The dinner at Wu Qiang's house was not very pleasant. After the meal, Song Pearl and Qing Wenyu each drove home.
On the way, a sense of unease settled in Song Pearl's heart like pebbles dropped into a lake.
After parking her car and walking into the yard, she saw Qing Wenyu, who had returned earlier, standing in the courtyard looking up at the stars.
She remained silent, her back stiff as she tried to pass by him.
The truth was that he was the biggest victim, yet she was angrier than he was.
As she walked beside him, Qing Wenyu reached out and accurately grasped her hanging hand, his fingers slightly cool.
She looked up at him; although calm, his dark eyes sparkled with starlight.
"You don't need to worry too much about these things," he said.
"But this isn't just nothing," Song Pearl bit her lip. She could overlook her own issues, but she felt guilty for causing trouble for others. "We owe you an apology."
Her head lowered; she had never felt so guilty before. Was Wu Qiang's struggle all just an act?
All those worries she once had now seemed like mere entertainment in his eyes!
Who could remain indifferent when constantly doubted like this?
Was she overthinking things?
A soft sigh came from above her. Before she could react, Qing Wenyu suddenly pulled her into his embrace. Just as she lifted her head, a sudden and passionate kiss fell heavily upon her lips.
Song Pearl's body stiffened; they were still in the yard! Perhaps he was too invested; she only made a slight struggle. Then she wrapped her arms around his neck, slightly rising on her toes to match his height, slowly responding to his advances.
Lips and teeth intertwined, there was a mix of bittersweet feelings. Whether it was due to that uncertain sensation or the fear of losing something, tears flowed from Song Pearl's eyes.
"Song Pearl, if one day your dad asks you to leave me, would you?"
As they separated, Qing Wenyu's usually deep and persistent gaze held a sense of inquiry and uncertainty.
"Your dad once encouraged you to divorce me, but you didn't abandon me," Song Pearl brought up this matter, feeling it was somewhat of a joke.
"That was then, this is now. Back then, you didn't know the truth! I was always worried that if the truth came out, you would hate me, thinking I deliberately delayed you!"
Song Pearl shook her head and lowered her gaze. She didn't want to think too much.
"You don't need to doubt my father-in-law. The fact that he was framed for transferring company assets is true; everything that happened to him wasn't a lie. He really is destitute, yet he raised Zhang Yunye as his successor."
Qing Wenyu's voice was unusually gentle. "This has nothing to do with him testing me. Ultimately, he only wants what's best for you. In his heart, marrying Zhang Yunye is the best life for you."
"Do you think the same?" Song Pearl raised her eyes, unable to decipher the sorrowful look in Qing Wenyu's gaze. "My life's goal is to marry you and be your wife, so I won't leave you."
She rested her head on his shoulder. "Even if you don't love me, it's okay."
"Don't be silly; I thought you wouldn't overthink things!" He raised his hand to tuck away the strands of hair that covered her face.
The two embraced as they walked toward the bedroom, the earlier gloom dissipating completely.
"By the way, my parents want us to go to their house for dinner today!" Qing Wenyu suddenly said as he took the Goat Milk that Song Pearl handed him.
"Today? What time is it now?" Song Pearl hurriedly asked.
The previously warm atmosphere was disrupted, and they exchanged smiles.
"Quick, check if there are any missed calls?" Song Pearl sat next to Qing Wenyu, looking for his phone.
"No need to look, I left it in the office," Qing Wenyu replied slowly.
"Why didn't you call me?" Song Pearl took out her own phone, which showed a missed call from Tian Yue!
Song Pearl stuck out her tongue sheepishly, "I didn't hear it at that time! Should I call back?"
"What time is it already!"
Qing Wenyu sneezed twice in quick succession.
Song Pearl laughed, "Your parents must be scolding you!"
"Impossible, it's just dinner. I think I'm coming down with a bit of a cold!" Qing Wenyu sniffled, clearly a bit congested.
At that moment, Tian Yue had just finished clearing a table full of delicious dishes.
"After waiting so long! This kid doesn't take promises to heart anymore. He clearly promised to come back for dinner but hasn't even shown up!" Tian Yue grumbled.
"It seems like something happened at the Ecological Aquaculture Farm today. A difficult client that the company's Song Zhenbao brought in wants to buy that grass snake we've been raising for several years..."
Qing Yuansheng, who was watching TV, changed the channel and explained upon hearing Tian Yue's unhappy complaints.
"Why are you in such a good mood today? If it were before, you would have been fuming and throwing a fit!" Tian Yue finished tidying up and sat down next to him.
"How can there be such big anger in a family!" Qing Yuansheng said with a smile as he looked at the TV screen.
"Have you finally stopped rejecting pearls?" Tian Yue asked him.
"Listening to you, I have never rejected her!" Qing Yuansheng put down the remote control.
Tian Yue clicked his tongue twice, "You haven't rejected her? Not even that cat would believe it!"
As they spoke, the White Cat quietly walked past the door.
Qing Yuansheng ignored Tian Yue's words, focusing his attention on the animal documentary on TV.
"The green grass snake on the back mountain of Song Family Village doesn't seem to be bred by Song Pearl. I remember seeing one back then." He frowned and looked at Tian Yue, "At that time on the back mountain, that grass snake was the king; no other snake dared to provoke it. How come now I'm hearing it's not a real snake?"
"How would I know about your village's matters!" Tian Yue said unhappily as he picked up the remote control. "Talking about snakes late at night is creepy; change the channel."
The TV switched channels, but Qing Yuansheng's thoughts remained on the snake from the back mountain.
Listen, that snake was made into an Electronic Pet by Song Pearl. It looked very realistic; it wasn't a real grass snake? Song Pearl was into ecological farming; what would she want an Electronic Pet for?
If that snake wasn't a real grass snake, what about the one from the back mountain? Over the years, perhaps it had already been caught. If it hadn't been caught, it might still be in the back mountain.
Qing Yuansheng regretted not paying attention to Wildlife all this time and was considering going to the back mountain tomorrow.
Song Pearl only went to the Ecological Aquaculture Farm on the back mountain at noon. Ani excitedly ran over to tell her that they had discovered a snake in a hidden cave on the mountain that looked exactly like the Python from Snake Garden.
"Sister, do you know about this back mountain? Did you already know about that snake?" Ani asked. "It's identical to our Snake Garden's!"
"I don't know," Song Pearl said as she set down her bag. She was also curious, "Where is it? Take me to see!"
"It was taken away by President Song and a few others early this morning," Ani replied. "I woke up this morning and suddenly wanted to go check on our Electronic Snake in Snake Garden. I just happened to see them putting the snake into a cage and loading it onto a car. I thought our snake had escaped, so I followed behind shouting... but since I couldn't catch up with them, I had to come back. When I got home, our snake was still sitting perfectly in its pool!"
"Later, when I met people from the research institute, I found out that snake was discovered in a cave! They were all very regretful that they hadn't found this thing sooner; it might have been a nationally protected animal for all these years..."
“Song Zhenbao how could we know there are snakes in the cave on the back mountain? We didn't even know on the mountain,” Song Pearl interrupted Ani's rambling. “Who took her up the mountain to find it?”
“I think it was someone from Song Family Village,” Ani thought for a moment. “I don't know who, but I'll go ask them!”
She dashed out and returned shortly, “They said it was President Song's dad who helped find it!”
“Oh, I see!” Song Pearl nodded. If anyone could find the grass snake on this mountain, it would definitely be Song Shiting. If one identical snake was caught, was the one in Snake Garden still there?
Song Pearl hurriedly walked towards Snake Garden.
Ani ran after her, chattering away.
“Don’t worry, sister, I already checked. Your snake is lying in the pool, its posture is just like before, not changed at all…”
“Are we still feeding our Electronic Snake? It really seems wasteful to keep feeding it! Since it looks exactly the same, could it be that the food from before was eaten by another snake?”
Her series of questions went unanswered as she followed Song Pearl, her face tense. When she saw Song Pearl stop by the snake pool, she also halted, pursing her lips as she looked at her.
Song Pearl squatted down and raised her hand to summon Orochimaru, but the snake remained motionless.
“It’s not dead, is it?” Ani whispered.
“Impossible,” Song Pearl chuckled. “How could a mechanical snake die?” As she spoke, her hand touched the snake's large head, and the originally grass-green snake instantly turned a withered yellow and collapsed limply.
“Snake skin?” Song Pearl retracted her hand.
It seemed that regardless of what it was, it had been taken away!
On the highway leading out of the province, a business vehicle sped along. Inside, a man guarded a cage while contentedly humming a tune as he looked at the Azure Snake.
He is the customer who contacted Song Zhenbao to buy the snake.
He had seen enough, spat out the chewing gum, and picked up his phone to make a call. "The Snake Specimen created by Former Great Scientist has finally arrived. You can continue your research when you get back. It wasn't easy!"
The man burst into laughter at whatever response he received from the other end.
Before his laughter had subsided, Orochimaru, who had been curled up in the cage with its eyes closed and motionless, suddenly opened its eyes wide. Its large head shrank back as it tried to squeeze out of the cage.
However, the cage made for the snake was constructed from special materials, very dense, and it couldn't escape at all. Moreover, it changed along with the snake's body.
Orochimaru glared with its two bright red eyes and flicked out its long tongue, which retracted as soon as it touched the cage.
"Useless!" The man laughed as he stared at the snake in the cage. "You think I would let you escape so easily? Years ago, you swallowed a fish and got away. Now that I've finally found you, just behave and go back!"
The snake in the cage seemed unwilling; it repeatedly slammed its head against the edge of the cage but to no avail. (To be continued...)
