She felt increasingly anxious, her hands moving in a flurry as she searched the room, a suffocating sensation making it hard to breathe, and a layer of sweat forming on her body.
It was a dream! Just a dream!
Song Pearl forcefully opened her eyes, looking around. It turned out she had only been dreaming, but the dream felt too real, and the cold sweat on her body had already soaked her clothes.
Song Pearl grabbed her phone and pressed the buttons; it was indeed dead. She took a deep breath, pulled out her charger from her bag, and plugged it into the wall socket.
Then, those three people across from her...
Her gaze fell on Jin Weicheng and the two women, who were in a rather unseemly state.
If something happened to this guy tonight, she would definitely be implicated! Did Wu Yuqian tamper with his drink?
Song Pearl slowly walked over and checked Jin Weicheng's breathing with her hand. Thankfully, his breathing was steady and his complexion normal; he must have just drunk too much.
She felt relieved and stood up to open the private room door. The lively sounds of the hall outside had faded away, but the sense of oppression did not disappear.
Song Pearl pressed the bell to call the waiter over.
"I want a bowl of vinegar."
"Vinegar?" The waiter shook his head awkwardly. "I'm sorry, we don't have that."
"Please go buy me a pack." Song Pearl took out some money from her bag.
"Right now?" The waiter's mouth dropped open. "It's already late at night; there's nowhere to buy anything. If you’re not leaving at this hour, I’m already working overtime, and you want me to buy vinegar!"
"Yes, I want that Aged Chen Vinegar." Song Pearl pulled out a few bills from her wallet. "Thank you for your hard work. Please hurry."
"Alright! For the sake of the money," the waiter took Song Pearl's cash. At this time, the early morning shops were already up and cooking, so finding some aged vinegar wasn't as troublesome as he thought.
Song Pearl didn't wait long before the waiter brought in a bucket of vinegar, smiling as he said, "This is genuine Aged Chen Vinegar!"
As he set down the vinegar, he glanced at the three people sleeping in the booth. "Are you planning to wake Jin Shao with vinegar? There's really no need; this booth is reserved by Mr. Jin long-term. He often drinks here and stays overnight!"
Perhaps the tip had an effect, as the waiter shared a bit more information with Song Pearl.
"Is he often like this?"
"Well, it's quite normal to drink like that in a bar. It's rare to see someone as sober as you!" The waiter chuckled. "Mr. Jin is actually easier to serve this time; he simply fell asleep!"
"Thank you!" Song Pearl politely thanked him and sent the waiter away. She picked up the wine glass that Jin Weicheng had used earlier and filled it with aged vinegar, then walked over to him and pushed aside the woman leaning against him, pinching his nose and forcing the vinegar into his mouth.
"Ah! Cough cough!" Jin Weicheng, still in a drunken stupor, felt nauseous and opened his mouth to vomit.
Song Pearl was prepared; she grabbed his collar and turned his head toward a nearby trash can. The vomit was foul-smelling but she managed to keep it contained.
"You woman! What are you doing with such force?"
Once he regained his composure, Jin Weicheng glared at Song Pearl and shouted.
Still feeling uncomfortable from just vomiting, he held his throat.
"You lost. Now go figure out what happened with my dad's report," Song Pearl said coldly, staring intently at Jin Weicheng.
"You woman! How could I lose? The game isn't over yet!" Jin Weicheng, feeling unconvinced, leaned back and noticed something was off. Turning around, he saw two drunken hostesses leaning awkwardly beside him.
"What’s wrong with these two? They got drunk after just a few drinks!"
Fuming, Jin Weicheng pushed the two women aside and sprawled out on the sofa, staring at the ceiling.
"You’re not even drunk!" After a moment, he slapped his forehead and exclaimed, "You’re unbelievable! How can someone be like this?"
Suddenly, he sat up straight and pointed at Song Pearl, asking, "How did you mix the drinks?"
Song Pearl looked at Jin Weicheng with amusement; he came off not just as unreasonable but also somewhat foolish.
"You lost the drinking game; you should keep your promise," Song Pearl said with a smirk. "My dad is innocent. I hope you can find evidence. I'll be waiting here."
"Song Pearl," Jin Weicheng leaned forward, "pour me a cup of tea."
Song Pearl glanced at him and silently brewed a strong cup of tea for him.
"We don’t know each other well, but drinking can make friends. I understand your situation, but I can't help with this," Jin Weicheng said as he took a sip of the tea.
"The company's accounts are clear; the auditing department found that three years ago your dad indeed misappropriated some funds, and it was quite a sum."
"Actually, as the chairman of the company, it's normal to misappropriate some funds as long as they are paid back later. The problem is that after this money was misappropriated, it remained unaccounted for, with no evidence showing it has been returned."
"Perhaps your dad returned that money or maybe he didn't; it’s not really a big deal! The key issue is that now that he has left the company, this account has come under scrutiny, and the shareholders are holding onto it tightly."
"So you can only accept your misfortune and pay back this money. If you can't repay it, your dad will inevitably face some serious legal troubles."
“How much was misappropriated?”
“Not much, about a hundred million! You should have that amount, right? If not, I can lend it to you!” Jin Weicheng said with a smile as he lit a cigarette. “But how will you repay me?”
Song Pearl ignored Jin Weicheng's expression. A hundred million—what did Wu Qiang use that much money for?
If it was for building a resort, a hundred million could elevate the current Jinshan Resort to a much higher standard. Clearly, that wasn't the case. So what did he use that money for?
“Does this have anything to do with Wu Yuqian?”
“What does she have to do with it? She’s Wu Qiang’s daughter; she should be distancing herself from this situation instead of being involved!” Jin Weicheng took a deep drag from his cigarette and said angrily, “But that girl is really inconsiderate, leaving me behind! Just wait and see how I deal with her!”
“Is what you said true?” Song Pearl asked again.
“Do I need to lie to you? If you don’t believe me, our company is holding a Board of Directors meeting tomorrow. You can sit in, and afterward, I’ll take you to check the accounts from the past three years.”
“No need.” Song Pearl stood up. “I’ll go ask my dad for clarification. If it’s true, I’ll find a way to pay back the misappropriated funds.”
Jin Weicheng stopped her. “Hey, don’t be in such a hurry to leave; it’s still early! At least take a break and have some breakfast before you go.” He grinned and added, “It’s not convenient here; why don’t we go next door to the big hotel and get a room?”
Song Pearl raised her eyebrows slightly and clenched her hands.
“I’ll book two rooms. We’ll each have one!” Jin Weicheng said as he ruffled his hair. “Actually, you don’t need to be afraid; you have no attraction for me at all.”
“Fine!” Song Pearl pursed her lips and decided not to argue further. It was still early; she should find a place to rest for a bit.
Before leaving, she glanced back at the two escort girls sleeping soundly on the sofa and asked Jin Weicheng, “What kind of alcohol were we drinking after they came in?”
"Just the usual drinks. You see, the shelves in this private room are filled with world-famous wines that I've collected, along with some gifts from Wu Yuqian and other friends. Tonight, you’ll be drinking a few million of my assets."
"Is this place owned by your family?"
"No, the owner of this place is quite mysterious. Some say he was a thug before debuting, while others claim the owner is a beautiful woman. In any case, it's hard to catch a glimpse of him; even someone as capable as I am has never seen him."
"In just two or three years, it has already taken down several competitors in the city! But this is a place for the wealthy; ordinary tycoons can't afford it!"
The two of them arrived downstairs, where the doorman bowed and welcomed them to visit again.
Song Pearl glanced back at the towering neon sign. "Is this the largest establishment in D City?"
"Of course! Do you doubt my capabilities?" Jin Weicheng stopped and turned back. "If I want to enjoy myself, I choose the best."
Song Pearl searched her memories of this city. In her past life, during her brief time here, memories began to piece together. Back then, she was the beloved daughter of Wu Qiang, the richest man in D City. Although she wasn't good at socializing, she had many peers and was familiar with all entertainment venues.
However, she didn't recall there being such a famous establishment known as the Human Realm Hall in her previous life.
"Meeting someone like me today is your good fortune," Jin Weicheng said as he walked beside Song Pearl, one hand naturally resting on her waist while the other pointed ahead. "It's very close; that hotel across the street is quite nice."
Song Pearl sensed something when Jin Weicheng's hand rested on her waist; a flash of light caught her attention.
It seemed someone was taking a photo.
She looked around but noticed that there were hardly any pedestrians and saw nothing unusual.
"What are you looking at?" Jin Weicheng asked. "Are you afraid your husband will come to check up on you?"
Song Pearl did not respond, and the two hurriedly entered the hotel ahead.
In the morning, Wu Yuqian went downstairs after getting ready. Liu Cuiying curiously glanced behind her and said, "Oh, Pearl didn't come down with you?"
"No, she had something going on last night and asked me to let you know she'll visit when she has time," Wu Yuqian replied with a sweet smile. "Mom, what delicious food did you make this morning?"
She had a sweet appearance, and whenever she smiled, it was always charming and endearing.
Liu Cuiying quickly set the table and said, "I got up early to make your favorite pumpkin pastries. I thought Pearl would be here too; I wanted her to try some as well. But it seems she won't have that fortune! Where did she go? Why don't you give her a call and invite her over for dinner?"
"Okay, I'll ask her." Wu Yuqian sat down at the table just as her phone rang.
She glanced at the screen before answering, listening silently without hanging up.
"Mom, hurry up! I'm in a rush to eat and get to work!" she shouted towards the kitchen.
