The onlookers were buzzing with discussions.
"This car is quite lucky; the driver is not simple either. They managed to slide out; otherwise, they would have been crushed between two cars."
"Yeah! Fortunately, they almost ended up in the ditch."
"Car accidents are everywhere! It seems like they just wanted to overtake!"
"The culprit is that truck, right? The traffic police should take action; such trucks shouldn't be allowed in the city center..."
Listening to these discussions and seeing the tragic scene, Qing Wenyu realized this was not a simple accident. There were several cars involved, and the traffic police were taking photos and documenting everything. There was still a lot to handle. He already knew that Song Pearl's injuries were not serious, so he stayed at the scene.
After a series of checks and photographs, the nurse wrapped a layer of gauze around Song Pearl's head. "It's nothing serious; just a cut. There's no major issue."
"No major issue? Please wrap it carefully; I don't want any scars!" Tian Yue reminded from the side.
"I can't guarantee that," the nurse glanced at her. "You really care for your daughter as a mother."
Hearing this, Song Pearl couldn't help but smile slightly.
Song Pearl and Tian Yue encountered Qing Wenyu in the hospital corridor.
"Mom, are you both okay?"
"We're fine. Why did you come so late? It's just that Pearl got a little hurt," Tian Yue pushed her son closer to her. "Go support your wife; if it weren't for her protecting me, I would have been the one injured!"
"I'm fine too. I heard the people in that car behind us collided hard; I wonder if we still need to go to the traffic police to give a statement?"
"From what I see at the scene, your car bears no responsibility," Qing Wenyu walked beside Song Pearl. "What was the situation like at that time? Please tell me in detail."
"At that time..." Song Pearl patted her head, feeling her mind was a blur. "I can't remember!"
"I remember clearly that the truck slowly crawled in front of us like a turtle. Pearl wanted to overtake it, but unexpectedly, the truck changed lanes too. Then a car behind crashed into us, and Pearl lunged forward to protect me..."
Tian Yue, recalling the incident, still felt a lingering fear and turned pale. "If I had known, I would have just given a gift and skipped this wedding!"
"Who did you meet at the wedding?" Qing Wenyu asked.
"I met some relatives from my hometown, your distant uncle and aunt..." Tian Yue chuckled again. "This time at the wedding, it was quite rewarding; it's been years since we sat together and talked! Also, your distant uncle has a son who graduated this year but hasn't found a job yet. He wants to work with you, so please arrange a suitable position for him. I've already promised him!"
Qing Wenyu nodded in agreement and asked, "Did you only meet those relatives from your hometown?"
"I met some other people too. Pearl wasn't at my table; Xiao Xia took her to another table. When I just got out of the car, I even encountered a woman causing trouble..."
By this time, they were already in the car. Tian Yue was sharing what happened at the wedding with Qing Wenyu while Song Pearl sat quietly in the back. Although she didn't speak, she couldn't help but smile at Tian Yue's stories; it turned out that Qing Wenyu also enjoyed hearing these family gossip!
"Did you run into your former colleague? Did you see Wan Jiang?" Qing Wenyu suddenly asked.
"Yeah," Song Pearl replied with a single word.
"The car that crashed into you from behind was Wan Jiang's," Qing Wenyu said.
Song Pearl saw the coldness in Qing Wenyu's deep eyes through the rearview mirror.
"After I went to the hospital, I first went to see him; he's still unconscious," Qing Wenyu continued. "I'll drop you off at home and then go check on him again. Maybe he intentionally crashed into your car!"
"Impossible!" Song Pearl straightened up with a tense face. "Wan Jiang is not that kind of person!"
"How is it impossible?" Qing Wenyu glanced at Song Pearl. "His factory is struggling and he owes a lot of money, but he blames it all on me. Meeting you at the banquet might have sparked an impulsive idea for him to take drastic measures!"
"I don't believe it; I should have gone to visit him!" Song Pearl held her forehead. Although she didn't feel pain and tests like X-rays and MRIs showed nothing wrong, her head felt somewhat heavy, likely due to the violent impact.
"Look at this, go home and rest well! If that person really crashed into us on purpose, they deserve it," Tian Yue comforted Song Pearl and said to Qing Wenyu, "Come stay at my place; it's inconvenient for Pearl to cook by herself like this."
Qing Wenyu turned the car towards her parents' house, dropped them off, and left without a moment's pause.
At home, Qing Yuansheng was fiddling with some grass when he opened the door and saw the disheveled pair. Surprised, he looked towards the roadside by the door and asked, "What happened? You just went to a wedding; how did the car end up like this? Where's the car?"
"It's a blessing that no one was hurt; who cares about the car!" Tian Yue supported Song Pearl as they entered. "Pearl can't drive that car anymore; you need to buy her a new one."
"Okay, okay! Let's get inside and rest first," Qing Yuansheng eagerly replied, walking ahead to open the door for them.
Song Pearl felt a bit overwhelmed; she must be hallucinating from dizziness. How could Qing Yuansheng be so nice? His demeanor was like that of a kind father.
In her memory, Qing Yuansheng had always appeared cold and tall, with a sharp tongue. He spoke to Qing Wenyu in a commanding tone. She glanced gratefully at Qing Yuansheng before entering the bedroom she shared with Qing Wenyu.
"You should lie down for a bit," Tian Yue said. "I'll talk with Wen Yu. You two can stay here; our house is spacious anyway."
Song Pearl nodded and leaned back on the bed.
After Tian Yue closed the door and left, she hurried to the vanity, gently unwrapping the bandage around her forehead. She had bumped her head against the car door, but by now, the wound on her forehead had healed, and there were no scars under the bandage.
Although her head still felt dizzy, she clearly remembered controlling the car with her mind when blood was flowing from her head. In that brief moment, it was enough for them to avoid the collision; otherwise, both she and Tian Yue would have been doomed.
She wondered if there was any connection between the truck ahead and the car behind—was it coincidence or an accident? Resting her chin on her hand, she pondered whether this incident had anything to do with Song Zhenbao.
Qing Wenyu's car was driven by Wan Jiang. She couldn't believe Wan Jiang would do something so reckless.
Slowly, she rewrapped the bandage around her head, restoring her injured appearance.
"I finally have my own memories," Song Pearl murmured. "And I can control my thoughts too; I remember everything that just happened. Could it be because I hit my head..."
She touched her head and lay back down on the bed.
Qing Wenyu returned home early in the evening. The car accident had been dealt with, allowing Song Pearl to focus on recovering without worrying about those matters.
“How is Wan Jiang?”
Song Pearl's dinner was brought to the bedroom by Qing Wenyu, and she picked up her chopsticks and asked first.
“He's out of danger but hasn't woken up yet. We'll wait for news tomorrow. It seems that this person was determined to take you all down with him,” Qing Wenyu said, sitting by the bed, having already concluded his retaliatory intentions.
“Did you check his car? Was there something wrong with it? I don’t think he’s that kind of person.”
“I’ve already asked about that; there were no issues with the car before the accident,” Qing Wenyu said, bringing food to her mouth. “Don’t think about others; it’s more important for you to recover.”
Song Pearl's mind flashed back to the scene when Song Zhenbao was hospitalized, and she felt a wave of discomfort. She glanced at Qing Wenyu and opened her mouth to eat the food he offered.
Although Song Pearl insisted she was fine, Tian Yue still made her lie in bed for two days.
When Wu Qiang arrived, Song Shiting and Liu Cuiying also came, along with some relatives and colleagues who brought things to visit. The usually quiet yard was filled with guests.
Qing Yuansheng sat with Wu Qiang for half an hour drinking tea before leaving. Tian Yue busily attended to the visitors and seemed in good spirits.
“What bad luck to have a car accident! If I had known, you should have come with us back to our hometown; none of this would have happened!” Liu Cuiying said as she entered.
Song Zhenbao smiled apologetically at Tian Yue and nudged her arm, signaling her to be mindful of her words. However, Liu Cuiying paid no attention as she sat down in Song Pearl's room.
“It’s not a big deal; it’s probably just a trial in life,” Song Pearl said, leaning on the bed with a smile in her eyes as she looked at Song Zhenbao.
“As long as you’re okay!” Song Zhenbao replied warmly, her demeanor dignified and sweet, but her words carried a hint of coldness, sounding somewhat admonishing. “Now that Qing Wenyu is at a crucial period in his career development, you’d better go out less and not cause him any trouble. Because of your situation, the project has been delayed quite a bit!”
"I know." Song Pearl did not refute; she looked at Song Zhenbao and obediently agreed.
Song Zhenbao did not expect her words to have such a soft response, as if they were hitting cotton. Song Pearl was surprisingly cooperative and obedient, leaving her somewhat stunned.
"We can't avoid going out just because there might be traffic accidents, right? Haven't you been to the construction site since you were discharged?" Seeing her in a daze, Song Pearl asked with a smile.
"That incident has already been investigated and found to be no accident; someone deliberately tampered with things near the construction shed, which caused it to collapse. You and Aunt Tian were also targeted." Song Zhenbao lowered her eyes, seemingly feeling guilty. "This year, Wen Yu and I have stirred up some interests while trying to buy land, which has implicated you!"
She then raised her eyes to observe Song Pearl's reaction.
Song Pearl's expression remained calm as she replied lightly, "I grew up here and believe that the local people are honest and straightforward. Even if they have grievances, they would find legitimate ways to resolve them instead of risking their lives."
"They wouldn't go to extremes?" Song Zhenbao laughed. "You're too naive, aren't you? Have you forgotten a few years ago when you accompanied Qing Wenyu and got trapped on the mountain for several days? If Dad hadn't gone up to look for you, who knows how long it would have taken for you to come down! So, one must always be cautious of others; pay attention in the future."
Song Zhenbao's words were righteous and powerful, appearing genuinely concerned for her sister.
"Pearl, don't take Treasure's words the wrong way; everything she says is for your own good. You can't think too highly of others." Liu Cuiying added, "You two are so troublesome that your dad and I can't feel at ease going back. We've already discussed it; I'll go home myself, and let Song Shiting stay here to take care of you sisters."
"Oh?" Song Pearl was somewhat puzzled. Was it Song Zhenbao who requested that Song Shiting stay? What else did she want to do? (To be continued)
