Unexpectedly, Hong Xinran and Qing Wenyu were staying at the same hotel. Song Pearl felt a bit relieved as she hung up the phone, her heart calming slightly as she waited for Hong Xinran's call.
She knew that with Hong Xinran's straightforward and efficient style, she would likely respond within ten minutes. In fact, it didn't take that long before Hong Xinran called.
"You guessed right; luckily I got there in time... The room door wouldn't open, so I called the hotel staff... Qing Wenyu is sleeping soundly under the covers, but—"
She paused, and Song Pearl's heart suddenly raced. On the other end, she continued,
"I can't wake him up no matter what. I don't know if it's alcohol poisoning... Don't worry, I've already contacted the hospital..."
Before Song Pearl could express her gratitude, Hong Xinran hung up, repeatedly assuring her to stay calm. Song Pearl felt no sense of relief as she put down the phone because she was still uncertain about Qing Wenyu's condition and what that pill was!
She called back to remind her, "Xinran, check Qing Wenyu's drinking cup and his stomach contents..."
"I'm more professional at this than you," Hong Xinran replied.
Only then did Song Pearl feel a bit reassured; having such a good friend was her fortune.
After dawn, Song Pearl didn't have time to rush to the city where Qing Wenyu was located. She received a call from the Ecological Aquaculture Farm, informing her that several crocodiles and wolves ordered by Song Zhenbao had arrived and needed her to arrange a placement location.
"Where's the manager of the Ecological Aquaculture Farm? Shouldn't he be responsible for these matters?" Song Pearl asked the staff member who notified her; she wasn't familiar with this number.
"That's how it is," came the reply. "Your company provided your contact information; Song Zhenbao made it clear. We’ve had a tough time on the road for several hours, and we hope you can understand and accept these animals so we can find a place to rest."
The tired voice carried a hint of pleading, and Song Pearl had no choice but to agree. When she arrived, the staff from the Ecological Aquaculture Farm were gathered around several large trucks.
People sent by the Animal Husbandry Research Institute were also watching.
"Isn't it dangerous to put this Big Guy's crocodile into the Fish Pond?"
"There probably won't be any tourists coming to fish anymore!"
"What fish are we even talking about? As long as the fish can be eaten by them, that's good enough! What about the Fish Fry we've been researching for breeding?"
"What to do? Serve it cold!" a young researcher said sulkily. "Life is precious, we should hurry up and pack our things back to the Provincial Capital! If we get swallowed by wolves in this remote countryside, it won't be worth it!"
Song Pearl looked at the several containers filled with massive creatures and felt a bit overwhelmed. She dialed Song Zhenbao's number and shouted, "What the hell are you doing? Why did you bring so many crocodiles and wolves here for me to deal with! This is a Resort, surrounded by residential areas, not a wild mountain or an island! Do you have a breeding permit?"
After shouting, she heard no response from the other end. She called out again, "Song Zhenbao!"
"Song Pearl, you're such an idiot! Since they've already been delivered, if you can't handle it, just return them!" Song Zhenbao cursed as soon as she spoke, her voice heavy and lacking its usual sweetness. "Qing Wenyu is in the hospital for some reason, and I have to take care of him. I can't rush back!"
"You..." Song Pearl was about to say something when the call was abruptly disconnected.
"You must be Song Pearl?" The delivery person approached her. "Since you're here, we'll leave this to you. Please arrange for someone to unload the cargo; we're going to find a place to rest."
"No way," Song Pearl said, feeling upset after being scolded as she glared at the drivers. "We can't accept these shipments."
"Can't accept?" The group stared at her in disbelief, their expressions incredulous. "Are you kidding? We brought this all the way here; we’re not taking it back. You figure it out!"
They didn't wait for Song Pearl's agreement and walked away decisively, making it clear that since it had already been delivered, they would have to accept it regardless.
"Pearl, what should we do?" The manager of the Ecological Aquaculture Farm looked helplessly at Song Pearl along with several staff members. "These creatures are quite fierce; should we release them or keep them in pens?"
"I'll take a look!" Song Pearl took a deep breath to calm herself.
She approached a vehicle and had someone open a compartment. Inside, several large cages were stacked on top of each other, each containing crocodiles that were three to five meters long and sealed shut.
After observing for a moment, she instructed them to close the compartment and lock it. Then she walked toward the back of the vehicle and said to those around her:
"Open the compartment with the wolves."
The situation in this compartment was similar to that of the crocodiles; wolves of various sizes were tightly bound in cages, looking fierce yet somewhat pitiful.
Song Pearl stared for a long time before having the cages unloaded and the ropes binding the wolves loosened.
"Although they won't harm people for now, we still need to be cautious," she advised.
As soon as the ropes were loosened, the wolves climbed up the wire mesh, glaring out with hungry eyes. This startled the staff, causing them to step back several paces.
"Feed these wolves something; they're starving," Song Pearl instructed those nearby.
"What should we feed them?"
"Go get some pork from the hotel!" Song Pearl looked at the cages and added, "Open all the ones with wolves and make sure they are well-fed."
"What about those crocodiles? Don't they need feeding?"
"The crocodiles have been sedated; leave them for now!"
"Anesthesia has been administered!" The manager of the Ecological Aquaculture Farm glanced at Song Pearl and arranged for someone to handle it.
Soon, two tricycles arrived from the hotel, loaded with chunks of meat. When the Keeper poured the cut meat at the entrance of the cage, the wolves seemed to have consumed an overdose of stimulants, jumping around frantically as if they were possessed by some kind of mania, standing up and pawing at the wire fence.
The wild display made it dangerous to approach; they could only kindly toss the meat within reach of the wolves' claws and then quickly retreat.
"Who would dare to raise these things!" one Keeper whispered, patting his chest as he watched the wolves devour the meat. "With this many, it's not an Ecological Aquaculture Farm anymore; it's a zoo!"
Song Pearl fell into deep thought. Wolves and crocodiles could be raised, but Song Zhenbao had not provided enough space. The wildlife at the Ecological Aquaculture Farm had yet to be dealt with, and there was also a fish pond. After placing crocodiles in this fish pond, the previously developed fish fry would need to be relocated.
If she had enough time, none of this would be a problem. However, when she was not present, the staff here would inevitably be flustered and might even encounter danger.
Should she stay or leave?
Song Zhenbao really knew how to get himself into trouble! Was there really no way to visit Qing Wenyu? She wondered how he was doing.
News of the wolves arriving at the Ecological Aquaculture Farm quickly spread. Ani squeezed over and asked, "Sister, are we going to open a Wolf Park on the mountain in the future?"
Song Pearl nodded.
"It looks like we have to move; what if some wolves come down the mountain? This is no joke," whispered villagers who had not yet moved away.
"We really have to move; we won't be able to raise chickens, ducks, cattle, or sheep anymore. Would you still dare to go up the mountain?"
"The Qing Family is truly ruthless; they only care about making money for themselves. They never consider the interests of us ordinary villagers!" someone said resentfully. "People like them will surely face consequences!"
The murmurs reached Song Pearl's ears, and she could only pretend not to hear them. She quickly devised a plan for the arrangements, sending someone to handle the animals in the cages, and had the manager of the Ecological Aquaculture Farm come over to reassign everyone’s responsibilities, ensuring their safety.
“Dad, have you ever raised crocodiles?” After everything was arranged, Song Pearl finally asked the already arrived Song Shiting.
“I’ve only raised fish, not crocodiles!” Song Shiting chuckled foolishly. “But don’t worry, I’ve done some research these past two days. I have a bit of experience now.”
“That’s good.” Song Pearl nodded. “Thank you for your hard work, Dad!” Although it wasn’t her intention to keep Song Shiting there, she still felt a bit guilty. His health wasn’t good, and she didn’t want him to overexert himself.
Song Zhenbao suddenly asking Song Shiting to help with raising crocodiles puzzled Song Pearl. Was it because Song Shiting was too idle at home?
“It’s not hard at all!” Song Shiting said with a smile, his brows relaxing. “I’m very happy to help you guys out. Besides, living in the city is really boring!”
Is that really the case?
While Song Pearl was chatting with Song Shiting, Wu Qiang also came to her side.
“Qing Yuansheng called me. Qing Wenyu was hospitalized due to feeling unwell while on a business trip. Do you want to hurry over and see him?” he said. “He usually looks so strong and healthy; how could he suddenly fall ill?”
Song Pearl moved her lips and said helplessly, “I really want to go see him right away, but I’ve been left with a mountain of work!” She smiled slightly. “But Hong Xinran should be fine there!”
“Although…” Wu Qiang paused. “I don’t want anything to happen to that kid! You should go take care of him! You don’t need to worry about the Ecological Aquaculture Farm. Just handling a hunting ground is enough; I can keep an eye on it, plus I have help!”
Song Pearl followed his gaze to Zhang Yunye, who was standing not far away. He was watching the busy staff with a serious expression, lacking his usual bright smile.
For the first time, Song Pearl saw such a profound expression on Zhang Yunye's face and couldn’t help but be taken aback.
“Zhang Yunye has been by your side protecting you for so long, he is familiar with everything you know, so you don't have to worry!” Wu Qiang said with a smile, unaware of her unusual demeanor.
“Alright!” Song Pearl lowered her head in thought, “Thank you, Dad!”
“Don't mention it!” Wu Qiang chuckled mischievously, “I still owe Qing Wenyu money and favors! Consider it working for him!”
Wu Qiang's joke was not funny at all, but Song Pearl thought of Qing Wenyu's kindness because of his words. He had very little, yet he always worked quietly, even when he was not trusted and was doubted.
And now...
“Sister, I also want to go see Brother Qing with you. I can help out too!” Ani, who had been silent beside her, hugged her arm and said with a hint of pleading, “I'm scared of those wolves on the mountain…”
“It’s fine to let Ani come with you; it’s good to have someone to look after you on the way,” Wu Qiang agreed with Ani's suggestion.
Song Pearl initially did not want to agree because she knew Ani had mental health issues in the past. With her by her side, she wasn't sure who would take care of whom!
However, seeing Ani's hopeful eyes, she came up with another idea; perhaps she could take Ani to the hospital for a check-up as well. (To be continued…)
