"Did I dream again?"
Tie Zhu looked at himself, confused, as he woke up unharmed. Hadn't he just rushed out? Why was he back?
"Could it be that I can't die? No, no, that's impossible. How could anyone not die? It must be a dream; I was just missing Shunliu Brother too much, so I dreamed that I died!"
Tie Zhu leaned against the wall, his mind in chaos. At the moment he rushed out in his dream, he realized that if he wanted revenge, he couldn't act impulsively; otherwise, he might not only fail to avenge himself but also get killed by the Japanese!
"No, that's not right either; it wasn't a dream. I've had dreams before in the tavern, and the things I dreamed about came true. What did I dream about just now? It seems I dreamed that I was crying, reminiscing about the times spent drinking with Shunliu Brother. Then, there were gunshots outside; a soldier was shot dead by a Japanese soldier—no, it was two shots. Then I rushed out and got shot by a Japanese soldier!"
Tie Zhu finally sorted through the events in his mind, but his brow furrowed again. Now he was hiding inside the building, with the entrance targeted by a Japanese soldier's gun. He wasn't sure if it was one person or two; it seemed like he heard two gunshots in his dream, but maybe it was just one.
Frustrated, Tie Zhu held his head in his hands, unsure of what to do. "I really feel useless. If Shunliu Brother were here, he would definitely know how to escape. All I can do is cry; I'm really of no use at all!"
With his head down in despair, tears slowly slid down Tie Zhu's face once more.
"I can't cry; I mustn't cry! Crying will attract an innocent soldier; I can't harm anyone anymore!"
Tie Zhu muttered to himself, gradually stopping his sobs. His mood began to calm down. Although he felt deeply saddened, he slowly regained his rationality and started to consider how to escape this small building and how to avenge Shunliu Brother.
After thinking for a while without coming up with a good plan, Tie Zhu began to feel anxious again, unsure of what to do.
"What should I do? What should I do? What should I do! What on earth should I do?"
Tie Zhu paced back and forth in the room for several minutes but still had no good ideas.
"Forget it; I won't think anymore. I'll just rush out!"
Tie Zhu grabbed his rifle and wanted to charge out but hesitated at the door: "No way; rushing out like this is no different from seeking death. If I die, how can I avenge Shunliu Brother?"
Tie Zhu felt uncertain in his heart and, unwilling to just stand at the door, retreated back inside. "If I rush out, I'll get shot. No, absolutely not. I need to think of a way!"
After pacing around the room a few more times, Tie Zhu held the gun and contemplated for a while. Finally, he gritted his teeth, stood at the door, thought it over again, and decided he had to rush out. He couldn't just hide here and watch Shunliu Brother's body lying outside; it was something Tie Zhu simply couldn't do.
"Charge!"
With determination, Tie Zhu ultimately decided to rush out. Standing at the door, he fixed his gaze on the distant entrance, and memories of everything he learned at the Recruit Training Camp began to flood his mind as he started to think about how he could find a glimmer of hope.
"One!"
"Two!"
"Three!"
Counting down in his heart, Tie Zhu launched himself out of the house like an arrow released from a bow.
In the Ruined Building, the Japanese Sniper lay quietly on the ground, aiming his Sniper Rifle at the entrance of the Small Building where Tie Zhu was hiding, just waiting for his prey to take the bait.
A blue figure rushed out from the house.
"Finally got a bite, little fish!"
The Japanese Sniper whispered as he unhesitatingly pulled the trigger.
"Bang!"
A dull gunshot rang out as a bullet struck the ground behind Tie Zhu, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Tie Zhu did not notice any movement behind him. Upon hearing the gunshot, he immediately leaped across the road and rolled under the eaves of a building.
When no further shots rang out, Tie Zhu's mind began to stabilize. It seemed this place was a blind spot for the Japanese Soldier, and there should only be one of them, as he had only heard a single gunshot.
Tie Zhu stood up, brushed off his pants, and moved forward.
After walking about ten meters, he suddenly froze in place as if struck by lightning.
He would never forget what Shunliu Brother's gun looked like. The handle was wrapped with a piece of burlap, inside which was a bit of tobacco.
Wang Shunliu had told Tie Zhu that the smell of tobacco helped him maintain high accuracy when shooting. He wrapped some tobacco around the handle so he could smell it during battles and use it to store tobacco otherwise.
The last shred of hope in Tie Zhu's heart was shattered. He knew that Shunliu Brother never let go of his gun even while sleeping, let alone on the battlefield. For a soldier, the gun was their second life; as long as they were alive, they could not lose their weapon!
“Shunliu Brother!”
Standing in the street, Tie Zhu shouted loudly at the bodies lying by the roadside, tears streaming down his face as he collapsed to the ground.
Though he had been sad moments ago, there had still been a glimmer of hope in his heart that it was just someone who looked like Shunliu Brother. Now that he saw Shunliu Brother's gun and his second "gun"—a Big Smoking Gun—that hope vanished.
“Shunliu Brother, wait for me! I’m going to avenge you right now!”
At that moment, hatred burned in Tie Zhu's eyes. He tightly gripped his gun, his face contorting into a fierce expression.
“Kill him! Kill him! I must kill him!”
At this point, rage consumed Tie Zhu, leaving no room for rational thought.
"Kill him, kill him! You must kill him!"
With a beast-like growl, he rushed out from the corner of the corridor, running to the body of Wang Shunliu: "Come out, come out, you damned Little Devils, hiding in the dark and shooting from a distance. What kind of hero are you! Come out, come out, show yourself!"
Tie Zhu finished speaking and fired his weapon wildly at a distance. The bullet hit the wall of the Ruined Building's second floor, causing a slight thud and some dust to fall, but there was no further movement.
The Japanese Sniper remained unfazed, slowly aiming the gun at Tie Zhu's head.
"Another fool, looking for death!"
He gradually squeezed the trigger, and in the scope, the bullet struck Tie Zhu right between the eyes.
"Damn you Little Devils, get out here...!"
Before Tie Zhu could finish his sentence, he heard a dull gunshot in his ear, followed by a sharp pain in his head, and then everything went black.
"It hurts! It really hurts, a pain that pierces to the heart!"
Tie Zhu felt a soul-tearing pain wash over him as he slowly fell.
In his final moments, Tie Zhu turned his head slowly, and the last scene before his eyes was that of Shunliu Brother lying beside him.
"Shunliu Brother, Tie Zhu is here to accompany you!"
