Hu Lian walked up to the second floor, which was even more spacious than the first. Near the street side, two walls had large holes near the corners, and the floor showed signs of an explosion, just like the first floor.
On the second floor, tables were oddly piled in a corner, forming a small enclosure. The surface of the tables was pockmarked with various shrapnel, likely from a grenade explosion.
Tie Zhu stood excitedly in the corner, with the muzzle of a Japanese Type 92 Heavy Machine Gun peeking out between two tables.
Hu Lian approached to take a closer look. This was right; the muzzle on the corpse of the Japanese Soldier at the stairway couldn't have been fired by a rifle; it had to be from a Type 92 Heavy Machine Gun.
He patted Tie Zhu on the shoulder, feeling pleased. "Not bad, Tie Zhu. You managed to capture this? How did you get it?"
Tie Zhu grinned and pointed to Wang Shunliu lying on the ground nearby. "Just down at the entrance, there were two Japanese setting up this machine gun. Shunliu Brother and I circled around from behind. Shunliu Brother took out one Japanese Soldier with his knife while I shot to scare off another, and then this thing became ours."
At that moment, Hu Lian noticed that there was indeed a soldier lying on the ground who appeared unharmed and without any bloodstains, looking as if he were asleep. "Is he Wang Shunliu?"
Tie Zhu nodded. "Shunliu Brother is amazing. Today on the battlefield, he personally killed four enemies, and with that last one, that's five in total. I only managed to kill three, counting those two I just got, all thanks to Shunliu Brother's help; he taught me everything."
Hu Lian felt a surge of excitement; these two soldiers were good fighters. One regiment had suffered heavy losses from artillery and bayonet charges yet had only killed over a hundred enemies. Together, these two had taken down eight. He asked with some concern, "What happened to him?"
Tie Zhu scratched his head and shook it. "I don't know either; Shunliu Brother might have passed out after grappling with the enemy. He got hit on the head by one of those iron tools used by Japanese Soldiers."
"Xu Staff Officer! Xu Staff Officer! Come here; didn't you study medicine? Check on Wang Shunliu and see what's wrong with him!"
Xu Staff Officer came over, squatted down, felt Wang Shunliu's pulse, and checked his nose before slowly standing up. "It's nothing serious; he just fainted. He took a heavy blow to the head and is a bit disoriented. He'll be fine after some sleep."
Hu Lian sat in front of the machine gun to test it out but frowned. "Is this gun not secured properly?"
Tie Zhu smiled sheepishly. "We didn't have any tools earlier; I just twisted it on by hand."
"Xu Staff Officer, come help lift this gun downstairs. Our temporary command post will be set up here. Fire a signal flare so each battalion can send liaison officers to report on their situation."
"Yes!"
Tie Zhu endured various discomforts as he moved the two Japanese corpses aside, while three people carried the Machine Gun downstairs.
The Machine Gun was set up in front of the Counter on the first floor, and after Tie Zhu made a simple defensive fortification with several tables, Xu Staff Officer took a signal flare, had a couple of puffs of smoke outside the door, and leisurely fired the signal flare into the sky.
A red signal flare blossomed in the sky over Luodian. Although it was daytime, it was still clearly visible.
A Battalion Commander was leading over twenty men to attack a small outpost of the Japanese Army. He looked up at the signal flare and turned his head to shout to those behind him, “Little Erzi, are you dead? If you're not dead, go check if there's something going on with the Commander. Why did he come to town? If you see friendly troops on the way, call them over. Bring a couple more people; with our Commander's personality, he must have sent all the guards out.”
“Yes, Battalion Commander!”
······
The first to arrive at the tavern were not the Nationalist Army soldiers, but several Japanese Soldier sneaking over.
The Japanese Soldier were drawn by Xu Staff Officer's signal flare. They had originally been sniping from a nearby Small Building, and after seeing the signal flare, Japanese Corporal thought for a moment and brought four subordinates over.
Tie Zhu was sitting behind the Heavy Machine Gun, excitedly wiping down the Machine Gun, carefully cleaning every corner until it was spotless.
At this moment, Tie Zhu was very excited. The Commander, what a high-ranking official! Now safety depended on him; if he performed well, he might even enter the guard company and could hang up the Flower Mechanism. Moreover, according to what Brother Shun said, the food in the guard company was better than theirs. Most importantly, members of the guard company generally didn't have to go to battle!
Hu Lian and Xu Staff Officer were upstairs observing the terrain and battlefield situation.
“Xu Staff Officer, the enemy's forces are clearly insufficient. If I could have one more battalion, I could take down Luodian immediately!”
Xu Staff Officer nodded: “The execution capability of our troops this time and their fighting spirit are unprecedented!”
Hu Lian put down his binoculars and nodded: “This is not like the previous civil war; this is a war for our nation. Even if we die fighting to the last man, we will continue to battle against the Japanese. Victory ultimately belongs to us. When that day comes, we will raise our glasses in celebration. Haha!”
Outside the tavern, several Japanese Soldier exchanged furtive glances. One pointed upwards with his finger, indicating that there were people upstairs. The Japanese Corporal nodded and signaled to several other Japanese Soldier, leaving two at the door for vigilance while cautiously pushing open the tavern's large door with the other two.
As three Japanese Soldier pushed open the tavern's large door, they saw two tables standing directly opposite them with a Machine Gun aimed at the entrance. The dark muzzle of the gun pointed at them, causing several Japanese Soldier to be greatly alarmed and momentarily frozen in place by fear of the Machine Gun.
Tie Zhu was focused on cleaning his gun, completely immersed in his own fantasies, imagining a future where he would wear the Flower Mechanism and have enough to eat. At that moment, the door of the tavern was suddenly pushed open.
Tie Zhu looked up and saw three Japanese soldiers standing in front of him. They exchanged glances for about a second, and he reflexively pulled the trigger, firing the Heavy Machine Gun directly at them. The Japanese soldiers reacted quickly and also opened fire at Tie Zhu's position.
After a brief exchange of gunfire, each Japanese soldier managed to fire only one shot before being turned into Swiss cheese by the machine gun. Two shots hit the table, and one struck Tie Zhu in the shoulder.
After seeing the three Japanese soldiers killed, Tie Zhu let out a sigh of relief. He leaned against the counter, covering his wound with his hand, crying out in pain.
It hurt, really hurt. The penetrating power of the Japanese Type 38 Rifle was strong; the bullet passed through Tie Zhu's body, leaving a gaping wound that was bleeding profusely. His hands were already stained red with blood.
At that moment, a Japanese soldier appeared at the entrance of the tavern. He dashed out from beside the door, raised his gun, aimed, and fired in one smooth motion.
Tie Zhu was still holding his wound, staring blankly at the ceiling, unaware that someone had appeared at the door.
A crisp gunshot rang out as the bullet from the Japanese soldier struck Tie Zhu's head.
Tie Zhu felt a sharp pain in his head—very painful, even more so than when he was shot in the shoulder. He felt as if his soul was being torn apart.
Before the bullet hit him, time seemed to speed up; scenes from his past flashed before his eyes—his father, the village girls, and everything that had happened on the battlefield today raced through his mind like pages flipping quickly.
"Is it finally time to die? So this is what death feels like! How nice; I won't have to starve anymore or live in fear." This was Tie Zhu's last thought as he slowly closed his eyes.
