Entering the office area of the Resort, it felt eerily quiet, almost musty. Even the birds that usually chirped were silent.
In Song Pearl's office, sunlight streamed through the blinds, illuminating her hand holding a pen.
This hand was pale and slender, devoid of any adornments.
Song Pearl gazed at the back of her hand, momentarily lost in thought; the once vivid green snake ring that had wrapped around her finger felt distant now, like a dream.
Yuan Peng had resigned and left, and Song Yaya had just submitted her resignation report.
"Even if I am no longer the general manager of the Resort, you can still work here. Why resign?" Song Pearl held the resignation report in her hand and looked at Song Yaya, who was dressed impeccably and had shed her rustic appearance.
"Pearl," Song Yaya smiled lightly, a hint of helplessness in her expression. "I plan to resign now; I hope you don't mind me calling you Pearl?"
Song Pearl shook her head, gesturing for her to sit down.
Song Yaya unceremoniously pulled out a chair and sat across from Song Pearl.
"The first time I paid close attention to you was when you came to my house to reimburse my dad for medical expenses. You were quite remarkable then; you actually made my dad so angry he slammed the table. At that time, I was just a gluttonous girl who loved to eat and sleep, enjoying the privileges of being the village chief's daughter. I was content with just having a job as a helper serving dishes, but I never expected to end up working under you and even becoming the manager of the catering department. Thank you for helping me realize my own value."
Song Pearl listened with a smile. "You have that ability; of course, it should be used in the right position. But you don't need to thank me; it was Yuan Peng who discovered your talent. You should thank him instead."
"Without you, he wouldn't have come here; I still want to thank you."
Song Yaya stubbornly bit her lip and continued, "Now there are rumors that the Resort will be demolished, so we have to plan ahead. Since we will leave sooner or later, it's better to leave on our own terms than be forced out. I have a strong sense of pride and don't want to be expelled."
Song Pearl looked into her eyes. "You're different from your father. He’s old yet still strives to protect the village while you’re leaving so quickly as his daughter. He would be very upset if he knew!"
"People move on; trees adapt to survive. I've advised my dad countless times about his outdated thinking. He's too stubborn." Song Yaya smiled at this.
"I know this may seem lacking in compassion and feels a bit disloyal. However, like Yuan Peng, I don’t want to witness our hard-earned Resort being destroyed by outsiders; I can only choose to retreat early."
"Since you've made up your mind, everyone has their own aspirations; I won't force you." Song Pearl lowered her head and signed her name on the resignation report. "I hope you have a better future ahead."
After she returned, rumors about the imminent demolition of the Resort were rampant, and several mid-level managers had already come in to resign early that morning.
After Song Yaya stepped out of the office, a few more people came in one after another with resignation letters for Song Pearl to sign.
Jin Mai's team had not yet arrived for the handover, and the Resort was already struggling to operate.
Once it finally quieted down, Song Pearl rubbed her slightly sore eyes; it seemed she hadn't slept well last night.
The manager from the Ecological Aquaculture Farm had already resigned. After Song Shiting left, someone he recommended took over management at South Lake Fishing Grounds. Hearing that it was going to be transferred, that person was also busy submitting their resignation report.
In the blink of an eye, she still hadn't figured out how to handle the upcoming business, and surprisingly, more than half of the professional talents she had carefully cultivated over the past two years had left.
Song Pearl left the office area and wandered alone through every corner of the Resort. The fallen leaves of late autumn lay on the ground, contrasting with the brand-new villas and adding to the desolation.
Occasionally, a few tourists walked by her side, all complaining that Jinshan Resort was just a name without substance and that the service was inadequate.
"Listen, it's going to close down soon due to poor management!"
"No wonder the food is so terrible! What a waste of money without any beautiful scenery to see; it's such a pity!"
"There’s a Fishing Lake here; I heard there are thousands of geese swimming on it, which is particularly beautiful. I specially went over to take a look—where are those thousands of geese? The Fishing Lake is just floating with goose feathers and droppings, and there isn't even anyone managing it!"
"...The owner of this Resort is in debt and probably can't pay salaries, so many people have stolen things to sell! This Ecological Aquaculture Farm has some valuable rare birds and game!"
These discussions reached Song Pearl's ears word for word. She hadn't expected that the employees at the Resort had become so disheartened.
Unknowingly wandering near the Fish Pond, she saw that there was indeed no one at the ticket window. Beside the Fish Pond sat a man wearing a straw hat, fishing alone.
Wu Qiang had returned but was still living in Song Shiting's old house. At this moment, he was staring intently at his fishing rod.
Song Pearl did not approach him but instead took a detour from the path behind him.
After she walked over, Wu Qiang, who was originally fishing by the Fish Pond, slowly turned his head and sighed as he looked at her thin and desolate back.
"Pearl, you need to learn to be strong slowly."
He silently thought to himself.
"President Song, watch your step." As Song Pearl approached the vicinity of the Back Mountain Snake Garden, she was pushed slightly by a figure rushing over in a panic, causing her to nearly stumble.
The girl wearing a sun hat quickly reached out to support her, repeatedly saying "I'm sorry."
Song Pearl took a moment to assess this girl with delicate features and somewhat dark skin. Her black hair was tied back into a ponytail, highlighting her youthful vitality, and when she smiled, she revealed a set of white, slightly crooked teeth.
"President Song, look at that snake." One hand supporting Song Pearl, the other pointed at a thick Azure Snake wriggling on the ground.
"Oh, it's fine." Song Pearl glanced at the snake on the ground. After three years of close encounters, she had grown accustomed to calling it a monster; however, this monster did not recognize her now.
"Are you the new staff member?" Song Pearl smiled at the girl, who looked no more than seventeen or eighteen.
"Yes!" The girl was very cheerful, and when she smiled, two dimples appeared on her face. "I've been here for a while now, chatting with the animals every day!"
"How do you know me?" Song Pearl looked at this familiar girl with curiosity.
"Because I often hear people mention you! I've also heard many stories about you!" The girl smiled cutely, her lips curving up.
She looked around and said mysteriously, "I've even seen your photo! That's definitely you! The mole at the corner of your eye is very distinctive!"
Song Pearl awkwardly touched the corner of her eye. Her photo? Where had it been seen? She felt curious but didn't dare to ask.
The girl continued, "President Song, I heard you're studying Animal Husbandry, which is why you're raising so many rare animals in the back mountain. Some of these rare birds are difficult to keep alive elsewhere, but they have thrived here in our Ecological Aquaculture Farm!"
"And there are those Pearl Fish that aren't suitable for local growth. Many places' Fish Ponds have never managed to keep them alive, but there are so many in the Fishing Lake..."
"You see this large Azure Snake? It has dual-colored eyes, and it was sent by you! President Song, do you really like animals?"
Girl spoke enthusiastically.
Song Pearl smiled slightly, "It's alright! Are you happy working here?" she asked.
"Of course I'm happy!" Girl's eyes sparkled with joy as she bent down to pick up the wriggling head of the Orochimaru snake on the ground. "All the animals here are my good friends; they're much better than studying at school. It's just that there are many animals whose names I can't remember!"
She sighed in disappointment, "I only know wild boars, pheasants, snakes, peacocks, and geese..." She counted on her fingers, furrowing her brow in thought.
Song Pearl found it amusing; this Girl was quite cute and a bit silly.
"Sister, let's be friends!" Girl suddenly put the snake down and hugged Song Pearl's arm.
"Okay." Song Pearl smiled. So far, the only person she had actively made friends with was Hong Xinran. She didn't expect to meet another girl who wanted to be friends with her here.
"You’re older than me, so you’re my sister now. Here’s my phone number."
Before Song Pearl could react, Girl quickly pulled out her phone from her pocket, entered her number, and dialed it. Her phone rang with a very trendy and cheerful tune.
"Sister, are you feeling down?" Girl handed the phone to Song Pearl, looking at her with big eyes and a pout. "Now that we’re friends, we share both good times and bad. If something's bothering you, tell me, and I promise I'll make you happy."
Song Pearl nodded with a smile, "Thank you, little sister. What's your name?"
"What’s my name?" Girl placed a finger on her lips and thought for a moment before saying, "My name is Pearl, Song Pearl!"
"Uh..." Song Pearl raised an eyebrow; they had the same name!
"I’m also called Song Pearl."
Song Pearl smiled at Girl, "Do you not know my name?"
"I know! That's why I called you Song Pearl!" Girl said seriously.
"I see! So I'm your idol, right?"
The two sat on a rock at the top of the mountain, chatting happily. A green Orochimaru coiled around their legs, occasionally lifting its head to flick its bright red tongue.
"Ani! Ani! Where did you run off to?"
While they were talking, a man's voice called out from not far away, mixed with some frantic anger.
"I'm right here! I'm having a heart-to-heart with President Song!" Girl stood up and waved at the man who was running over, drenched in sweat, with a silly grin on her face.
"President Song, what do you mean by that? How could President Song be here chatting with you!"
The man mumbled as he approached, and only when he got closer did he notice the calm Song Pearl sitting there. He moved his lips slightly, his expression flickering as he awkwardly said, "President Song, how do you have time to come here? This is my cousin; I brought her to help me!"
"Oh," Song Pearl nodded and asked, "How much do you pay her for a month?" (To be continued...)
