wenyu's finger and saw a grass-green long snake, as thick as a bowl, lying not far behind her, posing elegantly.
A snake? Song Pearl curled her lips into an unflattering smile. "A demon!"
"Wow, you recognized me at a glance? You have some conscience!" The demon exaggeratedly swayed its head, feeling pleased with itself as it explained, "I am not a thousand-year-old snake demon; I am just using this snake's body to help you out of the pit..."
"You have nothing to do with me," Song Pearl felt a strange sense of familiarity upon seeing the demon. Although this demon was the source of her troubles, if it weren't for it, she wouldn't be struggling so much as a human. "But thank you for pulling us up."
"No need to thank me; I was just worried about a man and woman being alone in a pit. What if something inappropriate happened?" The demon coiled its body comfortably several times, poking its head toward Song Pearl and flicking its tongue, its black eyes filled with mirth. It was indeed a beautiful snake. "I wouldn't want my master's future wife to develop feelings for someone else before marrying him!"
"Are you really a demon? Your thoughts are so complicated." Song Pearl reached out to touch the snake's head that was close at hand. "This snake is the queen of this mountain and older than I am. Since you've attached yourself to it, why not just be a snake? That way we can meet often!"
"That won't do; my task is to keep an eye on you until you find your master." The demon pulled its head back, afraid of being touched again by Song Pearl.
"Then where do you usually hide? Achoo! Achoo!" After finishing her question, Song Pearl sneezed twice in quick succession, suddenly feeling a chill sweep over her body.
The continuous raindrops turned into fine silver needles that fell like cow hair, as the dark clouds dispersed and the sky gradually brightened.
"Haha, don't ask what you shouldn't know!" The demon said gleefully. "See? You sneezed! I estimate that you and this person will have at least a high fever soon; better find a place to dry your clothes!"
"You idiot demon, have you ever heard that fish fear water?" Song Pearl shrank back slightly, sizing up the snake's body before pointing at Qing Wenyu. "You carry him and take me down the mountain!"
"Are you kidding?" The demon chuckled disdainfully and flicked its bright red tongue again. "There are traps for catching beasts all over this mountain; I don't want this innocent snake queen to die because of helping me!"
The demon clearly showed reluctance to help. Song Pearl puffed out her cheeks and watched as it slithered deeper into the grass. Finally, she took two quick steps and grabbed its slender tail.
"The queen won't get caught; she has abilities like mine to protect her kin from harm... If you don't want to help, then hurry up and get out of her body!"
"Ouch!" The demon pulled its slippery tail away from Song Pearl's grasp. "Don't do that! If you pull off the snake's tail, I won't know how to explain it. Remember: good borrowing leads to easy returns..."
It sensed Song Pearl's fiery gaze and finally put away its joking demeanor. "Alright, there are several traps dug here. You shouldn't go down the mountain yet; I can take you back to the Land Temple!"
The creature extended its tail towards the still unconscious Qing Wenyu, wrapping it around his face twice, causing him to exhale and wake up.
As soon as Qing Wenyu regained consciousness, Song Pearl felt the absence of the surrounding creatures' presence. She saw the snake slowly moving forward in the grass and quickly pulled Qing Wenyu. "Hurry, follow the snake."
Qing Wenyu was still not fully awake, but he immediately spotted the long snake moving ahead. Just as he was about to faint with his eyes closed, Song Pearl gave him a hard slap on the side and shouted, "That's not a venomous snake; don't faint!"
Startled by Song Pearl's commanding voice and feeling pain from her slap on his shoulder, Qing Wenyu managed to stay conscious. He glared at Song Pearl. "It's not about whether it's poisonous or not; I feel nauseous just seeing that thing. Do you understand?"
As soon as he finished speaking, the snake's tail lifted and swept toward his leg, prompting Qing Wenyu to jump back quickly.
"You're not fainting!" Song Pearl chuckled, gripping the muscle on Qing Wenyu's arm tightly to prevent him from passing out. "You mustn't feel nauseous around it; it might really be a thousand-year-old snake demon!"
The pain in Qing Wenyu's arm far outweighed his fear, and he managed not to faint.
"Alright, alright, I'm not fainting anymore; stop squeezing!" Qing Wenyu broke free from Song Pearl's grip and rubbed the spot where she had pinched him. "Indeed, a woman's heart is more poisonous than a snake!"
Song Pearl remained silent; after all, she wasn't a woman and wasn't poisonous.
"Why are we following this snake?" Qing Wenyu asked.
"Following you would work too," Song Pearl replied, stopping to look up at Qing Wenyu. This person seemed quite tired at his height.
"Forget it; I'll follow you after all; at least you're a local!" Qing Wenyu reluctantly compromised. Suddenly he asked, "Is your foot better?"
"It seems so," Song Pearl said as she looked down at her foot. Her soaked shoes were leaking water but no longer caused her pain.
"This mountain area isn't large but feels quite eerie!" Qing Wenyu murmured. This time he didn't walk ahead of Song Pearl, instead obediently following behind her. When he saw the Land Temple ahead, he shook his head; unsurprisingly, they had returned to their starting point.
Despite having rained, the Land Temple was quite dry.
The two of them spread out to find some dry twigs and branches, piling them together with the basket that Qing Wenyu had thrown down in the corner. Qing Wenyu casually picked up the match he had discarded earlier and started a fire.
"You shouldn't throw matches around like that; it's not safe. And what a waste of food," Song Pearl remarked, looking at the chaotic pile in the temple.
"These are for the Land God. If I don't throw them down, how can he eat?" Qing Wenyu sat by the fire, nonchalantly taking off his jacket to dry it, showing no awareness of the concept of ladies first.
"Is your usual behavior just an act?" Song Pearl muttered, feeling indifferent yet slightly annoyed.
"If you hadn't pinched me earlier, I would have been more polite to you!" Qing Wenyu replied without looking up, clearly displeased with Song Pearl.
Song Pearl felt a bit awkward wrapped in her damp clothes but was otherwise comfortable. However, for some reason, she couldn't stop sneezing.
"Local girl, go find some more dry twigs!" Qing Wenyu ordered Song Pearl, who was sneezing repeatedly.
The corners of the temple were already stripped of dry grass; if they wanted more, they would have to go outside to gather wet ones. Song Pearl walked to the door and looked outside. "It's going to rain again."
