Tie Zhu entered the Small Building carrying Wang Shunliu, which had previously been a small restaurant. 0

After entering, Tie Zhu saw that the room was cluttered with some tables and benches. 0

Directly opposite the main door was a Counter, on which were scattered some wine jars and various odds and ends. It seemed that this restaurant had been completely ransacked by the Japanese, leaving no useful items behind. 0

Whenever the Japanese occupied a place, their first act was to loot. They were as ruthless as bandits, showing no humanity, taking everything from gold and silver jewelry to livestock and poultry. Their country was too impoverished. 0

Tie Zhu first placed Wang Shunliu on the ground and wandered around the first floor. He noticed the Counter, which could serve as a decent hiding spot, shielding both Wang Shunliu and himself from being seen by outsiders. However, there were pros and cons to hiding behind the Counter. If any Japanese came in and discovered them, it would only lead to death. After some thought, Tie Zhu decided against hiding behind the Counter. 0

Next to the Counter was a small door leading to the Kitchen. 0

Tie Zhu cautiously entered with his gun drawn. The kitchen was not large; upon entering, he could see everything at a glance. The room was empty with nothing to hide behind. After taking a quick look, Tie Zhu turned around and left. 0

The first floor did not seem very safe. After assessing the situation, he concluded that he should go upstairs. 0

Struggling to drag Wang Shunliu up to the second floor, Tie Zhu found himself panting and reflecting: usually, Shunliu Brother looked quite thin, but he didn't expect him to be so heavy! 0

The gunfire outside had ceased, and Wang Shunliu had fallen into a deep sleep, completely unaware. His chest rose and fell steadily, indicating he was merely asleep. Tie Zhu reached out to check under Wang Shunliu's nose; there was breath coming in and out, and it seemed he really was just sleeping. 0

After staying on the second floor for a short while, Tie Zhu thought again and stealthily made his way back downstairs, sneaking around like a thief. He pushed open the front door and cautiously peeked outside; the street was still deserted with no one in sight. 0

Around the corner lay the body of a Japanese. Tie Zhu first collected the identification insignia from the Japanese Soldier. This item would serve as proof of identity for the Japanese, similar to how a soldier from the Kuomintang would have identification on their chest. Holding onto this would count as military merit (after searching for a long time, he still didn't know how military merit was calculated by the Kuomintang at that time). 0

The two Japanese who had been handling a Machine Gun earlier had left it on the ground; a Type 92 Heavy Machine Gun had just been disassembled by them. 0

Tie Zhu picked up the Machine Gun, leaving its mount aside since he couldn't lift such a heavy item all at once (the empty Type 92 Heavy Machine Gun weighed 27.6 kg; its mount weighed 27.7 kg). 0

Struggling somewhat, he carried the Heavy Machine Gun upstairs and placed it at the stairway entrance. Then he went back downstairs to retrieve the mount as well. At that moment, gunfire erupted again nearby, this time even more intense with numerous people engaged in combat. 0

In a hurry, he returned to the second floor with the mount for the Machine Gun. He also brought up an ammunition box and a simple repair toolbox left behind by the Japanese. These items were heavier than the machine gun itself, making it quite difficult for Tie Zhu to carry them. 0

On the second floor, Tie Zhu looked at the Heavy Machine Gun and its iron mount with some frustration. He knew how to use it from training in basic training but had no idea how to assemble it, leaving him feeling quite confused. 0

Tie Zhu first placed the stand against the wall corner on the side of the stairs on the second floor, then put the Machine Gun on the rack. After fiddling for a while, he finally discovered the slots and mounting brackets. 0

Without a wrench, Tie Zhu had no choice but to tighten a few screws by hand. Fortunately, Japanese did not take the screws out and carelessly put them in his pocket; instead, they were placed in the toolbox. Otherwise, Tie Zhu would have had no way to assemble the Machine Gun. 0

The Machine Gun was secured somewhat awkwardly, with the muzzle drooping slightly and some wobbling. Without a wrench, Tie Zhu could not tighten the screws properly and had to make do with it. 0

He took out a belt of ammunition (the 92 Type Heavy Machine Gun ammunition is in belts, not individual rounds), found the feed port, and loaded the bullets. Standing next to the Machine Gun, Tie Zhu felt that standing up was too high to control it properly; he could only crouch down to manage the Heavy Machine Gun effectively. 0

Tie Zhu scanned his surroundings and had an idea. He took all the bullets from the ammo box and then placed the toolbox underneath him. Sitting on top, he found that it was just the right height to comfortably operate the Machine Gun. 0

After getting the Machine Gun ready, Tie Zhu quickly ran downstairs and closed the front door on the first floor. The gunfire outside was getting closer. He couldn't leave Wang Shunliu behind to escape alone; he didn't know whether it was Japanese or Kuomintang Soldier approaching. He could only stay on the second floor and wait for his brother to wake up before thinking of a plan. 0

After securing the front door, Tie Zhu checked all the windows on the first floor and then quickly ran upstairs to check all the windows on the second floor as well. Once he confirmed that they were all closed, he moved Wang Shunliu closer to him. After carefully observing his surroundings, he knocked over several square tables scattered on the second floor, positioning their surfaces toward the stairway entrance to block off Wang Shunliu and the Heavy Machine Gun, leaving a narrow gap for aiming. 0

The height of the tables was just right; they did not obstruct Tie Zhu's line of sight but could shield his body. He wasn't sure why he felt compelled to do this; it just seemed safer. 0

Once everything was done, Tie Zhu nodded in satisfaction. Clearly pleased with his defensive setup, he clapped his hands and moved behind the table, gripping the Machine Gun, nervously aiming at the stairway entrance. 0

The gunfire outside was now very close, indicating that a battle between the Nationalist Army and Japanese Soldier was occurring nearby. Tie Zhu appeared quite tense, his hand trembling slightly as he held onto the Machine Gun. 0

Outside, several disheveled Japanese Soldier ran out from the street. 0

"Baka! Matsushima-kun has fallen; our lure tactic has failed! Move quickly to another position!" 0

"Charge! The Japanese are right ahead; there aren't many of them! Don't let them escape!" 0

"Retreat! Retreat! There are too many Chinese. Split up and fall back; hold your positions! You two stay behind and engage them; everyone else follow me!" 0

"Hi!" 0

On the street, several panicked Japanese, looking disheveled, stood at a Crossroads. A Japanese Soldier Sergeant, looking at the body of a fallen comrade killed by Wang Shunliu, appeared very frustrated. 0

They are a squad of soldiers (equivalent to a Chinese military section, with each squad consisting of 13 members, including a Squad Leader, 4 Machine Gunners, and 8 Riflemen). There is one Light Machine Gun, organized into a four-person team (a leader, a shooter, and two ammunition bearers). Originally, they planned to establish a Machine Gun Position at this Crossroads, leaving two people to guard the Machine Gun Position while the others would lure the enemy, drawing the Chinese Soldiers to this intersection and then using the Machine Gun to kill them. However, when they returned, the Machine Gunner had already been killed, and the Heavy Machine Gun was nowhere to be found. 0

Outside the house, the voices of Japanese Soldiers and shouts from the Nationalist Army could be heard. Tie Zhu could not understand what the Japanese Soldiers were saying, but he was extremely nervous at that moment; his legs trembled slightly, and cold sweat began to bead on his forehead. 0

The battle outside continued. Tie Zhu gripped the Machine Gun tightly, not daring to relax for even a moment. 0

“Oshima-kun, let’s go inside!” 0

“Hi!” 0

Two Japanese Soldiers pushed open the door of the tavern and cautiously walked in. 0

The layout of the first floor was clear at a glance: a living room, a Counter, and a door leading to the Kitchen, along with some scattered tables. There was no place to hide. 0

The two Japanese Soldiers exchanged glances and slowly approached the Counter from either side, their guns aimed at both sides of the Counter, appearing very tense. 0

Behind the Counter was empty; there was nothing there. A layer of dust covered the surface. The Japanese Soldiers let out long sighs of relief; their hands relaxed slightly on their guns, which drooped slightly. They signaled to each other and then slowly moved toward the Kitchen—one in front and one behind, covering each other. 0

The Kitchen had already been ransacked by the Japanese; there was nothing left—only some overturned Jars and scattered Firewood. It was completely bare, not even a grain of rice remained. 0

After entering the house, the Japanese Soldiers searched several places where they thought someone might be hiding. Confirming that the Kitchen was safe, they carefully checked the lobby on the first floor before closing all windows and locking the main door. They then began to cautiously ascend to the second floor. 0
