When Qing Wenyu spoke, his fingers touched the snake's eyes, and the small object, the size of a rapeseed, suddenly emitted a glow at the moment it made contact with his finger.
Then, in an instant, the snake grew larger, breaking free from Song Pearl's thumb. The massive snake head flicked its bright red tongue and exhaled hot air towards Qing Wenyu's cheek.
The sudden change left Song Pearl dumbfounded, while Qing Wenyu fainted before the snake's tongue could touch his face. The car lost control, and in a panic, Song Pearl grabbed the steering wheel and pressed on the brakes.
The car narrowly stopped just before crashing into a large tree by the roadside.
Song Pearl's heart raced as she reached out to hold the snake's head, her eyes locking with the snake's.
"Are you a demon or a snake?"
The snake's head turned towards Song Pearl, its body stretched across the front seat while its tail extended to the back seat. However, this snake showed no intention of harming Song Pearl.
"Is it really a high-tech simulation product?"
Song Pearl muttered to herself as she patted the snake's head. The snake recoiled slightly at her touch.
She shook her head; the snake had finally changed, but this change seemed to further prove that what she once thought was real was merely a dream.
Song Pearl nudged the fainted Qing Wenyu; it was embarrassing that such a big man would faint at the sight of a snake!
Qing Wenyu opened his eyes and first saw Song Pearl's face very close to him, filled with concern and worry.
"Are you okay? Actually, this is just a toy, an Electronic Pet, really!"
Song Pearl squeezed Orochimaru's neck gently. The snake behaved obediently and turned its head to flick its tongue at Song Pearl.
“Electronic Pet? Who believes that! Are you trying to fool a fool?” Qing Wenyu straightened up, “This is clearly a snake! A snake with saliva and body temperature, how could it be an Electronic Pet?”
“Maybe this is a high-end pet!” Song Pearl said, her hand gently touching the snake's smooth skin.
Qing Wenyu looked at Song Pearl's fingers; the green ring on her thumb had already disappeared.
His head felt a bit dizzy as he tried hard to recall the scene from when he visited the Land Temple to pay respects.
On that mountain filled with artificial traps, a snake appeared, just like this time, and he was scared faint.
However, in his vague memory of the Land Temple, besides Song Pearl, there seemed to always be a snake present.
If he remembered correctly, this snake coiled around the car was the same one he had seen that year.
But how did it change? And why did Song Pearl think it was an Electronic Pet?
“No, this is definitely a living snake, not artificially made.”
Because of Song Pearl's words, Qing Wenyu no longer felt the previous sense of rejection and wasn't dizzy anymore. He wanted to observe it up close, but the snake wouldn’t give him any face; it seemed ready to bite him if he got too close.
“Why does it grow bigger?” Qing Wenyu tilted his head in contemplation but didn’t dare to approach too closely.
“It’s artificially made; it can grow and shrink on its own, but it hasn’t changed in a long time,” Song Pearl said. “The sudden growth this time must be because you accidentally triggered some switch! I’ve tried many methods and couldn’t make it change.”
“Who told you this is an Electronic Pet? Do you really believe that?” Qing Wenyu looked at Song Pearl. She studied Animal Husbandry, so having a snake around wasn’t strange; what was strange was that she actually didn’t know this snake was real.
"Have you ever seen a snake that can change at will? ... And can even speak human language?" The latter part was left unspoken by Song Pearl, because in her mind, it was a split personality; the creature was a companion she had imagined.
"There's none... Is that really the thing wrapped around your finger?" Qing Wenyu frowned, tightly pursing his lips.
"Of course it's real. If you don't believe me, you can check in the car."
"This is really bizarre! Song Family Village is indeed a haunted place!" Qing Wenyu muttered under his breath, "How did it end up on your finger?"
"I've already passed it; it's a pet. Pets naturally follow their owners!"
"Alright! A pet!" Qing Wenyu exhaled, not intending to dwell on this issue with Song Pearl. "What now? Are we taking this big pet to your Uncle's House? Or should we send it to a hotel to extract snake gall for a delicacy?"
"Let's put it on the back mountain of Song Family Village!" Song Pearl pondered for a moment.
"If we send it there and it suddenly appears, won't it scare the Breeder managing the back mountain to death?" Qing Wenyu turned the car around, realizing how close they had come to an accident just moments ago.
"It won't. Our back mountain has a dedicated Snake Garden and trained personnel responsible for raising snakes. This snake is non-venomous, so there's nothing to fear," Song Pearl explained.
"You raise snakes too?" Qing Wenyu seemed to be seeing Song Pearl for the first time, sizing her up from head to toe. "You're quite bold; you let tourists go hiking and picnicking in an area where you raise snakes!"
"We manage it very strictly, and our security measures are excellent. There won't be any oversights. Besides, many people enjoy going up the mountain to hunt; if they happen to release a snake, they would find it thrilling!"
Qing Wenyu said nothing as he started the car again, turning back toward the breeding farm on the back mountain of Song Family Village.
"You take it down!" He stopped the car and instructed Song Pearl while gripping the steering wheel, his eyes no longer looking at the soft creature.
Song Pearl got out of the car and opened the door, as a snake slid down from the vehicle and quickly wriggled its plump, round body forward.
"Where did you get this breed?" Just as Song Pearl got out, Keeper happened to come out as well. His eyes lit up as he watched the Grass Green Python leisurely emerge from the car. "This snake must have lived for decades, look at this Big Guy!"
"Take good care of it!" Song Pearl said before getting back into the car. Her mind was in a jumble again, and she didn't want to think about the snake anymore.
Song Shiting and Liu Cuiying were not at work; they were tidying up the room when Song Pearl arrived.
"Pearl, I want to talk to you about something!" Song Shiting said.
He was inherently honest and straightforward, but now he felt a bit awkward and uneasy about what he wanted to say.
"Is it that you want to resign from your job at the Resort? I've already heard my dad mention it!" Song Pearl sat on the soft sofa, looking at the somewhat messy room.
"Are you moving out soon?" she asked.
"Yes. That's what I wanted to discuss with you." Song Shiting still felt a bit shy. "Pearl, I'm leaving Fish Pond, and the assistant who has been working with me, Er Dan, has learned most of the breeding techniques. After I leave, he should be able to take over without any issues."
"I understand. You don't need to worry about Fish Pond. Treasure bought you a house in the city, and I'm happy about that." Song Pearl lowered her eyelids. "I haven't saved much money in these past two years. If I had money, I would do the same. You're getting older and your health isn't great; you shouldn't have to keep working so hard!"
"Oh, Pearl..." Song Shiting's eyes became moist.
At that moment, Liu Cuiying was beaming with joy; she pulled Song Pearl to sit beside her.
"We didn't expect Treasure to be so filial. There were things she did that I didn't understand before, but now I realize she did them to make our lives better. I really misjudged her. Sigh, she's getting older too, and as her mother, I need to keep an eye on her and help her find a partner soon, don't you think?"
She patted Song Pearl's hand. "If it weren't for what happened to you, Treasure would have already settled her lifelong affairs by now!"
Hearing Liu Cuiying say this made Song Pearl feel a bit uncomfortable, and she turned her face away. She didn't want that kind of thing to happen either; she was also a victim. It's just that no one understood her.
"When are you moving to D City? Should we use the Resort tour bus to take you there?" Song Pearl turned back, her face already smiling.
"No need, Treasure is coming back on the weekend; she wants us to fly over!" Liu Cuiying laughed, very happy. "I've lived more than half my life and never thought I'd have the chance to fly! I remember when I was working in the fields, watching planes roar overhead with my head tilted back, feeling so curious!"
Song Pearl laughed along with Liu Cuiying for a while before getting up to leave.
"It's late; I should have kept you for dinner before you left, but look at this mess at home—there's no way to cook, so I won't keep you."
Liu Cuiying held Song Pearl's hand and walked her to the door.
Song Pearl smiled and suppressed the feeling of desolation in her heart.
"I just came by to take a look; Qing Wenyu is still waiting for me to go back for dinner."
"Oh, so Wen Yu is here too?" Liu Cuiying took a few more steps, looking around but not seeing the car, feeling quite regretful. "This child! If I'd known, I should have invited him in for a while!"
"He had something going on at his company earlier, so he couldn't come with me," Song Pearl said as she left the house. Liu Cuiying stood at the door for a moment before turning back inside and closing the door.
"We should have kept Pearl for dinner; how could you let her go like this!" Song Shiting complained.
"Eat what? She's doing well in her marriage now; there's nothing special at home worth her coming here for!" Liu Cuiying scoffed. "Just thinking about how she ruined Treasure's chance at happiness makes me angry. It's better when it's family. Song Pearl didn't even think about buying us a house..."
"Isn't Song Pearl short on money? Didn't you praise her for being understanding and considerate before? How has that changed now?"
"Before is before, now is now! Get to work!" Liu Cuiying said irritably.
Song Pearl walked a short distance when Qing Wenyu's car followed closely behind.
"You are quite punctual," she glanced at him as he opened the car door for her. Song Pearl sat in the passenger seat, "I suddenly feel like you seem to be treating me better and better."
"A family should be like this," Qing Wenyu said with a smirk, as if it were only natural.
"But it feels like acting," Song Pearl leaned back in her seat, looking at the hazy streetlights. "Just because we are married, we should act this way and that way, trying to portray the warmth of a home, yet it never feels genuine."
"You're not being genuine?" Qing Wenyu raised an eyebrow and asked.
"Are you?" Song Pearl countered.
Qing Wenyu was momentarily silenced by Song Pearl's response, then said, "I am trying to do better; I can assure you that this comes from the heart!"
