"Is this your gun?" 0

"Yes, Commander, this is my gun! I've been using this gun since I was a recruit!" 0

Hu Lian nodded, "Not bad, not bad. Can you tell me what the marks on this gun represent?" 0

"Report, Commander, every time I kill an enemy, I make a mark on the gun!" 0

Hu Lian stood up and walked back and forth beside Wang Shunliu, "You've killed so many enemies? Why are you still just an ordinary soldier?" 0

"Report, Commander, because during battles I usually stay at the back of the unit with a cold gun, so the number of enemies I kill is less than two, which means I don't have any achievements!" 0

"I see now. I understand. I'll remember your contributions. Now take care of your gun and come with me for a walk!" 0

"Yes! Commander!" Wang Shunliu nodded excitedly and quickly followed behind Hu Lian. 0

The fighting in the town was basically coming to an end. The Japanese troops retreating to Luodian numbered only a little over a hundred. After two or three hours of urban warfare, most had been taken down by Kuomintang soldiers at the cost of their lives. 0

The entire Luodian Town was in ruins, with hardly a complete building in sight. Every street was littered with the bodies of Nationalist Army soldiers and Japanese soldiers, but more prominently were the bodies of Nationalist Army soldiers in sky-blue military uniforms. 0

"Ah!" Hu Lian sighed, crouching down to tidy up the appearance of two Nationalist Army soldiers' bodies by the roadside. He closed their unseeing eyes and gave them a military salute before slowly leaving. 0

"They were all good soldiers! They fell on the path forward, facing bullets head-on!" 0

Wang Shunliu said nothing and silently followed behind Hu Lian. Having served for a longer time, he recognized almost half of the people in his unit. Many of the soldiers they encountered on the way were comrades he had greeted with smiles just that morning. 0

"Wang Shunliu, how many years have you been in the army?" 0

"About a year now. I used to work with the militia in my hometown, but then I quit and spent two years begging outside. The world is not peaceful; I had no choice but to join the army again!" 0

"Why did Militia run away?" 0

"They, sigh, they said it was Militia, but there's really no difference from bandits. I don't want to get involved with them." 0

"Sigh! It's a sin; sooner or later, I'll deal with those bastards. Go check ahead; it seems like there's still gunfire over there." 0

"Commander, you should probably not go. I'm the only one with you, and I'm afraid I can't protect you well. You should go back and rest while I scout ahead. How about that?" 0

Hu Lian adjusted his Flower Mechanism, opened the safety, and slung the gun over his shoulder: "Hah, do I need your protection? You must be thinking of your hometown's useless Militia's Commander. Just pay attention to yourself later; don't let me down. In my eyes, you're just a rookie. When I was fighting, you were still playing in the mud. Show me what you've got; let's see if you're a good soldier or a bad one!" 0

"Yes, Commander!" 0

Not far away, the Second Battalion Commander was frustratedly hiding behind a cover, spitting: "Damn it, this Japanese bone is really hard to chew. Do you have any good ideas?" 0

The twenty or so soldiers led by the Second Battalion Commander had now dwindled to just over ten, with eight soldiers sacrificed and two injured, yet they still couldn't take down the nearby Japanese position. 0

"Battalion Commander, how about I lead the brothers for another charge? What do you think?" 0

"Charge! Charge! Charge! All you know is to rush forward. Are you going to be a target for the Japanese? Can your shooting skills compare to theirs?" The Second Battalion Commander slapped the head of a fallen comrade beside him, looking extremely anxious. 0

Not far away at a three-way intersection's Corner Building, five or six Japanese Soldiers were hiding inside, with a Light Machine Gun blocking the entrance while the other Japanese Soldiers were upstairs continuously firing from the windows. The soldiers were shot dead before they could even approach the Corner Building. 0

"Li Erlengzi, what are you doing hiding here?" 0

Hu Lian walked to where the gunfire was coming from and saw the Second Battalion Commander angrily scolding his soldiers. 0

The Second Battalion Commander, in a fit of rage, turned around and shouted: "Don't you know how to call someone by their name? Is it you who called Li Erlengzi? Ahhh! That Commander, I didn't mean it; I really didn't mean it! Why are you here?" 0

The Second Battalion Commander was in a bad mood. When he heard someone call him "Li Erlengzi," he immediately got angry, but when he turned around and saw it was Hu Lian, he deflated. 0

"You still have quite the temper. Tell me, can I call you Li Erlengzi? Li Erlengzi!" 0

The Second Battalion Commander forced a bitter smile. "Sure, of course you can. Commander, if you call me Li Dalengzi, I’ll just have to accept it. That's your compliment to me!" 0

Hu Lian looked at the Second Battalion Commander. "Why do I feel like you're not complimenting me but mocking me instead? Can you speak properly? You look like you're about to explode." 0

"Commander, how could I dare to mock you? I'm speaking from the heart!" 0

He waved his hand. "Stop flattering me. Tell me what the situation is here!" 0

"Yes! Commander, at my three o'clock position, there's a Corner Building with a few Japanese soldiers inside that I haven't dealt with yet. I've also lost a few personnel, and it's really frustrating!" 0

"A few Japanese soldiers? Let me see where they are!" 0

"About five or six of them; I don't know the exact number, but they're right over there!" 0

The Second Battalion Commander led Hu Lian behind a shelter and cautiously poked his head out, pointing to the nearby Corner Building. 0

Hu Lian took a careful look through his binoculars. "Those Japanese soldiers picked a damn good spot. That building can see all three intersections; it's really hard to attack. Doesn't your battalion have mortars? Why not use them to shell it?" 0

"Commander, I don't even know where our gunners went, and with this chaos in Luodian, where can I find them?" 0

Wang Shunliu was hiding nearby, carefully observing the distant Small Building. He could vaguely see shadows moving inside, but it was too far away to make out clearly. 0

"Second Battalion Commander, can you provide me with some cover so I can advance about twenty meters to that position?" 0

Lowering his head, Wang Shunliu pointed to another Small Building not far from the intersection ahead. That building was about eighty meters away from the Corner Building and approximately twenty meters from the hiding spot of the Second Battalion Commander. However, it was an open area, and crossing it would risk being targeted by Japanese Soldiers. 0

The Second Battalion Commander turned his head and said, "What’s the matter? Do you have a plan? Twenty meters is not easy to cross. Look, I still have several soldiers' bodies lying over there; they were targeted by the Japanese just trying to cross this twenty meters!" 0

"Commander, can I borrow your binoculars?" 0

Hu Lian glanced at Wang Shunliu and handed over the binoculars. "Do you know how to use them?" 0

Wang Shunliu took the binoculars and looked through them with both eyes. This thing was indeed impressive; he could clearly see several exposed Japanese Soldiers in the Corner Building. 0

He positioned the binoculars upright and squinted one eye to carefully observe the Japanese Soldiers inside the building. 0

"Commander, I'm good now. Please give me some space; your position is better!" 0

Hu Lian shifted aside. "Are you planning to shoot from this far? Are you confident?" 0

Wang Shunliu didn’t lift his head but moved slightly to adjust his position, slowly pulling out his Rifle from behind. "Commander, I’m not very confident either. My family used to be hunters, and I’ve shot wild animals at this distance before; I don’t know if I can do it now." 0

As Wang Shunliu spoke, he carefully adjusted the Rifle's sights and aimed at a spot not far away. "Commander, I want to test the gun. You all step back a bit; if the Japanese Machine Gun sweeps over here, I’ll have somewhere to hide." 0

Hu Lian patted him on the shoulder. "Alright, stop trying to find ways to make me move back. When I was fighting, you were still nursing! If you're going to shoot, do it quickly; don’t dawdle like a woman!" 0

"Oh, okay!" 0
