Van's driving skills were excellent. Although Song Pearl was restless in the car, he remained completely unfazed, and the vehicle moved steadily forward.
As the car glided around a bend, Song Pearl felt a bit tense looking at the unfamiliar road ahead.
He might be a bad person, perhaps even an enemy from her past life! The reason she thought he was an enemy from her previous life was that she felt she hadn't offended anyone in this short life.
Maybe his urgency was to destroy evidence!
Song Pearl couldn't help but let her imagination run wild.
"Yao!" she subconsciously called out, a hint of desperation in her voice.
"What is it?" Yao replied lazily.
"I thought you were dead!" Song Pearl said, clearly displeased.
"Thanks to you, how could I die before you get married?" Yao answered nonchalantly, but with a tone reminiscent of Song Pearl's parents.
"Do you have any way to make him stop the car?"
"The car is on the highway; do you want him to stop and die?"
"Yao, are you in cahoots with this stranger against me?" Song Pearl gritted her teeth. "Turning a blind eye to my plight!"
"Is he really a stranger? It seems like you two have known each other for a while! Besides, I think he's not only not a bad person but also quite clever. Unlike you, who only focuses on a small pond."
The demon shrank its head and analyzed everything in an orderly manner.
"Do you have a pet?" Wan suddenly asked, looking straight ahead.
Song Pearl jolted. What did he just ask? Can he actually hear my conversation with the demon?
"How do you know?" Her voice involuntarily rose and became somewhat sharp.
"The thing wrapped around your thumb looks like a snake." Wan didn't even glance at Song Pearl. His voice sounded neither warm nor cold, exuding a kind of mature indifference that was above his appearance. Unfortunately, the distracted Song Pearl didn't notice.
He continued, "Just now, I think I heard you talking to another voice."
Upon hearing this, Song Pearl's tense nerves relaxed instead. What was she afraid of? It felt as if she had done something wrong! Even if he knew, so what?
"No, you must be hearing things!" She forced a smile that felt unnatural.
"That’s possible. With the rain pouring like this and you shouting like a madwoman, I’m feeling a bit dizzy... Actually, I just wanted to let this fish go into a wider ocean; I meant no harm. Why do you oppose it so much?"
"There are so many fish in Fish Pond, why do you specifically want to send it to the ocean?"
"Because I found this fish at the bottom of the water. It seems lifeless but is still alive." Wan tugged at the corner of his mouth. "I didn’t know how deep Fish Pond was; at its deepest point lies this lonely Pearl Fish. So, I wanted to send it to the ocean."
"How do you know this fish wants to go to the ocean? You’re not a fish; how do you know it’s unhappy in Fish Pond?"
"Oh? You’re not a fish either; how do you know it doesn’t want to go to the ocean? Does it prefer to be eaten by tourists at Resort?" Wan shot a sidelong glance at Song Pearl.
It seems that after a few years of wandering through society, this slow-witted sister has surprisingly become quite eloquent.
"Being eaten is also a form of belonging. The law of the jungle dictates that a fish has little choice! This is its fate." Song Pearl's expression was cold as she gazed ahead. She had never considered how close her home was to the sea; the vast blue ocean lay just before her.
Summer storms come quickly and leave just as fast. When the car stopped, the sun was shining brightly.
Wan carried out the water tank used for fish and placed it on the ground. Looking at the quiet Pearl Fish floating on the surface, he said, "This fish won't be eaten because it met me... You can ask it whether it prefers to go to the sea or return to the Fish Pond."
"No need to ask; it can't go to the sea right now." Song Pearl slowed down significantly. By the time she got out of the car, Wan had already moved the water tank down. "If it goes to the sea, how will I find it..."
Her voice carried a hint of sighing as the sea breeze lifted her messy black hair, covering half her face. She had always tried to grow her hair long, but perhaps due to poor hair quality, no matter how she styled it, it never looked smooth. In the end, she had no choice but to settle for an awkward short hairstyle.
She raised her eyes to look at Wan. "Let me be clear with you; I am its soul. Over a decade ago, due to a collision, I fell into this girl now called Song Pearl."
Song Pearl looked at Wan and noticed he wasn't very surprised. She asked, "Aren't you afraid of me? Aren't you shocked?"
Wan shook his head, his lips pressed tightly together, his eyes deep.
"I'll give you a story too." He gazed quietly at the distant sea surface and said, "In ancient times when chaos reigned and life was tumultuous, there was a severe drought with no rain for a long time. A girl discovered a fish on a parched rock that was nearly dried out like jerky, its bones clearly visible. Yet that fish was still alive; it begged the girl to extend its life because it did not want to die. This tenacious will to live moved the earth itself, and a drop of resin fell down and encased part of its fishbone, turning it into Amber."
"The girl was a cultivator; she transformed the part not covered by resin into a spiritual artifact, ultimately allowing the fish's life to continue. The artifact became sentient, and the fish's soul revived, taking on human form. The girl became its closest companion."
Wan glanced at the silent Song Pearl and asked, "Isn't that absurd?"
"It is somewhat absurd; it sounds like a story from another world." Song Pearl's expression remained unchanged, but her eyes were fixed on the fish in the water tank.
Wán raised an eyebrow, staring at the quiet Pearl Fish in the tank, then said, "Actually, that girl, along with some others... like the girl's husband and son, they are all just test subjects. Some bored manipulators gathered people to demonstrate what true love is in this world, and what kind of feelings can truly be called True Love Is Stronger Than Gold..."
"Unfortunately, the girl doesn't know that this is a happy growth within the game. The girl who cultivates grows up, meets a man from the outside world, falls in love at first sight, abandons everything to run away with him, gets married, has children, and lives a happy life."
"It should have been a Happy Ending, but everything did not end there; Unknown Misfortune has always followed her. Years later, the man leaves with another woman, and the girl is left in despair and heartbreak."
"Her son has grown up and understands things. For his mother’s sake, he secretly plots a plan. Before the son's plan could be executed, the mermaid who depended on them acted first. After everything returned to calm and comfort, that fish disappeared without a trace."
After finishing, Wán gave Song Pearl a meaningful glance, a smile spreading across his lips.
"Are you that girl?" Song Pearl asked.
"I am the girl's son; the girl is my mother. Sister Fish has passed; if she left, she must have turned into a Deep Water Sinking Fish. I have walked through many watery places but have not found any trace of her. That winter..."
Wán gazed at Song Pearl, his voice somewhat somber: "I should thank fate for letting me meet you; it was you who brought me here."
