Song Pearl accurately caught the few tickets that were about to land without thinking, and raised her hand to throw them at the other person. However, Tian Yue pressed her hand down and shook his head, saying, "It's better to avoid trouble; just wipe it off in the back."
Is this also a relative of Gao Xiaoxia's family?
Song Pearl looked towards the figure that had already walked to the hotel entrance and felt that this person exuded a certain hostility.
Before Song Pearl and Tian Yue could get closer, a loud commotion came from the hotel lobby entrance.
It was normal for the bride and groom to stand at the door welcoming guests, but it was not normal when a fight broke out. As Song Pearl and Tian Yue approached the crowd filled with discussions, they saw that the imposing woman from earlier was now being pulled away as she faced off against Gao Xiaoxia, with harsh insults echoing around them.
The bride, dressed in extravagant attire and heavy makeup, was pushed to the ground, with five red fingerprints visible on her face. A tall man in a suit standing nearby, adorned with a boutonnière, remained indifferent.
"I heard she's the groom's ex-wife. Why is she causing a scene even after the divorce?"
"Maybe it makes her feel better to stir things up!"
The guests who came to celebrate whispered among themselves, and soon the troublemaking woman was dragged away. Only then did Song Pearl and Tian Yue head towards the restroom.
"Thank goodness we didn't get into it with her! That woman is quite pitiful," Tian Yue remarked.
When they came out, guests had already taken their seats at the tables. Song Pearl wasn't sure about Gao Xiaoxia's family's financial situation, but there were quite a few relatives and friends at this wedding banquet, making the hall lively.
Tian Yue led Song Pearl around looking for a familiar place to sit. A couple around their age approached them. "Yue! We didn't see you earlier! Come sit over here. Our family is at that table."
Song Pearl nodded and smiled at the couple. Since Tian Yue hadn't taught her how to address them, she couldn't recall what to call them either; a simple smile served as her greeting.
"This is your Daughter-in-law! She looks really good!" The woman smiled as she held Song Pearl's hand, leading the two of them to a table where five or six people were already seated.
As expected, those at the table were all from Tian Yueniang's family, siblings and in-laws who hadn't seen each other for many years. However, they all recognized each other, and Tian Yue was no longer reserved.
The wedding banquet had not yet started, and sitting with these elders left Song Pearl with little to talk about. She felt a bit disinterested as she watched the guests continue to arrive.
After the brief interruption earlier, Gao Xiaoxia had regained her spirits. The red marks on her face were covered with concealer, and she stood beside the groom, warmly greeting each guest as they entered.
Song Pearl's gaze fell on the person next to her. She couldn't help but feel a sense of melancholy. People's hearts are hard to fathom; this seemingly upright man had divorced his wife to marry Gao Xiaoxia, yet when his ex-wife caused a scene earlier, he appeared completely indifferent.
Ban Chengdong might have sensed Song Pearl's gaze; when he turned to look at her with a smile in his eyes, he paused for a moment before pulling Gao Xiaoxia over toward her.
"Song Pearl, I really didn't expect you to come to our wedding," he said with a smile.
"What do you mean you didn't expect?" Gao Xiaoxia playfully glanced at Ban Chengdong and replied, "Pearl is my sister-in-law! We used to be colleagues and are still good friends; of course she would come!"
Song Pearl also smiled and stood up. "Congratulations to both of you."
"Pearl, why don't you go sit at that table?" Gao Xiaoxia affectionately linked arms with her, her face beaming with happiness. "That table has all our former colleagues; it would be great to catch up and have some fun. We'll join you after we finish toasting."
Song Pearl looked at Tian Yue, who nodded with a smile. "Go ahead; there are more young people over there. You won't be able to join in on the conversation here."
Gao Xiaoxia led Song Pearl to an upstairs private room. When they opened the door, the lively atmosphere inside quieted down upon seeing Song Pearl enter.
Gao Xiaoxia smiled and said, "Thank you all for coming to my wedding. You must drink until you're drunk and not leave!"
Song Pearl sat down next to Wang Shuzhi, facing Wan Jiang, whom she hadn't seen in a long time. There were also a few men and women around her age that she recognized but couldn't recall their names.
After taking their seats, a table of old colleagues chatted enthusiastically about various topics, but no one spoke to Song Pearl.
Song Pearl was naturally quiet and introverted, not fond of socializing, so she was used to this kind of atmosphere. However, it was strange that the usually cheerful and optimistic Wan Jiang was speaking very little.
Song Pearl glanced at Wan Jiang several times out of curiosity. She had always had a good impression of him; he was an ambitious person who dared to dream and take action.
"Why is Wan Jiang looking so gloomy?" Song Pearl quietly asked Wang Shuzhi, who was loudly discussing something just moments ago but had now fallen silent.
"Oh, he recently lost a fortune in business. It's normal for him to be in a bad mood," Wang Shuzhi replied nonchalantly.
"What do you mean lost a fortune?" Song Pearl asked, somewhat surprised.
"He got a batch of counterfeit raw materials, losing all the money he earned over the years. Plus, because he was selling counterfeit goods, his factory got shut down and auctioned off."
"How could this happen?" Song Pearl didn't know what to say.
"It was a moment of carelessness; he fell into someone else's trap," Wang Shuzhi looked at Song Pearl with a strange expression. "This has a lot to do with Qing Group. Qing Wenyu set a trap to reclaim his land, and Wan Jiang easily walked right into it!"
He finished with a cold laugh.
Song Pearl's face suddenly flushed, as if she had done something shameful.
"I'm sorry, I don't know," she said to Wan Jiang.
As soon as she said this, the people at the table felt a bit awkward. Wan Jiang waved his hand at her, "It has nothing to do with you. It's just business competition. That factory was something I fought for from Hongqing, so it's normal for Qing Wenyu to take it back. You don't need to feel guilty."
He raised his glass and drank it all in one go.
Song Pearl gradually realized that Gao Xiaoxia had set up a trap for her, and the meal became oppressive and lengthy.
After the meal, Song Pearl surprisingly felt a cold sweat on her back. In the eyes of these people, she clearly felt that she was no longer one of them, even though they were still friendly and kind towards her.
Song Pearl waited for Tian Yue to get into the car with her. Tian Yue seemed to be in a great mood, smiling brightly at Song Pearl as if they were meeting for the first time.
"Pearl, you must come over for dinner tomorrow. I’ll prepare some delicious food for you. If Qing Wenyu doesn't have time, just come by yourself," Tian Yue said.
"Okay," Song Pearl agreed. Her mother-in-law had always treated her well, but she rarely went to accompany her.
"Just now, an old friend gave me a secret recipe for having a baby. Starting tomorrow, I'll cook according to her method so you two can try to give me a big fat grandson this year!"
No wonder Tian Yue was in such a good mood; it turned out she was happy about this matter. Why did she suddenly bring it up?
Although they had been married for two years, Song Pearl couldn't help but blush.
The rain continued to fall steadily, making the ground somewhat slippery. Although there weren't many cars on the road, Song Pearl still didn't drive too fast.
A truck sped past her from behind but then slowed down, blocking her path at a leisurely pace. Song Pearl honked several times, but the truck neither sped up nor moved aside.
A sense of unease crept into her mind; the gloomy atmosphere and following closely behind a truck felt unsafe. She pressed the accelerator to overtake, but just then, the truck suddenly changed lanes.
Panicking, Song Pearl slammed on the brakes and quickly turned the steering wheel. The front of her car brushed against the back of the truck as it slid to one side, but at that moment, another car that had also intended to change lanes came roaring in.
With a loud crash, it collided with her car at high speed. In that instant, Song Pearl's mind went blank; she could only throw herself over Tian Yue to protect him. The other car accelerated toward them, and it seemed her car would be sent flying.
Her vehicle jolted violently and slid sideways, while the other car crashed hard into the truck that was changing lanes. Both vehicles emitted smoke as they came to a stop not far behind Song Pearl's car.
Song Pearl lifted her head and could feel her heart racing wildly. Tian Yue was unharmed under her protection, but his face was pale.
"What happened?" They looked through the window at the two cars that had collided behind them. The front of the other car was crumpled, and the truck was tilted to one side.
"Is this a death wish?" Tian Yue patted his chest, muttering, "Thank goodness I haven't done anything harmful!"
Song Pearl reached for the car door but found it wouldn't open. "Our car must have been deformed from the impact," she said, kicking the door several times without success.
"Pearl, you're bleeding from your head!" Tian Yue suddenly shouted, pointing at Song Pearl. "Quick, call an ambulance!"
Before they could make a call, an ambulance arrived with its siren blaring. The people in the other car were injured more severely, while the taxi driver seemed to be fine.
Song Pearl and Tian Yue stayed in the car, waiting for the rescuers to come and open the door to pull them out.
"I'm fine, I'm fine!" Tian Yue grabbed the medical personnel, "Quick, get her on the ambulance. She must have hit her head while protecting me; we can't let her have any aftereffects!"
"With this much blood, don't move!" The nurse came over and pressed Song Pearl onto the stretcher.
Song Pearl felt nothing at all; if they hadn't mentioned her bleeding, she wouldn't even know she was in pain.
She closed her eyes and listened to the nurse beside her, "Her heart rate, there’s blood all over her head and face; she must be seriously injured. It's really strange that she has managed to hold on this long without fainting and could even walk out of the car by herself."
"Is that lady okay? It seems like she isn't hurt anywhere!"
"The one driving Car is seriously injured; driving that fast is just asking for trouble. I wonder if there's still hope for them?"
The ambulance whizzed away, and a late-arriving Qing Wenyu could only make it in time to see the accident scene. The traffic police were maintaining order and taking notes.
"This Song Pearl, after driving for several years, still makes people uneasy!" He got out of the car and cursed Song Pearl harshly, his gaze fixed on the two crashed vehicles. (To be continued...)
