Mountain Breeze A gentle breeze blew by, mixed with the scent of fresh grass, and a few drops of rain fell from somewhere, pattering onto the withered snake skin.
Song Pearl found a box to store the rolled-up snake skin and carried it to a slope near the Land Temple. She fetched a shovel and dug a deep pit, placing the box inside.
"Snake shedding can be used for medicine; this large snake shedding is worth even more."
As Song Pearl sprinkled soil onto the box, a voice came from behind her.
"It has already aged and decayed, lying dormant for who knows how many years. It can't be used for medicine; it's better to bury it and let it rest." Song Pearl did not turn around but continued her task until fresh soil filled the pit. She then sighed and sat down on the grass beside her, raising her eyes to look at Zhang Yunye, who stood behind her.
"Did you bring this snake?" she asked.
"You know very well that I didn't; its age is even greater than mine!" Zhang Yunye shook his head seriously. "It came here on its own."
"So it was still caught by someone; that person must have come for it. You know that too?" Song Pearl looked at him.
"Yes, I knew when I saw him; this Song Family Village is truly a great place." Zhang Yunye smiled and changed the subject. "Has your demon not appeared yet?"
"It won't appear anymore. Are you regretting not taking it away back then?"
"Why would I regret that? I'm not Fa Hai, capturing demons that I find displeasing!" Zhang Yunye had a wounded expression on his serious face. "I'm just an ordinary person. You think too highly of me."
Song Pearl picked up a twig and drew patterns in the dirt. "Stubborn. Shouldn't you be leaving soon?"
"It's still early; you just asked me to stay longer, and now you want me to leave. You're really fickle!" Zhang Yunye squatted under a nearby tree, gazing at the distant Land Temple.
"Your connection with Qing Wenyu began at that Land Temple, along with this snake, so it can be considered your red thread. No wonder you chose to bury it here."
Song Pearl was also looking in the same direction; today's Land Temple, after renovations, was vastly different—quite grand.
"Where will that snake be taken? It doesn't have the luck of the Pearl Fish to return to the sea!"
“Pearl Fish is my personal bias, but I have no feelings for that snake,” Zhang Yunye said to Song Pearl said lightly, “Originally, Pearl Fish should have returned to the same place as the snake, but now only the snake has gone back. Pearl Fish can thrive in the depths of the ocean. This is all because of you!”
“Because I, this crazy person, look like your sister!” Song Pearl laughed as she stood up. “That snake was able to bring in some money for Song Zhenbao before leaving, so it’s worth it!”
What she meant was that it benefited Song Zhenbao.
“It didn’t bring in much because it wasn’t the original snake,” Zhang Yunye said with a sly wink. “It was originally theirs, and once it fell into your hands, you had to find a legitimate reason to take it away, which led to a signed contract. But since it was a last-minute exchange, the price had to be discounted…”
“Do you all have the ability to control others' thoughts? Otherwise, how could Song Zhenbao have signed so carelessly?”
“You have that ability too; it’s just that mine is a bit stronger than yours…”
“I see. So mine is gone.” Song Pearl took a step forward and then turned back. “Will I ever regain that ability?”
“You’re already married; having that ability would be useless and would only disrupt the balance of this environment. It’s unlikely you’ll get it back,” Zhang Yunye shrugged.
“Yeah, with so many people around me who care about me, what do I need those powers for?” Song Pearl smiled with a curve of her lips, returning the same smile to the man in front of her.
Song Pearl’s mood instantly sank. Once, her smile could control people's consciousness, but this person before her told her it was just a delusion. If she could, she really wanted to teach him a lesson.
Just as this thought crossed her mind, Zhang Yunye unexpectedly glanced at Song Pearl, his gaze sharp as a knife.
Song Pearl shrank her neck in guilt; compared to him, she felt insignificant and decided not to entertain such unfounded thoughts anymore. She should just be honest!
In the office, Song Zhenbao opened a package. The package looked ordinary, but inside were two exquisite pens. She took one out; there was nothing different about this pen from others until her hand pressed on a certain part, and a sound emerged.
Listening to the conversation coming from the pen, Song Zhenbao’s bright expression grew colder.
So this is how it is; this is the reason for her miscalculations since her rebirth. The final truth isn’t about Jin Father and Son, nor is it that she underestimated things; it’s that Wu Qiang is also reborn!
No wonder he held himself in the palm of his hand one moment and then recognized Song Pearl as his biological daughter the next. It turns out he had known all along, yet he could refrain from seeking revenge on himself. Was there a greater scheme at play?
He must have enjoyed watching her desire something unattainable!
Song Zhenbao took out the embedded item from the fountain pen, found a hammer, smashed it, and threw it into the trash can.
That Zhang Yunye was indeed in cahoots with Wu Qiang. Although she sensed something was off and didn’t believe Zhang Yunye would help her for no reason, she hadn’t realized it was also orchestrated by Wu Qiang. Just how many hidden moves did Wu Qiang have that she was unaware of?
Having lived again, Song Zhenbao was still too naive.
She finally understood that Qing Wenyu didn’t accept her feelings because he knew about Wu Qiang’s background. Everything made sense now.
She regretted not having searched for clues about Wu Qiang earlier. It was just that he played the role of a carefree wanderer too convincingly and ended up in such dire straits that he needed to rely on his son-in-law for support, which made her careless.
It wasn’t too late to realize it now! As long as Song Pearl was dead, everything would return to normal. What was hers would still be hers; she would definitely be happy and wouldn’t repeat the same mistakes of her past life that led to her death in an accident.
Thinking this way, a smile spread across her lips.
Song Zhenbao placed the pen back into its packaging and called her Secretary, instructing her to take the pen away.
“Have the supply department take this back; it’s a sample of office supplies I pre-ordered. If it’s suitable, purchase a batch,” she ordered.
The Secretary nodded and, while leaving with the box of pens, inadvertently caught sight of her slightly pale face. She quickly lowered her head and exited.
When Song Zhenbao returned home after work, Liu Cuiying had already prepared dinner. After washing her hands, she sat at the dining table and watched as Liu Cuiying brought out plate after plate of fragrant dishes from the kitchen.
“You’ve never cooked for yourself, have you?”
While serving the dishes, Liu Cuiying spoke loudly, “Living alone is too hard. Why don’t I stay here to cook for you? Your dad can go back and take care of Fei!”
"Treasure. Did you hear what your mom said? You look like you've lost your soul."
"What?" Song Zhenbao picked up her bowl. "This dish smells really good; I'm starving. Let's eat!" She picked up her chopsticks to grab some food.
"Don't eat yet," Liu Cuiying called out. "We haven't finished serving the dishes!"
Still not done with six dishes and one soup? Song Zhenbao paused with her chopsticks. Wasn't this meal prepared just for her? Don't eat yet—could there be something even more sumptuous?
"I invited Pearl to come over for dinner tonight!" Liu Cuiying said with a smile. "So I prepared a few extra dishes."
Song Zhenbao looked displeased. "This is my home; how can you casually invite someone over without telling me first?"
"I thought she could introduce you to someone... With your dad and me not around, you sisters should support each other when you're out. Now that conditions are better, it's not like the old days when life was tough. This morning, Pearl brought over some vegetables. Last time she came to our house, she liked the taste of the dishes here. I didn't expect she would still remember..."
"Clang!" Song Zhenbao put down her chopsticks again; it was Song Pearl. Her own parents always seemed to prefer what was not in front of them, and in comparison to Song Pearl, she always felt inadequate.
Liu Cuiying's excited words suddenly halted as she looked at Song Zhenbao with a frown.
At that moment, there was a sound at the door, and Song Pearl and Qing Wenyu walked in one after the other, followed by a handsome Zhang Yunye.
"Hey, hey, you're here!" Liu Cuiying cheerfully pulled out chairs for the three of them. She noticed Zhang Yunye looking at Song Pearl with hearts in his eyes and asked, "When did this guy arrive?"
"He’s been here for a while!" Zhang Yunye replied politely while setting down the gift box he was carrying. "I knew Uncle and Aunt were here, so I came along with Pearl to see you all!"
"Great, great!" Liu Cuiying exclaimed happily. "Song Shiting, stop lingering in the kitchen and come out to join the guests!" After calling out, Song Shiting, wearing an apron, peeked out from the kitchen. "There's one more dish; it will be ready soon!"
Seeing these elegant guests arrive, Song Zhenbao stood up to help Liu Cuiying set the table and went back to the kitchen to bring out more dishes.
"Please sit down; don’t just stand there. Treasure, you don’t need to serve; just keep them company!" Although Liu Cuiying said this, everyone still waited for her and Song Shiting to sit down before they took their seats at the dining table.
"Would you like to have some wine?" Song Shiting asked with a smile. He felt a sense of familiarity with the young people, Qing Wenyu and Zhang Yunye, as he had seen them when he was ill years ago.
Everyone shook their heads, and Song Shiting no longer insisted, saying, "Then let's eat."
In front of each person was a bowl of thick Eight Treasure Porridge, a common dish from Song Family Village. Since they weren't drinking, everyone focused on enjoying the soup and dishes.
With so many people around, the dining table was lively and warm.
"It's much more enjoyable to eat with more people. How can Treasure always be alone?" Liu Cuiying looked at Song Zhenbao, who was happily eating, and added, "I just saved some food for you..."
"Oh, no need. You all go back and take care of Fei. He needs someone to cook for him while he's in school. I rarely get to eat at home because of work!" Song Zhenbao glanced at the dining table. "We're eating now, so don't worry about anything else!"
"This child is becoming more and more like Pearl!" Liu Cuiying said lovingly as she looked at her. "Pearl didn't care about anything back then. You've been here for two years, and you're almost the same now!"
Song Pearl smiled and asked, "Was I really like that back then? I don't remember!"
"Is that so?" This time, Song Zhenbao didn't resist much. She put down her bowl. "I'll take you to see the old house tomorrow and also check out our Fish Pond. How does that sound?"
"That sounds great! We were just thinking about visiting the old house tomorrow!" Liu Cuiying said happily. Song Shiting nodded as well, "Pearl, would you like to join us?" (To be continued...)
