Tie Zhu walked slowly forward, step by step. The closer he got, the more he felt like collapsing. He had become completely disoriented; he could almost be certain that the person lying on the ground was Shunliu Brother.
Liuzi emerged from the corner, holding a gun and moving cautiously.
Although Liuzi was someone who loved to take small advantages, he valued his life greatly. Therefore, he was always careful in everything he did. With remaining enemies in the town, Little Liuzi walked attentively, fearing that a Japanese Soldier might suddenly appear and shoot him.
Aside from Tie Zhu who was dazedly moving forward, there was only the sound of low sobbing. It was eerily quiet, a post-war silence that felt frightening!
In the distance, inside a Ruined Building, a Japanese Sniper remained motionless on the ground, his gun resting beside him as he closed his eyes.
A shout brought him out of his slumber.
Slowly opening his eyes, a pair of blood-red eyes appeared particularly terrifying. A faint smile lingered at the corners of his mouth, but it felt more like a demonic summons than genuine amusement. (During World War II, Japanese Snipers would not change positions after firing; they typically stayed in one spot for a long time and would not move even if discovered. This might be related to their training habits.)
The Japanese Sniper gradually picked up his gun and began observing the situation on the street.
"Two Chinese Soldiers, one poses no threat, while the other may be a threat!"
The Japanese Sniper calculated in his mind and slowly reached a conclusion: on the distant street, one Chinese Soldier, Tie Zhu, was disoriented and unable to confront or believe that Shunliu Brother had fallen, while the other was cautiously on guard.
"Then I'll take out that threatening Chinese Soldier first!"
The gun's muzzle slowly moved, and the crosshairs in the scope gradually settled on Liuzi as his finger began to squeeze the trigger.
"Bang!"
A low gunshot echoed from the end of the street.
The heartbroken Tie Zhu was startled awake by the sudden sound of gunfire!
He picked up the gun and frantically aimed around, spinning in place.
Behind him, Liuzi had already fallen into a pool of blood, lying on the ground convulsing.
Tie Zhu was startled awake by the sudden attack; his instincts honed on the battlefield forced him to immediately take cover behind a nearby barricade.
"Bang!"
Another muffled sound echoed as a bullet struck the spot where Tie Zhu had just been, kicking up a cloud of dust.
The enemy was at the end of the street!
Once again attacked, Tie Zhu confirmed the attacker's location was at the end of the street, but he did not know exactly where.
Slowly, Tie Zhu crawled backward from his hiding spot. He wanted to check on Liuzi's condition; he had seen him lying on the ground convulsing earlier—perhaps he wasn't dead, just injured!
After crawling just two steps, another bullet struck near Tie Zhu, this time almost grazing his body as it hit the ground.
Startled, Tie Zhu immediately retreated back behind the barricade, crouching in a corner with his head in his hands, feeling utterly helpless.
"What should I do? What should I do?"
Tie Zhu's mind was in chaos. At that moment, he had no idea how to face this situation. He thought of Shunliu Brother; if Shunliu Brother were here, this situation would be no challenge for him—he would definitely have a way out.
Thinking of Shunliu Brother made Tie Zhu's tears flow once again. He could almost confirm that the body not far away was indeed Shunliu Brother's!
"I must find a way to escape. No, not just escape; I need to take Shunliu Brother's body with me!"
Wang Shunliu silently made up his mind that he must not let Shunliu Brother's body be left in a foreign land. He had to bring Shunliu Brother back home, back to Dabie Mountain!
Tie Zhu peeked out cautiously to look at the corpse not far away, but as soon as he exposed his head, a bullet from a Japanese Soldier struck the cover, sending dust flying into Tie Zhu's face.
"This person must be the murderer who killed Shunliu Brother!"
Although it was just a glance, Tie Zhu confirmed the direction in which Shunliu Brother had fallen; he had collapsed forward, head down.
This indicated that Shunliu Brother had been ambushed from behind. If he had been shot by a Japanese Soldier from the front, he would have fallen backward.
The Commander had just mentioned that the three Japanese Soldiers they had eliminated were the only survivors from that group they encountered. This meant that the Japanese Soldier currently aiming at him was likely the one who killed Shunliu Brother!
"Revenge!"
The word "revenge" instantly filled Tie Zhu's mind. At this moment, all he could think about was killing that Japanese Soldier to avenge Shunliu Brother!
Tie Zhu was extremely agitated, his heart racing fast, and his eyes began to turn red. All that echoed in his mind were two words: revenge, revenge, avenge Shunliu Brother!
He tightened his grip on his weapon, preparing to charge out, but a glimmer of clarity and Shunliu Brother's words appeared in his mind.
"Tie Zhu, you must remember to stay calm no matter what the situation is, understand? You must stay calm and not let your emotions take over. Only a calm mind can help you survive longer on the battlefield. Remember this!"
"Calm down, calm down. You need to stay calm, Tie Zhu. You cannot let Shunliu Brother down!"
Tie Zhu slowly loosened his grip on his weapon and began to adjust his breathing, repeatedly reminding himself to stay calm.
The surrounding terrain was simple; Wang Shunliu was hiding behind a pillar with an open door beside him. However, two meters directly in front of him was an open area with no cover at all. Just slightly exposing himself could get him shot by a Japanese Soldier.
"The Japanese Soldier should be at the end of the street. I haven't heard any gunfire, so it shouldn't be a Type 38 rifle!"
The Japanese Soldier fired several shots, but Tie Zhu could only conclude this much; he truly couldn't identify what weapon the Japanese Soldier was using against him.
"Bang!"
A low gunshot echoed from afar once again. Tie Zhu felt a violent tremor from the pillar he was leaning against; the Japanese Soldier must have hit the pillar where he was hiding.
"This damn Japanese Soldier really has good marksmanship!"
Tie Zhu vividly remembered the few shots the Japanese Soldier had fired at him; it was fresh in his mind. He was certain that as soon as he dared to show his head again, this Japanese Soldier would send him to meet the deities.
"What should I do? What should I do? What should I do?"
Tie Zhu desperately patted his head, trying to come up with a good plan. If he remained pinned down in this spot, he wouldn't be able to avenge Shunliu Brother, let alone move at all.
"If I fire my weapon, my comrades nearby should hear the gunfire and come to support me, right?"
Tie Zhu glanced at the weapon in his hand and suddenly had an idea.
"No, no, that won't work. What if this Japanese Soldier sees too many people and runs away? How will I avenge Shunliu Brother then?"
Tie Zhu hit his helmet hard, hoping to think of a good solution.
