"Hey, hey, hey, Tie Zhu, tell me what your relationship with our Commander is. I see our Commander treats you really well, even better than us. Look, he was chatting with you today; when I stood next to him, he didn't even talk to me."
Tie Zhu shook his head, "I don't have any relationship with the Commander."
"No relationship? No relationship and he treats you so well? I've heard from our friends that the Commander gave you two boxes of imported American canned food! If you have no relationship with him, how could he give you canned food? Our Battalion Commander hasn't even had it that many times! Can he really afford to give a big soldier like you something like that? Stop pretending and tell me what your relationship is!"
Little Liuzi crouched down, slowly moving along the street, his sneaky eyes scanning the surroundings from time to time while still trying to pry information from Tie Zhu, his tone filled with envy.
Tie Zhu held his gun and followed behind him, looking anxious to urge Little Liuzi on but hesitating. This Liuzi was a small figure in the camp; almost everyone in the unit knew him for his cliques. Despite his thin appearance, he was not weak in action.
Moreover, this guy seemed harmless but was quite cunning, often playing tricks behind people's backs and reporting on others.
People in the regiment hated him but also found him clever. In the eyes of the Company Commander and Battalion Commander, he wasn't considered a good soldier but not a bad one either. As long as there were leaders around, he worked harder than anyone else; once they left, his true nature would show.
Usually, this Liuzi liked to take small advantages but didn't have too much malice, so most soldiers didn't want to offend him and were too lazy to argue with him.
"I really have no relationship! Liuzi Brother, do you think I could fool you? I'm just a big soldier. If I had connections, I would have become an officer long ago; why would I still be a soldier? Hey, is Shunliu Brother's position far from us?"
"You've got a point. In this day and age, those with connections are all getting rich while we who have none are struggling. By the way, Wang Shunliu isn't far; we'll get there soon. It's just around the corner. Tie Zhu, have you eaten the canned food the Commander gave you? How does it taste? Is it beef or fish? I've heard American canned food is much tastier than Japanese canned food. Unfortunately, I've never had the chance to try it; I'm really envious of you. If only I could get recognized by the Commander for just one day and get a can!"
Tie Zhu wasn't foolish; he realized Liuzi's intentions were clear at this point—he wanted Tie Zhu to give him a box of canned food.
Tie Zhu actually didn't plan to help Liuzi out with the canned food; he wanted to save it for Shunliu Brother along with the cigarettes he had on him. But seeing Little Liuzi dawdling in front of him, Tie Zhu gritted his teeth and decided that in order to see Shunliu Brother sooner, he took out a box of canned food from his pocket and handed it over: "Liuzi Brother, I haven't eaten this can that the Commander sent me yet; you can take this one and try its taste!"
Liuzi quickly turned his head and, after seeing the can in Tie Zhu's hand, snatched it away, fearing that Tie Zhu might change his mind. He picked it up and examined it closely. "Tsk tsk, Tie Zhu, you see, this American product is indeed American. Just look at this can; even the box is more attractive than the Japanese ones. Brother Tie Zhu, I really appreciate it. I'll take this can. I see you're eager to find your Shunliu Brother, so let's hurry. If we get there and your Shunliu Brother has already left, won't we have made a wasted trip?"
Liuzi took the can and secretly rejoiced, knowing he had achieved his goal. He figured this foolish kid had nothing else of value on him. Liuzi gradually quickened his pace, speaking less than before, and walked noticeably faster. Occasionally, he would glance back to engage Wang Shunliu in conversation, hoping to squeeze out a bit more from him while wearing a happy smile.
Having learned from his previous experience, Tie Zhu had become much shrewder. Whenever Liuzi asked him something, he pretended to be clueless—either claiming he didn't know or nodding repeatedly. When Liuzi inquired about what else he had on him, Tie Zhu simply pulled out the remaining box of canned goods.
Despite asking several times along the way without getting any useful information, Liuzi eventually gave up and fell silent as they continued walking.
Tie Zhu followed behind quietly. Although he knew he had been tricked, he endured it for the sake of seeing Shunliu Brother sooner. After all, Luodian wasn't too big or too small; searching for someone here would take more than a day. Moreover, if Liuzi led him in circles around town and randomly pointed to a place claiming it was where Shunliu Brother was, Tie Zhu wouldn't have any grounds to argue—he couldn't just drag Commander and the others over to confirm if that was the right place.
Not far from the Corner Building, Liuzi pointed ahead. "Look, Tie Zhu, we're almost there! It's right over there. Let me tell you, just now your Shunliu Brother was incredible; he single-handedly shot a Japanese soldier's machine gunner from over a hundred meters away! Impressive, right?"
Tie Zhu nodded. "Of course my Shunliu Brother is impressive! Let's hurry over and take a look!" Tie Zhu was now very excited and wanted to rush out toward the direction Liuzi indicated but was pulled back by Liuzi.
"Look at you being so anxious! Follow me; you have no sense of caution at all. There are still quite a few remnants of the enemy in this town. Be careful and stay behind me! See how worried I am for you!"
Liuzi lectured Tie Zhu with a sense of pride as he held his gun and walked ahead. Turning down a small path, he pointed forward. "Do you see that building? That's the one! I just saw Wang Shunliu go inside."
Tie Zhu stood beside him and looked in the direction Liuzi pointed. After confirming the location, he immediately dashed forward without caring about Liuzi anymore and shouted in the street, "Shunliu Brother! Shunliu Brother! Where are you? It's me, Tie Zhu! Come out! The enemy has been dealt with!"
"Hey, you little rascal!" Liuzi felt annoyed being left behind by Tie Zhu and wanted to scold him a bit. However, seeing Tie Zhu's anxious expression made him hold back his words.
The entire street was empty, with the wind blowing and lifting a few fallen leaves and pieces of paper, mixed with swirling dust. Apart from these, there were no signs of life, and occasionally two echoes would drift over, making the silence terrifying.
Tie Zhu stood in the middle of the road, shouting for a long time without hearing a response. Feeling anxious, he slowly walked along the street. After walking for several dozen meters, he saw a person lying on the ground not far away.
"Shunliu Brother!" Tie Zhu slowly walked over. The person lying on the ground looked increasingly familiar to him, and tears began to flow uncontrollably down his face.
He took slow steps toward the figure, tears streaming down his face like rain.
"It can't be Shunliu Brother, it can't be! There are so many who fell today; it definitely won't be Shunliu Brother. He's so strong; he must be fine!"
"Yes, yes, it must be like that! It must be someone else, someone else, not Shunliu Brother, not Shunliu Brother; it's not Shunliu Brother!"
Tie Zhu walked very slowly, really slowly. In just a short distance of twenty or thirty meters, it took him over a minute to reach the body. His heart felt like it was plunged into an ice cave, tormented as he constantly told himself that the corpse ahead was not Shunliu Brother's; it must belong to another soldier. Shunliu Brother must be okay!
